PITTSBURGH — Homer Bailey of the Cincinnati Reds threw the season’s seventh no-hitter, beating the Pittsburgh Pirates 1-0 on Friday night.

The seven no-hitters matches the modern record for most in a season, tying 1990 and 1991. There were eight no-hitters in 1884.

The last no-hitter for the Reds was a perfect game by Tom Browning on Sept. 16, 1988.

Bailey (13-10) walked one and struck out 10. The last out was a popup by Alex Presley and when it was caught Bailey was mobbed near the mound by teammates.

Damn. And I had tickets to go to this game. But the wife got sick and I sold them.

What a thrill. Nice young man too. Seems humble. Gave all the credit to the catcher and the rest of the team.

Seven no-hitters this year. What does this season think it is, Nolan Ryan?

LOL. FWIW, I believe that April and September have historically been the months with the most no-hitters in baseball history. Speculation is that batters are still rounding into form in April, and in September you have a lot of AAA-level players in the lineup due to the expanded rosters after September 1st.

The seventh this year and the Reds’ first since Tom Browning in 1988.

Congratulations to him.

doesn’t Homer seem like an improbable name for a guy who threw a no-hitter?

I heard he uses the name to honor a relative but his birth name is David.

I believe that April and September have historically been the months with the most no-hitters in baseball history.

One oddity: On two occasions, there have been back-to-back no-hitters thrown by each team in a series. On September 17, 1968, Gaylord Perry of the San Francisco Giants no-hit the St. Louis Cardinals, and the Cardinals' Ray Washburn no-hit the Giants the following day. On April 30, 1969, Jim Maloney of the Cincinnati Reds no-hit the Houston Astros, and the Astros' Don Wilson no-hit the Reds the following day.

That hasn't happened before or since.

Do you know what Reds’ pitcher came within an out of duplicating Johnny Vander Meer’s double-no-hit feat?

Who broke it up?

What was odd about it?

I know it was Ewell Blackwell but I do not know the oddity.

Here is audio of the 9th inning:

Blackwell pitched a 6-0 no-hitter against the Boston Braves at Crosley Field on June 18, 1947, then in his next start had a no-hit game going against the Dodgers at Cincinnati on June 22, until Brooklyn’s Eddie Stanky hit a broken-bat single through the pitcher’s legs with one out in the ninth inning. Jackie Robinson later had another single and Blackwell emerged with a 4-0, two-hit victory.

Vander Meer, still with the Reds, was in the dugout watching Blackwell.

‘’I was up on the top step,’’ Vander Meer would remember. ‘’I wanted to be the first one out there to congratulate him.’’

Who were the other 6 no-hitters thrown against?

Pittsburgh Pirates - Not only are they not going to make the playoffs, but it looks like they will finish below .500 for the 20th straight season. — ESPN.com
