Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday promised a tough response at the United Nations to the latest verbal attacks on Israeli by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and said he was determined to stop Iran developing nuclear weapons.
Before boarding a flight to New York to address the annual U.N. General Assembly, Netanyahu issued an open letter to Israelis marking the end of Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, the most sacred holiday in the Jewish calendar.
"On the question of Iran, we are all united in the goal of preventing Iran from achieving nuclear weaponry. On the day on which we pray to be inscribed in the Book of Life, a stage was given to the tyrannical regime of Iran which seeks at every opportunity to sentence us to death," Netanyahu said.
"On Yom Kippur eve, sacred to the Jewish people, the Iranian tyrant chose to call publicly before all of the world for us to vanish. This is a black day for those who chose to remain in the auditorium and hear these hateful words."
"In statements I will make before representatives of the nations at the U.N. General Assembly, they will hear our response. As prime minister of Israel, the state of the Jewish people, I am working in every way in order that Iran does not have nuclear weaponry," Netanyahu said.
"History proves that those who wanted to wipe us off the map failed in that objective, while the Jewish people overcame all obstacles."
Ahmadinejad's speeches in the U.N. forum included a prediction that Israel would be "eliminated".

And a very welcomed address after the trash talk of 0bama yesterday.
It all seems a bit surreal. The leader of Iran is in the process of acquiring nuclear weapons (or already has a few) and calls for the elimination of Israel. The Prime Minister of Israel seems very concerned yet the Israeli population does not appear to be engaged or even much concerned.
I’m looking forward to hearing a real leader speak.
Of course the US walked out, right? /s
The Israelis are very much concerned and most of them want Iran stopped.
However in recent months the media has put out a stream of false polls and false news stories showing Israelis opposed to war. It’s a full court press to try to stop Israel rather than Iran at any cost.
I wish Netanyahu the very best, but he better not give Obama so much as an inch....not one inch.
Not sure the Israeli people want to go to war or support a new war. Unsure - but everything I read points to more opposition.
One wonders how long it will be until war breaks out. It seems imminent.
Not sure how much support Netanyahu has? It has to be more than just him that says “go” - appears he is having a hard time mustering the support for war.
I figured the war would start within weeks. I can’t imagine Israel waiting much longer.
Watch what Obama does and not what he says. We have a large force in the water there. He is preparing for war.
I hope Netanyahu flips off Iran and Obama and calls Obama out as a spineless faker Nobel Peace Prize winner that he is.
I would love to see Israel attack Iran, while BiBi is speaking at the U.N.
Yes they did! Preach it, Bibi. God is on your side!
Love FReepers. I read with great interest the news story and yet I am asking when is he addressing UN? Read story again...no answer. Read Dave next and immediately get the answer. Love it. I can’t wait to hear him speak. Praying daily for Godly wisdom and protection for BiBi and all of Israel and miracles again if war is begun. Pray for the peace of Jerusalem.
I taped O and A - neither said anything new or interesting. I am hoping tomorrow’s speech will be of GREAT interest ;)
This is a black day for those who chose to remain in the auditorium and hear these hateful words.”
Hey Obama, he’s talking to YOU!
May peace be upon all Israel. Amen.
I just hope it waits until after the election.
