Organs taken from patients that doctors were pressured to declare brain dead: suit

The New York Organ Donor Network pressured hospital staffers to declare patients brain dead so their body parts could be harvested — and even hired “coaches” to train staffers how to be more persuasive, a bombshell lawsuit charged yesterday.

The federally funded nonprofit used a “quota” system, and leaned heavily on the next of kin to sign consent forms when patients were not registered as organ donors, the suit charged.

“They’re playing God,” said plaintiff Patrick McMahon, 50, an Air Force combat veteran and nurse practitioner who claims he was fired as a transplant coordinator after just four months for protesting the practice.

The suit, filed in Manhattan Supreme Court, cited four examples of improper organ harvesting.

In September 2011, a 19-year-old man injured in a car wreck was admitted to Nassau University Medical Center. He was still trying to breathe and showed signs of brain activity, the suit charged.

But doctors declared him brain dead under pressure from donor-network officials, including Director Michael Goldstein, who allegedly said during a conference call: “This kid is dead, you got that?” the suit charged.

The patient’s family consented to have the organs harvested.

“I have been in Desert Storm, Iraq and Afghanistan in combat. I worked on massive brain injuries, trauma, gunshot wounds, IEDs. I have seen worse cases than this and the victims recover,” McMahon told The Post.

That same month, a woman was admitted to St. Barnabas Hospital in The Bronx still showing signs of life, the suit said.

---snip---

In November 2011, a woman admitted to Staten Island University Hospital after a drug overdose was declared brain dead and her organs were about to be harvested when McMahon noticed that she was being given “a paralyzing anesthetic” because her body was still jerking.

If this is happening here, it makes one wonder about other programs...

I suggest reading the other examples in the article, it seems like a real life "coma" (for those in rio linda there is a book called "coma" about organ harvesting via murder)

This is a strong reason to have an advance directive that says "keep me alive" to discourage this "not alive enough organ harvesting". This is going to damage the donation programs. They will have another "reform" dog a pony show and it will be business as usual. Until Obamacare, then both patients will be required to die.

This is the exact kind of antics that motivated me to remove myself as a listed Organ Donor when I renewed my Driver’s License.

I don’t need some surgeon with a God Complex putting my life in his hands.

I wonder how much profit there is in rehab vs a transplant.

In rehab you have one patient and can only bill for the one.

In transplants you can parse out the liver, two kidnies, cornias, perhaps a heart, sometimes the lungs, bone marrow, ligaments etc. So you have multiple patients and multiple profit points.

PLUS you have mega donors giving to transplant centers (PLUS TAXPAYERS in some cases)

CHA ching$$$$$$$$

A “ keep me alive” advance directive is a good idea, but it’s not enough. They’ll just declare you dead, like the examples listed in this article.

...plus, rehab from brain injury occurs at other locations, so once the patient is stable enough to transfer, the hospital gets nothing more.

The only case where I could even begin to think of consenting to allow use of my or loved ones’ organs is if the Hospital would affirm, in a binding legal document, that the organs would not go to a Democrat or non citizen.

you include I refuse to be an organ donor language.

Interestingly adult stem cells (not to be confused with fetal) are looking to be a reliable treatment AND cure for some of these transplant issues.

I have given my family and lawyer explicit orders, I go into the cold earth with everything I have intact. No ghoul is stripping me to the bones on a whim or orders from some blood thirsty bean counter.

You want what I’ve got, then change the rules and let me sell them at a fair market price while I’m still around to enjoy the proceeds.

The organ transplant industry has nothing to do with patient well-being. The only thing it is about is money.

Organ recipients are paupers for the rest of their lives. The immune-suppressant drugs alone cost a fortune every month.

I have never signed and never will sign the organ donation box on my drivers license. Ubama has made us all slaves to the health care system while we are alive. I will be damned if I will allow them to sell my parts for profit after I'm dead.

It’s painful to recollect but upon the death of my father in 2008, my mother was set upon by high pressure ghouls via telephone, they would not stop. She consented just to get them to leave us alone. I do not like this, something is very wrong.

No, I’m afraid it’s not a good idea to agree to be an organ donor. You don’t always know what hospital you’ll end up in, or who your doctor will be.

My mother was in a Catholic nursing home for many years, with senile dementia. The nursing home took good care of her, and the nurses were great. But every once in a while she’d have to go to a nearby hospital, with a touch of pneumonia or the like. And every time that happened, I’d have to argue with the doctors there not to just kill her to save on expenses. I refused consent, and some of them spent a lot of time trying to persuade me to sign the consent forms.

