Despite illness, Rep. Jesse Jackson on track for reelection

CHICAGO — Battling mental illness and personal financial troubles, Rep. Jesse L. Jackson Jr. (D-Ill.) is a heavy favorite for reelection Nov. 6 despite a surreal campaign from which he has been absent for almost four months.

Jackson, 47, who disclosed this summer that he has bipolar depression and has undergone weeks of hospitalization, is convalescing in Washington and meeting occasionally with aides. He has been absent from the House of Representatives since June 8.

Whether he will campaign at all is in question. His reelection bid is being led by his wife, Sandi Jackson, who turned down interview requests.

Chicagoan Kevin Lampe, who is serving as a spokesman for the Jackson campaign, said Thursday that the lawmaker remained under medical care. "As soon as the doctors say he can get back to work, he'll get back to work, which includes campaigning," said Lampe, noting that voter registration efforts were underway and a get-out-the-vote push was planned.

DePaul University political scientist Wayne Steger said Jackson, whatever his woes, looked like a sure bet to carry the election, which is five weeks away. Steger points to the nominal opposition, the GOP's weak organization in Cook County and anticipation of a robust turnout by Democrats who aim to keep President Obama in the White House.

The new 2nd Congressional District, which stretches from Chicago's South Side and south suburbs into Will and Kankakee counties, is deep blue. More than 80% of the voters there cast ballots for Obama in 2008.....

You could paint a turd black and throw it on the sidewalk and they would vote for it.

Racism? It isn’t possible is it. After all, the civil rights movement and the Great Society that Johnson built has ended all racism...........hasn’t it?

Personally, I’m hoping for a 2/3 majority in the house. Then, some little-used provisions of the Constitution could be used. Like refusing to seat Congressmen like this.

The Republican Party is complicit in this. Nominate some token opposition, then no backing for a serious campaign. Where I live, the party does the same thing. There is more than enough discontent to wrest control from the liberal socialists, but the Republicans just lie down.

Yep, you’re spot on.

1. Southside Chicago is like the Arizona border. More people are killed each day there than in Afghanistan.
2. This guy’s wife is campaigning for him while he uses the mental illness thing to keep the special prosecutor at bay because he cannot be served while under care. His wife can’t stand the pay cut.
3. Isn’t he the only Congressman who is having financial difficulties? Where has all the payola been going, not to mention his salary which we pay?
4. I suppose his district is far better off to have nobody representing them in Congress just as many of us with Congress was only in session 1 day a year.
5. Why vote in a Republican who will say he is about personal responsibility? They are better off keeping the status quo along with their friggin free cell phones.

People in Chicago have total faith in all things Jesse Jackson, even if there were a third one, and probably especially so.

You could paint a turd black and throw it on the sidewalk and they would vote for it.

That would be an improvement to the current situation. Turds do not, as a rule, trample the constitution nor spend printed/borrowed money.

The Republican Party in Illinois is a joke (Abe Lincoln is spinning in his tomb in Springfield); they almost never field a candidate in the city of Chicago or Cook County because of the Democrat stranglehold; i.e., retarded robot voters, corruption and stolen and manufactured votes. The Repubs don’t spend a dime here because they know it’s a waste of time and money. They haven’t run a single Romney ad there either. Incredibly sad.

Yep. Actually, the Democrats launched and perfected their strategy of buying votes right there in the Windy City. They called it ‘patronage’, but it's essentially the same thing as what the Democrats currently do to buy votes. They just expanded it to the federal level.

An interesting quote from a former Chicago Democrat ‘boss’ - Jacob (Jake) Arvey - “ Jacob “Jake” Arvey: “There are many definitions of politics: the art of compromise, the art of the possible. But to me, politics is the art of putting people under obligation to you.”

Nuff said...
