New York City’s oldest and largest abortion clinic stops abortions due to pro-life protests
Life Site News ^ | October 2, 2012 | Jill Stanek

Posted on 10/02/2012 3:01:58 PM PDT by NYer

With the autumn 40 Days for Life campaign just underway, this great news provides more evidence that sustained pro-life presence in front of abortion clinics hurts business, whether we think so at the time or not.

From New York Daily News, October 1, comes this article, the title and subtitle of which provides pretty much all the information you need to know: “Sunset Park clinic will no longer offer abortions, instead only outpatient surgical care: Protesters drove away doctors and patients, says clinic owner”:

A Sunset Park abortion clinic has shut down after Catholic protesters drove away doctors and patients, according to the owner of the clinic.

The Ambulatory Specialty Surgery Center of Brooklyn on 43rd St., closed earlier this month and will reopen in October as a new medical center providing outpatient surgeries, but not abortion.

Catholic leaders claimed the clinic’s closure after 22 years as a victory for their anti-abortion effort. Abortion advocates said they had never heard of a clinic in the city closing under pressure from protesters….

Lazar said the clinic tried to provide both abortions and other types of procedures, but doctors and patients refused to cross the throngs of religious protesters who tried to convince them not to go in….

The new clinic – slated to open as the New York Center for Specialty Surgery under the direction of a California-based medical firm – is undergoing renovations.

So far as many as 20 doctors have expressed interest in working at the new clinic – a stark difference from as recently as a month ago when Lazar struggled to find doctors willing to work there.

Monsignor Philip Reilly – leader of the group the Helpers of God’s Precious Infants – said he has gone to the center every week since it first opened to protest the abortions.

Reilly said both he and local Catholics were so happy, a celebration mass was held on Saturday at St. Michael’s Church on the same block as the clinic….

Julie Kashner, president of the Brooklyn and Queens chapter of the National Organization for Women… added there are others dealing with the same problem. NOW has planned a rally in support of another medical center offering abortions in Jamaica, Queens also struggling to find doctors and patients.

This clinic was apparently a very big, deadly fish. According to The Tablet:

“This was the oldest and largest abortion clinic in New York City and for many years, in the United States,” said Msgr. Reilly. “I believe more than a quarter of a million unborn children lost their lives there.”

To put it in perspective, that is the same number of Jews who were put to death at the Sobibor death camp during WWII.

Okay, this is great news. Now here’s the rest of the story.

Did the protests really cause the shut-down, or is this an abortion clinic that is being shuttered so Obama can point to it and claim, “This is what you can expect from Romney.”

We’ve got to look at every angle right now.

If Obama wins the election, I don’t think that’s going to be a big victory for ‘life’.

I certainly wouldn’t want to have surgery at a place of such great evil. How many other people feel the same way I do?

But do we really care? It’s one less clinic. I’m all for it. I’ve never believed that we were going to win or lose in the political sphere anyway.

Now, don’t get me wrong. I do think that the gop would act decisively to make abortion illegal. It’s just that they’d wait until about a month after the last clinic closed due to lack of business before doing so. Or are you really arguing that willard will act to change the status quo if elected?

I have mixed feelings. WLOF (Our Lady of Fatima) the Catholic Radio Station in Buffalo used to be an abortion clinic and the "surgery" room is actually their chapel. God can turn evil to good.

PRAISE GOD!

A group of us have been praying in front of the Planned Parenthood in Mansfield, Ohio, bi-weekly for 17 years. We are Pentecostals, Catholics and Baptists.

I know God will answer our prayers one day...Murder Inc. will be out of business and the building will be turned into a day care center.

Thank God!

I am so touched by this - I was born and raised within walking distance and used to swim in the Sunset Park pool every Summer. God only knows who out my family or friends families might have died there. Good riddance to that blight, and God bless the good people who achieved this.

As a Catholic, I can report hearing about threats to religious freedom just about every week. I don’t recall seeing anything like that before, except for pro-life issues.

Did the protests really cause the shut-down, or is this an abortion clinic that is being shuttered so Obama can point to it and claim, “This is what you can expect from Romney.”

But do we really care?  Yes, I do believe we should.  Look, I'm not arguing the closing of an abortin clinic is in and of itself a bad thing.  On it's own, it's a great thing.  If it does give Obama an edge toward re-election, and it's enough to toss the election to him, this could turn out very bad for the nation.  That's all I am saying.  I think you can understand where I'm coming from with this premise.

It’s one less clinic. I’m all for it.  And as far as it relates to less abortions, so do I.  What if you were to find out there is a 50/50 chance this clinic will be up and running again on 11/07/2012.  Would you understand then what was truly taking place here?  And if Obama were re-relected by a very narrow margine, what would your take then be?

I’ve never believed that we were going to win or lose in the political sphere anyway.  Okay, but this isn't just about abortion.  It's about another four years for Obama to dismantle the nation.  And I state that with obvious reservation that my premise may be inaccurate.  I'm just tossing it out there knowing how the Obama team would likely game this issue for political gain.

Now, don’t get me wrong. I do think that the gop would act decisively to make abortion illegal. It’s just that they’d wait until about a month after the last clinic closed due to lack of business before doing so.  Yes, we're on the same page with regard to that.

Or are you really arguing that willard will act to change the status quo if elected?
Not at all, but you can't possibly be making the case that Obama would only reference Romney's likely actions with honestly.  He'd cast Romney as a guy that would close every abortion clinic, even though you and I know there's about 0.005% of that actually taking place.   The Obama team will do anything to achieve re-election.

Thanks for the response.  We've got a lot in common here.  Don't let my raising a possible down side here, cause you to think otherwise.

This is just wonderful!! Perhaps this was a sign from heaven that the celebration mass was held at St. Michael’s as it was the archangel’s feast day on the 29th. By this I mean a reminder that St. Michael is a great intercessor for help in the battle against the abortion slaughter.

Margaret Sanger opened her first clinic in Brooklyn, I believe - was it in this area of Brooklyn does anyone know?

It is inspiring me to get out there more at our local PP and pray the rosary.