Which raises another point. If you ever go into a hospital, you need a trusted family member to guard your back.

I don’t think it is the money, or at least not directly. I think it is utilitarianism.

The doctors are thinking, if this patient survives he will be severely brain-damaged (the worst fate imaginable to doctors, who have enormous pride in their intelligence, and tend to be control freaks.) OTOH, if this patient dies he can provide a better quality of life to half a dozen mentally competent people.

Sure the surgeries and the anti-rejection drugs will be really expensive but at least it is not futile, pointless spending in caring for a patient who is vegetative or severely brain-damaged.

And it’s really better for the family anyway - let it be a clean quick death with the consolation of having done something good in saving others, rather than a long, lingering, living death for someone who will never recover a meaningful life.

So do they justify themselves.

In China they harvest organs from live prison inmates, the popular preference is Falun Gong prisoners but any will do.

People in China also make aborted baby soup as a aphrodisiac.

These are human evils that are resultant of man-centered morality. Without God, we only answer to man. This is what is reflected in New York and Washington and Massachusetts and China and any “secularist” society/culture.

We have raised generations of children to believe life is disposable and that its importance/sanctity/dignity should give way to convenience, need, want, cost, difficulty, etc, all depending on someone else’s desires.

Obamacare will be just like the people who rammed it through and into law despite the wishes of Americans - an atheistic socialist culture of death.

This is why I am not an organ donor. I KNOW the stuff that goes on. When there are people involved, there are mistakes. An organ donor statement or DNR is like getting a power of attorney, in a way. You’ve given away your right to make that decision at the time it may matter.

I have kids, they know my wishes.

This is the exact kind of atheistic secularist beliefs that have enabled us to end up where human life is considered to have no real value. You sit here and pretend to know something of value about someone else's life - you know nothing. You are simply some other fool pretending. Yet, in that little world of yours, the extremely small world...the one behind the tip of your nose, you've deluded yourself into believing that you have it all figured out. God is the only one who has any right at all to decide how long someone is to live on this earth.

When I renewed by driver’s license earlier this year, I declined to designate myself as an organ donor for the first time in many years. I no longer have confidence in the hierarchy that controls such medical decisions, and particularly not since government involvement in medical decisions is constantly increasing.

I read a novel a few years back where the villains were bringing in illegals from Europe by ship that had operating rooms. Just before they made port they would harvest while still outside the 3 mile limit. Surgeons would helicopter out and return with the harvest. Can't remember the name of the book.

Wait til government takes over.....no more lawsuits allowed...just death panel bureaucrats.

Scary stuff.
Btw..don’t ever sign a DNR order either. They will not lift a finger to do even the basic life saving measures if they have a dnr. Many hospitals already have designated ghouls roaming around pressuring old people andthe very sick to sign them. They did that to my mom a few years ago when she was in the hospital and some thought she was not going to make it(she lived another 3 years). I told them no and went to lunch..came back and they were back in the room pressuring her to sign!! I hit the fan to say the least. Just tell your family members your wishes in these kind of events. Don’t sign anything at the hospital and no living wills. Hubby and I each know one another’s wishes but should probably write it down, get a notary and just keep it on file at home. Putting it on the to do list right now....lol.

The best way around this is for some organization to come up with a means to identify individuals as having “internal organs not satisfactory for transplant.” Think of it as an “anti-donor card”.

Importantly, instead of saying *why* their organs are not suitable, they should provide a phone number, so that when some hospital calls, this organization can immediate notify their family that this hospital is hoping to harvest their family members’ organs, so they had better get there ASAP.

Eventually, they can come up with some bogus diagnosis for a disease very hard to detect, always lethal, only communicable through organ transplant, etc.

A possible example is early stage Creutzfeldt–Jakob (mad cow) disease. This would throw a major monkey wrench into their efforts to harvest their organs. But if the person survived, the organization could later say that the person got the card by accident, and never had the disease.

But there are probably better diseases to cite, tailor made to making organ transplant worthless, yet involving minimal other concern.

This is just another arm of Obama’s “wealth redistribution.”Just think, your organs can be transplanted into one of Obama’s bums so he/she can continue to game the welfare system. Sorta a “new lease on life and a license to continue to steal from the productive members of our society.”
