Disturbing developments are sweeping across the greater Middle East. In Syria, tens of thousands of innocent people have been slaughtered. In Egypt, the Muslim Brotherhood has come to power, and the country's peace treaty with Israel hangs in the balance. In Libya, our ambassador was murdered in a terrorist attack. U.S. embassies throughout the region have been stormed in violent protests. And in Iran, the ayatollahs continue to move full tilt toward nuclear-weapons capability, all the while promising to annihilate Israel.
These developments are not, as President Obama says, mere "bumps in the road." They are major issues that put our security at risk.
Yet amid this upheaval, our country seems to be at the mercy of events rather than shaping them. We're not moving them in a direction that protects our people or our allies.
And that's dangerous. If the Middle East descends into chaos, if Iran moves toward nuclear breakout, or if Israel's security is compromised, America could be pulled into the maelstrom.
We still have time to address these threats, but it will require a new strategy toward the Middle East.
The first step is to understand how we got here. Since World War II, America has been the leader of the Free World. We're unique in having earned that role not through conquest but through promoting human rights, free markets and the rule of law. We ally ourselves with like-minded countries, expand prosperity through trade and keep the peace by maintaining a military second to none.
But in recent years, President Obama has allowed our leadership to atrophy. Our economy is stuck in a "recovery" that barely deserves the name. Our national debt has risen to record levels. Our military, tested by a decade of war, is facing devastating cuts...

This is good as far as it goes. But he needs to go farther. Romney needs to point out that nation-building is a disaster, that it is not the role of the U.S. to “bring freedom” to the Mideast. Our role is to protect our interests, not meddle in internal politics as we did in Egypt, Libya and are doing in Syria, with disastrous consequences.

Robert Kagan, one of Mittens top foreign policy advisers, was bashing Glenn Beck for predicting the Arab Spring would go straight to hell. Mittens seems to be of the Neo-Con type of thinking that pretends you can give Democracy to a bunch of barbarians and expect good results, and he does not explain what he would have done definitely with Egypt. Would he have bombed them or something? Assassinate a Mullah?
Machiavelli once noted that no people who have long been slaves can maintain their freedom for very long if they ever accidentally or by the graces of one man come into it. They quickly degenerate back into another tyranny, perhaps even more severe than before.
We’re seeing this in live action, and Obama has had no problem with helping the “freedom fighters” in Libya and Syria, which Mittens doesn’t seem to disagree with, despite the fact that they will likely end the same way as Egypt.
So what IS America’s foreign policy? Mittens isn’t offering a new one either, aside from saying he’ll perform Obama’s current policy in a more efficient way and declare Israel our greatest ally.
This is good. He spoke to this at the Valley Forge Military Academy last Friday (Which you won’t see in the TV coverage) I’m glad to see the elaboration/articulation in this op-ed.
nation building has been a disaster for a long time. The ONLY country we should have attacked was Afghanistan. We could have gotten rid of Saddam Hussane by using the Seal Team. Iraq cost us quite a bit not only American treasures but politically. We would most likely not have had to go through a 2006 Democratic majority or even have Obama as President.
Considering the mess we're in and the shite storm/tsunami of crap that's coming for the guy in charge, whether he tries to fix it or not, we're lucky someone with turn around experience is available and willing to take the job.
If what I can so far determine about Mitt Romney's character and personal integrity is true, then we'll be very lucky indeed.
I didn’t hear two words about this Op-Ed on talk radio today. If it wasn’t covered there, it wasn’t going to be covered on the news.
