LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — American singer Andy Williams is dead at the age of 84.

Williams’ publicist Paul Shefrin confirmed the singer died Tuesday night at his home in Branson, Missouri following a year-long battle with battler cancer.

Williams recorded 18 Gold and three Platinum-certified albums, with hits that include “Canadian Sunset,” “Butterfly,” “Can’t Get Used to Losing You,” and most famously “Moon River.”

Williams also hosted The Andy Williams Show, a variety show from 1962 to 1971. He was most famous for his Christmas specials.

He was born in Wall Lake, Iowa on Dec. 3, 1927.

Williams married dancer Claudine Longet in 1961 and the couple had three children. They divorced in 1975, but remained friends.

He remarried in 1991 and moved to Branson with wife Debbie Meyer. While in Branson, Williams opened the Moon River Theater and continued preforming into his 80s.

The singer also had a home in La Quinta.

I felt bad for him when his ex wife became a rampaging murderer in the 1970s.

Andy was also a life-long Republican. Many assumed he was a Democrat because of his career in the entertainment industry and friendship with RFK. Actually, he changed his registration to Democrat so he could attend the DNC in ‘68 as a delegate for RFK. After the Senator’s assassination, Williams switched his registration back to the GOP and remained a Republican until his passing.

Andy Williams was great. Nobody did the Christmas show like Andy (except maybe Perry Como).

Here is Andy at his best (with a couple of other guys):

To Mr. Williams’ credit, he stood by his ex-wife, even paying for her lawyer. I don't know too many people who would do all that for an ex-spouse. Most would let the ex rot in prison.

I just remember the tasteless SNL skit (written by Michael O'Donoghue, of course), for the "Claudine Longet Invitational Ski Tournament", where they would show skiers coming down then falling when shot by Claudine.

I’ve driven past the signs at Wall Lake, IA a thousand times laying claim to him. :-)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andy_Williams

Williams was born in Wall Lake, Iowa, the son of Jay Emerson and Florence (née Finley) Williams. He first performed in a children’s choir at the local Presbyterian church. Williams and his three older brothers Bob, Don, and Dick formed the Williams Brothers quartet in late 1938, and they performed on radio in the Midwest, first at WHO in Des Moines, Iowa, and later at WLS in Chicago and WLW in Cincinnati. Williams graduated from Western Hills High School in Cincinnati and his brother was engaged to Gene Ingram’s car-pool partner, Peggy. The Williams Brothers appeared with Bing Crosby on the hit record “Swinging on a Star” (1944). They appeared in four musical films: Janie (1944), Kansas City Kitty (1944), Something in the Wind (1947) and Ladies’ Man (1947). This led to a nightclub act with entertainer Kay Thompson from 1947 to 1951.

We’re both right. Born in IA and moved to Cincy at some point.
