Snacks: The USDA's Solution To Student's Healthy Lunch Complaints
ABC News ^ | Sept. 26, 2012 | AMY BINGHAM

According to Department of Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, the solution to the growing grumbling over re-vamped school lunch menus boils down to a good old fashioned snack.

--snip--

Under the new regulations, cafeterias are required to serve twice as many fruits and vegetables while limiting proteins and carbohydrates. For an average high school student, that means two baked fish nuggets, a cup of vegetables, half a cup of mashed potatoes, one whole grain roll and 8 ounces of fat free milk is the fuel that served to get them through their...

--snip--

For Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa, that "scant diet" is a "rude awakening" for schoolchildren across the country. King and Rep. Tim Huelskamp, R-Kansas, introduced the "No Kids Hungry Act" this month to repeal the new lunch menu standards and prohibit the calorie limits.

"Kids are of varying sizes, activity levels and metabolism rates," King wrote in a Des Moines Register op-ed. "How can we expect each child to flourish and grow on subsistence diets? This all because some are overweight."

But it is not just a few overweight kids that are causing calorie cuts across the cafeteria. One out of every four adolescents are too overweight to join the military, according to a report released Tuesday by Mission: Readiness, a group of retired military leaders who claim obesity is now a national security issue.

"Removing the junk food from our schools should be part of comprehensive action that involves parents, schools and communities in helping children make healthy food choices," retired U.S. Coast Guard Admiral James Loy said in a statement. "The bottom line is that the armed services must have a sufficient pool of fit young adults to draw from in order to field enough recruits with the excellent qualifications needed to staff a 21st century military."

Am I the only one who finds this disturbing?

No you are not, I too find it very disturbing. It’s like another sign that the “elites” are planning on going back to the draft.

And I can see that happening with all of the social experiments being made in the military like the repeal of DADT.

The government should not be involved in deciding what children eat for lunch.

As another poster on another thread put it, if kids are obese, school lunch probably plays the smallest role of everything involved.

“”draw from in order to field enough recruits with the excellent qualifications needed to staff a 21st century military.””

That officer didn’t get the memo - obozo doesn’t want a military in the 21st century!

My thought is that school lunches are not where the problem is. school lunches should provide children with roughly 1/3 the calories they need to get through the day. Hungry children are not going to learn well, even if they are overweight. The thing is, when we did not have this obesity problem, we still served lunches that offered a lot of calories and “junk food.” This has not changed and this has not caused the problem. The problem lies with parents not being educated, perhaps, and this is where Michelle Obama could do some good. I also think more exercise would be a good idea as well. Let's bring back good old fashioned PE five times a week, not to mention recess twice a day where the children go outside and play (except in really bad weather when they play in the gym.)

“More one size fits all policies.”

I went through a long phase of approx age 12 thru 16 when I ate like a pig, it seemed as if I could not get enough and was always skinny, still am but I eat more rationally now. Every body metabolizes food differently. You’re right, there is no “one size fits all” some kids just need more than others to keep those pangs away.

Our fat ass first “lady” is nuts in addition to being fat assed..

this makes me sick, When I was in school 1966-1977 all our meals were homemade from scratch, And they were wonderful. Fried chicken, Pot pies, meatloaf, hamburger pie, steak, mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans, vegetable soup, grilled cheese sandwich, hamburgers, fries, peanut butter cookies, cinnamon rolls, chocolate cake, no bake cookies, apple crisp, rolls etc. I still love that food and can still smell the food cooking and starving.

Here’s and idea:...BRING YOUR OWN FREAKIN’ LUNCH! Then you can have what ever you want with no one deciding for you.<<

and here's another....limit EBT cards to fruits and vegetables and you'll love the school lunch!

They've already thought of that. They are confiscating home made lunches and throwing them away... next, they'll be bringing charges against the parents for abuse if the lunch doesn't meet "standards."

Exactly matches Mooch’s proclamations

a disturbing lie....This is only a valid argument if the nation has a draft. Since we have a volunteer army those who volunteer will be the ones motivated to be in shape....this is more admin propaganda to exert control where they should not

...sign that the “elites” are planning on going back to the draft.

I wonder why they haven't thought of drafting all the kiddies when they're five years old?

That way they can feed them, house them in barracks, and run them through perpetual boot camp.

That ought to keep them fit enough to be cannon fodder.

I'm no fan of the nanny state, but when "[o]ne out of every four adolescents are too overweight to join the military," I'm not surprised the military is concerned.

Schools are government indoctrination camps. Here’s a teacher’s page from a top Chicago grammar school. He teaches social studies.

These kids are raised up by socialists in a leftist propaganda echo chamber. These kids go on to become our “elites”.

"...What I enjoyed most about my work was the knowledge that I was impacting people's lives in a positive way. After a brief foray into the for-profit sector and the world of start-ups, I realized that I missed that feeling of doing good and decided to pursue a career in education. As a teacher, my goals are to empower students to see the world beyond the limitations of their own experiences, to develop the skills to give voice to their ideas and to develop the courage to try and positively change the world..."

You have this guy pegged spot on, 101ORD.

Granted, he is one of those who would bring a young child to an "Occupy Whatever" event, and his choices of "good" speeches tars him pretty accurately and lets you easily see what that "world beyond the limitations of their own experiences" he wants to paint for his students.

I am certain his foray into the "for-profit sector and the world of start-ups" was indeed very brief, and I have a feeling his exit from those sectors was a mutual agreement, but I suspect they people he dealt with in those sectors were thrilled to get rid of a pontificating no-load, and he was happy to get out of it while he still had any of his evil money left and into a unionized teaching job with lots of nice guaranteed benefits normal people never have a chance at.

I like to divide liberals up into three types: the normal ones who are decent and good-hearted, but don't understand the implications of the things they believe in; the ones who spout the party line with fevered eyes and spittle on their lips-they REALLY believe this stuff, but don't understand it; and lastly, the ones who really UNDERSTAND what liberalism is really all about, power, and the control of others in order to achieve an impossible utopia. If you have ever read 1984, these people may be likened to O'Brien, and in today's world, those people would be William Ayers, Francis Fox-Piven, Obama.

I know many people in the first third, and engage with them occasionally. The second third are exceedingly unpleasant, and I have met them at various demonstrations and counter-demonstrations. The last third I avoid.

This loser is the middle third. He doesn't know that the last third, the ones who really understand liberalism, view him in much the same manner as the last third views us, but with even more contempt.

To them, this Chicago teacher guy is a tool. Someone for whom the term "useful idiot" was originally created. In a way, it is sad, because if that last third gets their way, this dope is going to be one of the people who disappears in the middle of the night, pleading in puzzled tone as they take him away "Why are you doing this? I agree with you! I believe in what you believe in! Why am I being treated this way?

He will never understand that they view him as a tool, and tools have a duality in their nature...they can be used either to build something up or tear something down. A tool used to build something can also be used, with the appropriate guidance, preparation and application, to tear that very same thing down.

They know this. And it is why you see the Soviet Union, China, Khmer Rouge, etc. liquidate the intellectuals, doctors, teachers, writers, leaders. They only want them as tools to gain an end, and once they gain that end, they know how dangerous they can be to their own cause.

Breakfast - big, carb-loaded and with enough protein to grow...that's the way I handle the kids.

My grandson's typical breakfast is pasta chased with a bottle of Boost, has been for years. He's eleven, 5'5" and 128 pounds, football, b-ball and LAX. He's an A student and popular. My wife makes his lunch every day and it's never big but always good. I throw in a power bar.

We don't rely on the school to feed him.
