Off topic, somewhat, but reflective of how Libya was 50 years ago. There’s been little change there or through the Muslim world from then until now in much of the Mid-East and North Africa, IMO. Their doctrines/actions are still following the paths of hundreds of years ago, instead of moving into the 21st century.
Served on a carrier. In 1961, during a Med cruise, we stopped offshore of Tripoli and there were two days for shore leave. ....Everyone was strictly warned to not take cameras or to look at womens’ eyes, because the result might be death or injury.
I did not go ashore during that stop, but there were sailors brought back on stretchers with injuries. The folks that did go ashore told of open courtyards where both men and women would simultaneously squat over holes in the ground to relieve themselves. .....The baggy pants worn by the Libyans were referred to as “seven day shitters”, as they smelled so bad.
