Truth In A Taxi

September 29, 2012

One day when I was in downtown Chicago, I hailed a taxi. Once inside, I noticed several advertisements for a New Age guru posted on the seat in front of me. The driver claimed that this mystic was the “divine one” for our day. He believed that God appointed various leaders throughout the ages, and that Jesus had merely been the appointee for His time.

Of course, I had to disagree. As we talked, I mentioned Jesus’ words: “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me” (John 14:6). Contrary to the cabbie’s belief, Jesus was not just one in a series of enlightened religious leaders—He is the only way to know God, and only through Him can we get to heaven.

As the “Son of the living God” (Matt. 16:16), Jesus didn’t simply declare Himself to be the ultimate spiritual authority. He proved it with His death and resurrection. Christ “offered one sacrifice for sins forever” (Heb. 10:12).

Jesus said of Himself: “I am in the Father and the Father in Me” (John 14:11). Therefore we don’t need to investigate any “new” path of salvation. It’s better to learn all we can about Christ; He is the only One who can provide spiritual certainty.

My heart is stirred whene’er I think of Jesus,
That blessed Name that sets the captive free;
The only Name through which I find salvation,
No name on earth has meant so much to me. —Eliason
Spiritual phonies will only take us for a ride, but Jesus will take us all the way to heaven.

Read: John 14:1-11

I am the way, the truth, and the life. —John 14:6

Amos 4-6

It’s time for Sergei Rachmaninov: The Journey to a First Symphony. He left the Moscow Conservatory in 1892 at age 19 to make his way in the world. He taught, composed and conducted, finding a way to make money in a tsarist Russia that was slowly falling apart at the seams.

During his life, Sergei wrote a lot of art songs, or lieder, as they are known in German, much like Schubert, Schumann, Brahms and Wolf. These are settings of poetry, where Sergei was responsible for the melody. In 1893, Sergei published a group of six songs as his Opus 4.

I actually managed to find some videos with translations! These videos offer both Russian and English lyrics when you expand the area beneath the video. This is a voyage of discovery for me, and I’m starting to appreciate Sergei’s gift for writing for voice.

These are videos of Dmitri Hvorostovsky in his early years, before his voice matured. The Russians are turning out some great singers!

”In the Silence of the Secret Night”, Op. 4/3

”Sing Not, O Lovely One”, Op. 4/4

Forty years after he wrote it, Sergei Rachmaninov said of this suite for two pianos, “Don’t judge this piece too severely. I was underage when I wrote it.” He was 20 years old at the time, and it was 1893.

The first movement is based on a poem by Mikhail Lermontov, titled “Gondola Song”.

O cool evening wave
Lop gently under the oars of the gondola
That song again and again the sound of the guitar!
In the distance, now melancholy, how happy,
Was heard the sound of the old barcarolle:
”The gondola glides through the water, and time flies through love;
The waters become smooth again and passion will rise no more.”

Rachmaninov: Suite #1 for Two Pianos, Op. 5, “Barcarolle”

The second movement is based on a poem by Lord Byron.

It is the hour when from the boughs
The nightingale’s high note is heard;
It is the hour when lover’s vows
Seem sweet in every whispered word;
And gentle winds, and waters near,
Make music to the lonely ear.

”Night...Love”

The third movement is based on a poem by Fyodr Tyutchev.

Human tears, O human tears!
You flow both early and late –
You flow unknown, you flow unseen
Inexhaustible, innumerable –
You flow like torrents of rain
In the depths of an autumn night.

”Tears”

The final movement is based on a poem by Alexei Khomyakov.

The mighty peal rang out over the earth,
And all the air, moaning, shuddered and groaned.
Melodious, silver thunderings
Told the news of the holy triumph.

These are the Kremlin’s bells tolling on a Russian Easter morning.

”Easter”

Good evening, Mac...*HUGS*...did you have a good day? Relaxing?

I took the afternoon off to take my Dad to the doctor for his regular 3 month checkup. This is the doc that prescribes the Lexapro. For 89 he’s doing pretty well. I have to get him on the treadmill more, and he can’t sleep so much. Now I can tell him, “The doctor said”. Hoping that this will work.

Amid his piano playing and conducting, the 20 year old Sergei Rachmaninov turned out his Two Salon Pieces for Piano and Violin as his Opus 6 in 1893.

The first sounds a bit like Mendelssohn or Kreisler but with a Russian flavor.

Romance, Op. 6/1

The second is sheer fun and a showpiece for the violin.

Hungarian Dance, Op. 6/2

In 1893, the 20 year old Sergei Rachmaninov wrote the first symphonic piece to which he was willing to give an opus number. It’s a 15 minute tone poem based on a poem by Lermontov that Chekhov turned into a short story.

In a roadside inn on Christmas Eve, two travelers meet during a raging snowstorm and warm themselves by the fire. One is an elderly man who is disappointed with his failures in life. The other is a young woman, only half his age, who responds with warmth and compassion. The next morning, she resumes her journey, while the old man watches her sleigh disappear from sight. As he stands there, the snow covers him, and to the girl on the sleigh, he appears not so much as a snow covered statue, but as a giant rock.

Rachmaninov: “The Rock”, Op. 7
