Parents object to characterization of band show as 'communist' (New Oxford, Pennsylvania)

Parents met with New Oxford High School Marching Band officials Tuesday night at the high school auditorium in the wake of a controversy over the theme of the band's field show.

The meeting was private and the press was not allowed to attend.

The marching band's show, originally called "St. Petersburg: 1917," made national news when a parent who saw the band's show at a game in Waynesboro a few weeks ago contacted Fox News Radio, offended by the performance he said "celebrates" the Russian revolution. He objected to the use of props that included hammers and sickles, used for years as the symbol of the communist Soviet Union.

(snip)

But because of the recent media attention, the band show's name is being changed and the hammers and sickles used in the performance will be removed, Harbaugh said. The show's introduction will also be changed, she said.

The show still will feature music by Shostakovich, including excerpts from Symphony No. 12 in D minor, Symphony No. 10 in E minor, and ballet suite No. 4. The band's music was purchased from a company that specializes in marching band shows, Harbaugh said.

"Our band director and kids work very, very hard. We apologize for any offense caused," Harbaugh said. "We understand why people were, but it was never our intent."

The stupidity —it boggles the mind.

Two words: private school. Preferably in your home.

Perhaps they were just preparing to participate in the Inauguration parade, should Obama win.

Wait a minute, it was a meeting at a public location with public officials and the meeting was private? Someone needs to generate a FOIA and demand to know under what law the meeting could be held in private.

Personally, I'm looking forward to their next show: Berlin: 1934. Lots of Wagner and a rousing rendition of the Horst-Wessel-Lied, plenty of red and black. Maybe they can do that rotating swastika routine like in Springtime for Hitler.

Most Americans and perhaps nearly all young Americans have next to nothing of a history education.

It doesn't matter what was meant or taught by a teacher ... what people see is communism.

If a straight man puts on a dress and make-up, do you immediately say, "Just a spoof .. he's straight" ?

Yeah, and the Bolshevik parents who are so proud of their accomplishments, want to remain anonymous.

Here’s a site with reviews of that school (you can be an “other” to comment and all it takes is an email address):
http://www.greatschools.org/school/parentReviews.page?id=615&state=PA

A few people already left just one red star for the Bolshevik breeding ground.

I don’t think it is actually stupidity.
I think it represents the mindset of our “educators.” Remember, the teacher’s unions and many teachers SUPPORT Obama and his policies.

and to think, they could have lined up and executed the Principal and his family as part of the halftime show

This school is a 10 minute drive from the Gettysburg battlefield.

So I can see why they were forced to look to Soviet Russia for interesting historical themes.

When I was in Moscow my girlfriend asked that I put away the communist pins and emblems I bought to bring back to friends who asked me to get some for them. I wasn't even thinking about how deep the hurt could go. Buried them deep in my luggage after that.

Anyone know if in the performance they shoot Anistasia separately or with the rest of her family.

Even if it was a history piece on the Russian revolution (that, ahem, let to Communist rule and the slaughter of 10’s of millions of people) and the “hammer and sickle” are a part of that history, it’s just not very smart. Imagine the outrage if someone did a “history of 1930’s Germany” and included Swastikas and train cars...

My personal dealings with school officials have taught me that not only are they stupid, but they are very hard-nosed and stubborn, and tend to dig-in whenever you’ve caught them red handed.

Only one thing is effective in my experience: public humiliation. Using the internet, radio talk shows, social media or whatever you have to do.
