CHICAGO Battling mental illness and personal financial troubles, Rep. Jesse L. Jackson Jr. (D-Ill.) is a heavy favorite for reelection Nov. 6 despite a surreal campaign from which he has been absent for almost four months.
Jackson, 47, who disclosed this summer that he has bipolar depression and has undergone weeks of hospitalization, is convalescing in Washington and meeting occasionally with aides. He has been absent from the House of Representatives since June 8.
Whether he will campaign at all is in question. His reelection bid is being led by his wife, Sandi Jackson, who turned down interview requests.
Chicagoan Kevin Lampe, who is serving as a spokesman for the Jackson campaign, said Thursday that the lawmaker remained under medical care. "As soon as the doctors say he can get back to work, he'll get back to work, which includes campaigning," said Lampe, noting that voter registration efforts were underway and a get-out-the-vote push was planned.
DePaul University political scientist Wayne Steger said Jackson, whatever his woes, looked like a sure bet to carry the election, which is five weeks away. Steger points to the nominal opposition, the GOP's weak organization in Cook County and anticipation of a robust turnout by Democrats who aim to keep President Obama in the White House.
The new 2nd Congressional District, which stretches from Chicago's South Side and south suburbs into Will and Kankakee counties, is deep blue. More than 80% of the voters there cast ballots for Obama in 2008.....

After the Obama debacle, he is the great black hope.
Unlimited sick days? Short term disability? Long term disability?
Or does he just sit at home and collect a paycheck while not doing anything? Eh, he’s a Democrat. It would be hard to tell either way.
“the Great Society that Johnson built”
the Great DESTRUCTION OF Society that Johnson built
He exceed Obama in the quality of his Aholiness. I still think that he or his wife was involved in the Kennedy assassination. It may make me a nut but I’m not as cracked as some. The man was pure evil.
Why do you always notice these things after you push post. Preview just doesn’t help when my BP is up.
Other residents of Chicago threw out Dan Rostenkowski & voted in a GOPer for 1 term, but these leeches would never do that.
Has anyone sext, I mean text him lately to see how he is doing?
JJ Junior is hack for life. He will never be voted out. These dim bulb, race baiting scum always get returned to office by their benighted constituents
Chicago has their Jesse Jackson Jr.
Houston has their Shelia Jackson-Lee.
His father was heard to say, “ We juhsuhduh gi uho powa eeza.”
[We Jacksons don’t give up our power easily.]
Don’t think for a moment that if Rep. Gabby Giffords decided to run again she would have had the full backing of the DNC. Sen. Tim Johnson (D-SD) was incapacitated for months after a debilitating stroke and ran again 9 months latter without making any debates or public appearances with his opponent and only appearing in carefully scripted appearances to hide his disability.
IMO, the people in his district would vote for Hitler if he was on the ballot!
This has to be a joke.
L.A. has their Maxine Waters.
His reelection bid is being led by his wife who doesn’t want to talk about it? Ok. I’m a racist but I don’t want this mentally ill, corrupt jerk voting on laws that I have to obey. I want him out on the street digging through trash cans where he belongs.....along with mentally ill, corrupt Harry Reid. God, please help us!
Jesse Jackson Junior could be dead, but the zombie voters of the Chicago Democrat machine would reelect him by significant numbers. Dead or alive, Chicago pols with a “D” after their names are golden boys (or girls).
The best way to get him out of office would be to start a rumor in his district that he was foolin’ around with a married woman, whose man went and got some Voodoo put on Jesse. “Jesse be a curse. Stay away from him or it might be gettin’ you too!”
Do not underestimate the power of primitive superstition. I have seen otherwise sensible people lose their marbles over the appearance of an unexplained chicken’s foot.
Objective look at the Situation from the outside:
Junior Jackass is a Congresscritter gone nutters. Ms. Junior Jackass is a Chicago Alderman. They have homes in both Chicago and D.C. Now, depending on where they reside we can conclude . . .
a) Junior Jackass ain’t much of a Congresscritter
b) Ms. Junior Jackass ain’t much of an Alderman
c) The Junior Jackasses ain’t got much of a marrage
d) all of the above
Fla District 20 (talk about gerrymandered) has Debbie Wasserman-Schultz.
