BENGHAZI, Libya (AP) — Hundreds of Libyans converged Saturday on a main square in Benghazi and another in Tripoli in response to a call from the military to hand over their weapons, some driving in with armored personnel carriers, tanks, vehicles with mounted anti-aircraft guns and hundreds of rocket launchers.
The call by the Libyan chiefs of staff was promoted on a private TV station in August. But it may have gained traction in the wake of the attack against the U.S. consulate in Benghazi in which the American ambassador and three staffers were killed. The incident was followed by a popular uproar against armed militias which have increasingly challenged government authorities.
In response, the government has called on all militias to disband or join a command center coordinating between the army and the militias. The government had relied on many militias for security during the turmoil following last year's ouster and killing of longtime leader Moammar Gadhafi.
Army Col. Omran al-Warfali said the turnout has been impressive.
"Hundreds of citizens came since the early hours of this morning to handover their weapons from all segments of society, men and youth, women, and even children came to hand over bullets they found it in the streets," he said.
Previously, the government had estimated that over 200,000 people in Libya are armed. It has attempted a number of disarmament schemes, including offering people jobs in exchange for handing over their weapons, or offering to buy guns. Those offers have shown few results...

Hundreds? Even though thousands are armed. Kind of like bragging Chicago had a “gun buyback” program and got 100 rusty or near worthless guns then claiming the US is unarmed.

Unfortunately, sarg, it’s going to take a few hundred civilian deaths before the People fight back. Many will be cowed into thinking, “It can’t happen to me,” but as it becomes personal, then you’ll see the remaining armed citizenry fight back.
We can only pray we’re not gobbled up in the first few waves.

I’ve seen no indication that the fat pigs in the federal government are capable of inflicting casualties. The fatsos in the ATF are tipping the scales at 350-lbs plus. That’s not good in running for cover on a battlefield. The cowards in the FBI are too scared to go into Bengazie and collect evidence to determine what happened at the consulate in Libya. That’s a sign that the FBI slugs aren’t willing to risk their fat, useless asses in hostile territory. The Secret Service mercenaries are more interested in scoring hookers than protecting a president. To me, that’s an indicator that they’re not capable of doing their jobs.
I’ve never seen federal pigs who are more useless, more cowardly and more self-interested than this bunch in DC today. Inflect casualties? I doubt it. They’ll be taking casualties - a lot.

Someone in our gov. simply said “Give us back the weapons we loaned you to kill Kadaffi, the ones our “Ambassador” was trying to retrieve, and we don’t bomb you into the stone age”.

When Mao defeated Chiang Kai Shek the Chinese did it too. One would think that after an armed revolt finally defeating three thousand years of imperial rule they’d be more likely to cling to their weapons, but no.

Really? They turned them in for nothing? We are to believe this?”
It should read...’citizens were forced to turnover weapons in Lybia and were escorted by jihadists in armored tanks carrying rocket launchers so they could ensure no resistance during the takeover.
That’s the only thing I can figure. I confess, I’m scratching my head over this. And wondering what comes next. I’ve got a bad feeling about it.
