The Obama administration plans to buy an Illinois prison that at one point was considered for housing Guantanamo prisoners -- with Republican lawmakers now claiming the purchase would open the door for ultimately carrying out the Guantanamo transfer.
Administration officials, though, denied that they were looking for a new home for Guantanamo inmates. They insisted the decision to buy Thomson Correctional Center, an under-used state prison 150 miles west of Chicago, was a move to alleviate overcrowding and create jobs in the process...

The crime rate in Chicago has dropped so much that the state has no use for the facility that is located within 150 miles of town? Good news, good news! It would appear that all of those six figure teachers are performing at an amazing level creating productive members of society who abstain from crime. /s
"the Obama administration delivered a $165 million payment Tuesday to a federal court in Rockford, Ill., to buy the Thomson Correctional Center from the state of Illinois, bypassing a Republican congressman from Virginia who has put the brakes on "
Unknown at this time if GITMO prisoners will be housed there.
Right across the river from Davenport, Iowa.
So if these Muzzies can swim, better stock up on weapons.
Gitmo inmates? More likely he’s planning to put us American citizens in there.
There are some worries about the situation, yes. You wouldn't want to attempt to swim the Mississippi there, maybe other places, but there are other ways to get across.
If Romney had any b@lls, he’s say
“This is where I’m sending Barag after he’s convicted of treason in 2013”
0bama just wants terrorists to make their target America rather than overseas.
More than likely it is an underhanded, if not entirely illegal, attempt to bail out Illinois. Our idiot voters have put state governments in office where The Disaster learned his How to Bankrupt a Government techniques.
This move throws another 165 million into the yawning maw of Illinois finances. Tis a pittance compared to the deficits but greatly appreciated.
He knows he will lose this election and is cramming all his unfinished business into his final days in office.
Heh, heh, that’s one ugly chicken coming home to roost!!!
I think you nailed it!
Bingo. Gov. Quinn’s solution is to have the FEDS bail us out. IL Democrats don’t know how to say, “No”. We have a spending problem that cannot be solved by Democrats.
Illinois state prisons currently hold about 30 percent more inmates than they were built for. Why they are selling this one I’m not sure. There may be some real problems as a result of defective materials, construction or design. This may be a huge scam at $165 million. Illinois is broke.
[Thomson cost $128 million to build in 2001. It was supposed to replace aging lockups around the state, but union workers at those prisons didn't want to move and state officials didn't have the backbone to make them. So Thomson sat mostly empty for a decade. It was declared surplus property in 2010, clearing the way for a sale.]
Obama is paying his home state of Illinois $165 million for 10-year-old prison that cost $128 million to build. And who knows how many millions will be required to renovate it? This is a scam.
follow the money to the latest Obama slumlord bud who has figured out some way to ride this gravytrain, stinks of Axelrod and Rahm
How can Obama pay for anything that isn’t approved by the House of Representatives???
How many challenges to our Constitution are the Republicans going to stand for?
That was my first thought as well.
On both counts you got me.
Is there a couple of hundred million bucks just lying around in the Executive branch’s petty cash?
