NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- In a rare public apology, Apple CEO Tim Cook on Friday wrote an open letter to customers that acknowledged widespread complaints about the company's new Maps application.
"At Apple, we strive to make world-class products that deliver the best experience possible to our customers," Cook wrote. "With the launch of our new Maps last week, we fell short on this commitment. We are extremely sorry for the frustration this has caused our customers and we are doing everything we can to make Maps better." (Click here to view the full letter).
After using Google's (GOOG, Fortune 500) mapping data for five years, Apple (AAPL, Fortune 500) went in a new direction with the iOS 6 update to its mobile operating system, which rolled out to millions of iPhones, iPads and iPod Touch devices on Sept. 19. The new Apple Maps is also built into all iPhone 5s, which went on sale a week ago.

If I am forced to download Google maps, then why not stick with an Android.

I love Apple but apologizing is weak. I say fix the problem for IPhone 6 and be done. Everyone uses Garmin GPS products anyway for maps and driving.
How does this stuff get out of the door? Doesn’t anyone actually turn on the things and try to use them?? Or is Marketing so in control, they know it’s Cr@P and figure sell the things and we will deal with the blowback?
Updated my iPAd a few days ago and was horrified by the new maps. Use to be able to find anything almost automatically. Was truly amazing. Now everything is oriented the wrong way. Really awful.
I’ve never been an Apple fan... I equate them to a fashion designer and not an innovator of technology. (Right or wrongly)
I will never forgive them for not encouraging an open hardware platform for their PC, like IBM did with theirs back in the 80’s.... and I’ll tell you what I see the same kind of arrogance with cell phones.
Google wasn’t broken, but Apple decided to fix it anyway.
I’m not one to complain about billionaires fighting each other but in this case it’s appropriate.
Every thing Apple (tm) does is always the best. No matter what. Best design. Best engineering. Best programming. Best support... Coolest...Hip...All the hot girls will want... sigh! :( :( :(

Well, when you line up to buy the IPhone 27 in 8 months, maybe it will be working.
No other company in the world in held to such exacting standards of customer satisfaction, and rightly so, given their past performance.
Really, you can go ahead and upgrade to an iPhone with confidence:
First, you're not likely to even see a glitch in Maps if you use it, and
Two, Apple will likely have any minor glitches fixed by the next software upgrade... that's why they have the reputation they enjoy.

Apples core users (heh heh) do not need maps. They live on campus and walk or take public transportation to the coffee shop and clubs. Then live the rest of their lives like they are still in a public school.
It probably worked fine in Cupertino.
That’s not a flaw, that’s a built in feature!
... and expect everyone else to live like that, too. Many go into politics/policy.
Maybe some Chinese slave software engineer bollixed up on purpose. Slaves can revolt and slaves can sabotage
It’s not just the iPhone 5. This is iOS 6 pushing the change, not a device-specific issue.
If you have an Apple device and have recently upgraded to iOS 6, you’re affected.
