Madison - The state Supreme Court on Thursday declined - for now - to take up lower court orders blocking Wisconsin's voter ID law, the latest sign the law likely will not be in place for the Nov. 6 presidential election.
In a pair of brief orders, the high court said if it were to take up a review of the law, it would hear arguments in both cases at the same time. But it noted that initial appeal briefs had not yet been filed in one of those cases, and so it is taking neither.
Two Dane County judges separately blocked the law this year for violating different provisions of the state constitution. Thursday's ruling was applauded by opponents of the voter ID law.
GOP Gov. Scott Walker and Republicans in the Legislature approved the voter ID law last year, just as their colleagues did elsewhere around the country, saying it would help ensure fair elections. Democrats largely opposed Wisconsin's law, arguing it was an effort to prevent minorities and low-income people from voting.
Lawsuits followed and two Dane County judges struck down the law. One found the Legislature did not have the power under the state constitution to impose a photo ID requirement on voters; the other found the photo ID requirement placed an unreasonable burden on the right to vote guaranteed in the state constitution.
GOP Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen promptly asked the Supreme Court to take the cases, but the court in April declined to do so. In August, he repeated the request, saying the justices should take the case because there are now final orders from both lower courts.

Wisconsin ping: Voter ID denied again
FReep Mail me if you want on, or off, this Wisconsin interest ping list.
do they have time to head to the Supremes?!
He should go on offense and express his outrage against the state Supreme Court for obviously interfering with both the law and the election, and this outrage will galvanize Republican voters and independents to vote against the Obama thug machine behind this.
Translation: properly played, this can sway independents and act as a get out the vote stick for registered, but disinterested, Republicans.
The Democrats of course will continue to try to win elections with the votes of illegal aliens, felons, multiple voters and dead people, but even they can't go too far over the edge. Any scrutiny such as a close election will bring disaster for them.
The lower court rulings constitute denial of self-government to millions of people.
It is such a shame that impeachment is just about a dead letter across our nation. A few judicial scalps per year would go a long way.
Do you know if the lower court judges are elected or appointed?
Vote recounts go the same way; as soon as the Outcome is in favor of the Democrat, the counting stops.
We even had Obamacare Passed, and so many Billions already spent, that the USSC was afraid to cause it to be un-wound, and we got screwed again.
Lynching, I predict, will be coming back into vogue in the not-too-distant future, so that We The People can extricate ourselves from this Legal-joke of Court Systems.
Amen...... that is the future.
The ridding of liberalism will involve the ridding of liberals.
Bet you’d need ID to get into their court to hear their arguments.
I think they were appointed originally and must be elllected to subsequent terms. Unfortunately few people pay much attention to judicial elections.
I think that both of these judges were Democrat appointments, but I don’t know for sure.
