This seems almost too good to be true. However, it can go either to a free market system, as we would like to see in this country again, or to a kleptocracy, as we see in Russia or China.

Even a Chinese style kleptocracy is paradise compared to what NK has now.

“Trade zones” in NK are routinely looted.
Good luck to Chinese investors...

They already have a “trade zone” where South Korean companies have factories. “Trade Zones” is not a market economy.

I have read accounts of North Koreans crossing the Yalu River into China, they do think it’s amazing. heh. If they went directly to Seoul, they might get culture shock.

It looks to me more like one set of corrupt morons will take leadership of the economy away from a different set of corrupt morons.

Good luck to the Chinese in any venture with the Norks. They once send a train load of emergency food supplies to NK and the Norks kept the train.

When do we see the first Apple factory there. NK would be even cheaper than China. We have to have that iPhone 6 or 7!

If true, that’s probably good news for the North Korean people. A little Deng Xiaoping style economic reform is better than continuing their Stalinist nightmare.

North Korea to try their version of Lenin's New Economic Policy (NEP). Hey, Deng Xiaoping did it for China.. the North Korean Communists want to be millionaires and billionaires too, ya know.

Those stupid Russians in Lenin's time let the masses become wealthy using free markets to build the economy and save the Revolution.. the Leninist ideologues had to put an end to NEP to save the Revolution from the Nepmen. The Soviet commies should have let Party members accumulate the wealth like Chi-Coms have done.

His love for jazz, etc. might have contributed to this. Or his jealousy of Samsung TV’s and Hyundai Equus - but I really think what pushed him over the edge in envy was “GANGNAM!”

To have a market economy you need to have the production of goods and services market wants to buy and a market that has the money to buy those goods and services. I see that as two major problems for North Korea.

He has a population that has utterly, completely forgotten how to do it. And anyone who did have that inclination has been killed off as an Enemy of the State. Epic Fail.

This is very big news. Baby Kim best watch his back because I am sure there are some in the Nork Military who won't like this at all.

Of course, their ChiCom counterparts might be able to educate them on how they can harness Crony Capitalism into more stuff to steal.

If the transition is successful, this will leave only Zimbabwe and Obama's inner circle as the only places on earth where pure state socialism is admired.

Good luck with that one. BO was recently quoted as saying “We tried that once, it didn’t work!”

Time for the NBA to expand with teams in the North and South. US clubs could play 2 in the North and 2 in the South on the same road trip. China would be jealous. Lot more fun than ping pong.

Reality: Obama attempting to switch USA to marxist economy.

What’s wrong here?

N. Korea's Supreme People's Assembly just ended a few days ago. It was supposed to approve sweeping economic reform measures. Instead it only managed to approve mandatory 12-year education. Something went wrong. Words have been coming out of NK for months which indicated that momentum was building up for economic reform, and observers in SK expected that it will culminate in the Assembly's approval of sweeping economic reforms. Very anti-climatic development. Another indication that things are not well in NK

They did some piddling little farm reform thing a bit back and nothing much seems to have come from that.

I am oh so close to making Kim Jung-eun a parody target for my new blog.

On top of that they have problem with the currency:

The Korean Peninsula has just celebrated Chuseok, the traditional harvest festival of the Korean people.

However, rising Chinese Yuan exchange rates have driven price inflation in North Korea to an extreme level in recent months, making it difficult for those without access to sufficient foreign currency to prepare the customary Chuseok ‘ancestral rites’ table.

Not an easy task to be a Supreme Leader! Both Supreme Leaders (NK and Iran) have similar problems.
