Fishermen

Rough waters and capsizing ships elevate the rate of fatal work injuries among fisherman. There were 121 fishermen per 100,000 full-time equivalent workers who had a job-related fatal injury last year, making it the No. 1 deadliest job among occupations with at least 15 fatal work injuries, according to preliminary data released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Loggers

Logging, forestry worker Loggers also have a high-risk job, with 102 fatal work injuries per 100,000 full-time equivalent workers, according to BLS. “The big things are falling trees…folks being struck,” Pegula said. Among all fatal occupational injuries, about 15% are from being struck by an object or equipment, or other contact.

Aircraft pilots and flight engineers

Low-flying crop duster spraying fertilizer There were 57 fatal work injuries per 100,000 full-time equivalent aircraft pilots and flight engineers last year, according to BLS. With small planes, crop dusters, commuting flights, and flights to remote places there are a fair number of plane crashes, and many don’t make the news. Refuse and recyclable material collectors

Sanitation workers Collecting garbage and recycling materials is another top dangerous occupation, with 41 fatal work injuries per 100,000 full-time equivalent workers. For this group, transportation injuries are substantial. “Just being physically in a vehicle puts them at risk. They could be riding on the back, susceptible to falling off,”

I disagree. The two most dangerous jobs in the world are being a convenience store clerk and a New York City cab driver.

Wow, we better give all the cops and firemen raises right away!

“Why?” What kind of a question is that? Why do you hate cops and firemen?

They need raises because they’re number one and two on the dangerous jobs lis— oh. They’re not?

They’re not even on the list?

Never mind, give them all raises anyway!

No. The last three were roofers, structural iron and steel workers, and farmers and ranchers (e.g. getting tangled in tractors). (But, hay balers are pretty safe, apparently: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iqtb1uKWB40 - NSFW, but coffee-coming-out-of-your-nose-funny anyway.)

I doubt being a cop is even in the top 20, contrary to the impression they’d like to leave.

Cops aren’t on the top 7 (tenth), nor are firemen. Firemen tend to die after they are no longer able to do their jobs via too much smoke inhalation. I was surprised at the list too, as I thought that convenience store clerks and taxi drivers have jobs more immediately dangerous than cops.

Fishing, logging, aircraft pilot/flight engineer, farmer/rancher, miner, roofer, garbage/recyclable collector, truck driver, stuntman, police.

Over a ten-year period (2002-2011), 1,559 U.S. cops died on the job (source http://www.nleomf.org/facts/officer-fatalities-data/causes.html). Of these, 570 were shot on the job. In two years (2008-2009), 284 U.S. cops committed suicide (source http://badgeoflife.com/currentmyths.php). So a cop is almost as likely to die of suicide as on the job.

A quick google search does seem to put cab drivers ahead of police in terms of death-rates (15.1 per hundred-thousand vs 9.3).

It’s heartening to observe an increasing appreciation for manual laborers; through reality shows and reports like this.

After hiring several contractors for a variety of house renovations and installations - it was clear that they all had a knowlege of sciences - electricity, chemistry, physics and common sense. Comparing their work ethics to cubicle colleagues in my own profession - they were far superior.

I know what will be the most dangerous job in America if Obama stays in office, and Obamacare gets into full tilt socialistic swing.

You know, if you're a logger and someone has to tell you that "the big things" are "trees" you probably won't be missed too much...
