Why Obama Has Gone on Political Offensive Against Romney Over Iran
DailyBeast ^ | Sep 25 2012 | Peter Beinart

Posted on 09/29/2012 2:58:29 PM PDT by WilliamIII

The president’s resistance to drawing a red line on Iran and his attacks on Romney for being cavalier about military action are fueled by the GOP nominee’s foreign policy blunders—and the knowledge that most Americans oppose a war with Tehran.

In the past 10 days, something remarkable has happened: President Obama has gone on the political offensive on Iran. It started just over a week ago when Benjamin Netanyahu took a swipe at Hillary Clinton and tried to pressure Obama into setting a deadline for military action.

It’s also become clearer that Americans deeply oppose military action against Iran. According a recent Chicago Council survey of American foreign policy (PDF), a majority of Americans oppose military action against Iran even if it enjoys United Nations approval. And when asked about the far more likely scenario of a unilateral U.S. strike, 70 percent of Americans disapprove. Fifty-nine percent say the U.S. should stay out of a war between Israel and Iran. And the percentage of Americans who see Iran’s nuclear program as a “critical threat” has actually dropped four points since 2010, despite the enormous attention the media—and Congress—have devoted to the issue.

Lurking behind these findings is the legacy of Afghanistan and Iraq, wars that despite the Romney campaign’s efforts to pretend they never happened, have left a deep imprint on the public’s view of military force.

he doesn’t get it. not being serious about a conventional military strike today absolutely means we will have a nuclear one within five years.

. . . until the first suitcase nuke goes off. And that would mean it is too late.

Ah, so this is why you’re posting Daily Beast articles.

It’s an interesting article. He makes some good points. Laura Ingraham had Dan Senor on her show, and said even conservatives are saying they’re wary of more wars. If people think voting for Romney means another war, I’m afraid the Democrats win.

Beinart is trying to change the conversation from Libya to Iran. While Libya told us that something was going down days before the Benghazi attacks, Obama was out hustling campaign contributions. After the fact, Obama threw up smoke by blaming a porn video. Now that people who can read know Al Qaida was behind the Libya trouble, the Regime has some stooge in the press alleging that Romney wants war with Iran.

Going on the offensive against Romney is the only viable game plan the Current Regime in the White Hut can come up with. They have NO defensibe argument for what they are now doing, and can only claim that “things would be worse” with Mitt Romney at the helm.

It is hard to imagine HOW things could be terribly worse than the situation we are now in. Israel is being jammed up against an intractable deadline beyond which they shall have to fight for their very existence, whether or not they get any help from the US. And so far, while Current Occupant makes vague and uncertain promises, it looks more and more like Israel WILL be abandoned by the Current Regime.

And it looks like with every day passing, that conclusion becomes even more inescapable.

Almost as if, the Muslim Brotherhood had a hot-line right to the Oval Office.

alleging that Romney wants war with Iran.

“Alleging”? Romney may or may not want war with Iran, but most of his freeper supporters on this thread DO want war with Iran. Read the posts. And they seem to see that as a difference between our guy - Romney - and the Current Occupant, i.e., one will go to war, the other won’t.

Unfortunately, war with Iran is not a popular prospect with voters, so for Romney’s supporters to keep talking about it doesn’t help him. I’m a (reluctant) Romney supporter, and I wish the rest of us would stop telling America that we need to start a war in Iran - because that’s a loser at the polls. I’m afraid that every time a freeper says let’s bomb Iran, Obama gets another vote.

Exactly. Since Romney is not president he can't commit a foreign policy blunder. This is a red herring to distract from Libya and Obama’s utter failure as a leader.

Serbia was defeated by just an air war. According to John Keegan the capitulation of Serbia in the Kosovo War marked a real turning point in the history of warfare. It “proved that a war can be won by air power alone.

“I’m afraid that every time a freeper says let’s bomb Iran, Obama gets another vote.”

Not true. What the American people don’t want is a land war and the occupation that follows, if for no other reason than our experiences in Vietnam, Iraq, and the present situation in Afghanistan.

Our people were thrilled with the small scale special forces operations in Afghanistan 10 years ago where we enabled the Uzbeks to run off the Taliban. What is driving us nuts lately is having our guys our hanging around in Kabul, with no intention of accomplishing anything except getting shot, when we have already announced a withdrawal.

Our people have been watching the the same pattern is repeating itself time after time. In the 1970’s a Democrat controlled Congress defunded the War in Vietnam because they wanted that taxpayer money for social spending. Our South Vietnamese allies, who were at the time in control of every province in South Vietnam, had to withdraw into enclaves around cities. With the communists surrounding our allies from all sides, they lost heart and gave up. North Vietnamese General Giap admitted in later years that the North had been beaten, and they just couldn’t believe it when the South suddenly gave up.

Cut to Iraq six years ago when Gen Patraeus organized his “surge”. The Democrats reacted with their own counter-surge, stirred by Harry Reid’s announcement that “The War is lost”. Again, the left was drooling over all that money being thrown at the Dept of defense. But this time we were lucky, and the surge succeeded quickly in spite this repeat of the treachery of Democrat politicians.

Our problem now is that Iran has a much bigger population than Iraq, and has two or three times the land area. Obama has already defunded our Army in order to buy votes with free cell phones and permanent vacations for the freeloader class . The American people are tired, and will no longer support a land war in any case.

So, our best bet would be for our Navy in the Gulf to take a hint from Obama’s prodigious imagination and soften up the Iranian populace by jamming the internet and the airwaves with offensive video clips. Saudi Arabia is next on the Muslim Brotherhood’s hit list and probably wouldn’t mind Israeli airplanes overflying Saudi airspace on their way to Iran’s nuclear facilities, where they can finish the job from 10,000 feet.

This may be correct. For years, I have been screaming that the pro-Israel groups have become the useful idiots of Iran by pressing Israel’s security concerns vis-a-vis its nuclear program. The American people will not go to war for Israel.
Iran is a threat to America and that is why we should pre-empt their nuclear program. All other language is distracting and helps the isolationists and shills for Iran.

Our campaign against Serbia.

Yeah, which is why there were NATO troops in Kosovo for years afterwards.

BTW, we can even invade without occupying. There is no need to stay.

That's what they said about Iraq. Quick invasion, a couple of months basking in the glow of a grateful populace, and then home again after leaving everything in the hands of the newly-formed democratic government, who would also flood us with oil out of appreciation. Didn't quite work out that way.

KFOR isn't American and no Americans are in Serbia now. It's not Serb anymore. (For the record, I opposed handing Kosovo over to the Islamists)

We invaded Iraq to overthrow Saddam Hissein. A limited strik to take out Iran's nuclear program, ICBM facilities, naval missiles, and the Revolutionary guard is entirely different.

But it wasn't the air-strike only campaign you claimed.

We invaded Iraq to overthrow Saddam Hissein. A limited strik to take out Iran's nuclear program, ICBM facilities, naval missiles, and the Revolutionary guard is entirely different.

And what do you expect Iran do do once the initial airstrike is over? Roll over and give up?
