Florida criminal defense attorney Mark OMara, counsel for George Zimmerman, will discuss Protecting the Right to Protect during a Saturday morning session at the 27th annual Gun Rights Policy Conference this weekend in Orlando, Fla.
His presentation immediately follows a two-man panel report on Stand Your Ground laws by attorneys Eric Friday, counsel for Florida Carry, and Jon Gutmacher, author of Florida Firearms Law, Use & Ownership.
The announcement came from Alan Gottlieb, founder and executive vice president of the Bellevue-based Second Amendment Foundation and chairman of its sister organization, the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms. He will host the big conference, which will also feature author John Lott, American Spectator Senior Editor John Fund and several other speakers.
Gottlieb has been scrambling this week to wrap up some of the conference details. He also confirmed that Former Navy SEAL Benjamin Smith, now a regular contributor to Fox News and Breitbart, will speak during a Sunday morning panel discussion on Homeland Security and Gun Rights.
Stand Your Ground (SYG) lies at the heart of the Zimmerman case. He is accused of second-degree murder in the shooting death earlier this year of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin. The case created a national furor over self-defense and the SYG laws. Zimmerman shot Martin in a physical confrontation that left the 28-year-old neighborhood watch captain with lacerations on the back of his head, and blood dripping from his nose.
It was only after widespread protests that a special prosecutor was appointed to investigate the Martin/Zimmerman case and the charge was filed. OMaras presentation is expected to get plenty of media attention.
While the OMara appearance may be Saturday mornings headline event, Sunday mornings session with former SEAL Smith should be riveting.
