Lockheed: Sure, we’ll keep our workers in the dark about layoffs
Hotair ^

To quote Glenn Reynolds, they told me if I voted for John McCain that the corporations would conspire with the government to keep the working class in the dark — and they were right! Normally, Democrats would demand that companies considering layoffs tell their employees about it. In fact, Democrats passed a law requiring corporations to do so, the WARN Act of 1988, which they passed with veto-proof majorities and which became law without then-President Ronald Reagan’s signature.

These days, they’re pressuring companies to keep quiet about layoffs that will occur when sequestration kicks in, and Lockheed has buckled:

What would you have them do?

I'm pretty sure the part that wasn't reported was, if you don't play ball, you won't get any new government business.

As it was, they just landed a fat maintenance contract at Cherry Point.

I think they should notify their employees that the Obama regime has insisted they keep layoff notices secret until after the election. For further information, call their congressmen. And wish them a nice day.

In a free society, I would expect the CEO to go on TV and say, "Look, the White House just threatened to withhold all future contracts from my company is I didn't break the law, but I'm not comfortable with that. So, I will be informing my workers about upcoming layoffs, and -- as you see -- I am informing the media about the White House's attempt to get me to break the law in order to assist the president in his re-election campaign."

But we know we don't live in a free society, so that won't happen.

So ... you're telling us that Barack Hussein Soetoro 0dinga Whatever 0bama is bribing Lockheed's management with taxpayer money, so that they will conspire with him to violate Federal Law.

I agree. That's exactly what's happening.

We do not live in a Republic, we are not governed by rule of law. We are ruled by the whim of the Maximum Leader. We live in a Third-World despotism.

We just don't have the death squads.

Yet.

I’d call Lockheed a whore but at least 0bama’s promised to pay them for the delay.

When you’re a government contractor, the government basically owns you. You do exactly what they want you to do, and you smile while you’re doing it.

The government can put Lockheed out of business in a heartbeat.

LM has always been one of the best at aligning to the current administration desires. How else do you think the make money on programs that are overrun multiple times the contract value or have gone through Nun-McCurdy multiple times and still get win more contracts....

All this tells me is that LM has a strong belief that Obama will be reelected....

This is just silly. Like they don’t already know? Puhleeze. Shhhh, uh oh don’t tell anybody I told you, but I heard Barak Obama doesn’t want you to know you’re about to get canned. oops let the cat out of the bag, my bad.

IMO, this makes it worse. How am I wrong? Tell ya what, when I worked at Boeing, the entire time I was there, there were rumors of layoffs around the corner, and rumors of rumors. They know it, believe me they know it. Even if it weren’t true, it’s true, we’re getting layed off. SMH

LM plays both sides. They knew that whatever they did
they would be screwed. This is just the kiss before.
The folks who work there have seen the writing on the wall
for a while now.

Perhaps L-M management did something like that internally.

Saying it in public would be suicide.

So let me see if I understand what you’re saying...

If employees think there might be a layoff, the company has no legal obligation under the WARN Act to notify them?

In which case Obama didn’t need to commit felony conspiracy with them to violate the WARN Act, and therefore Obama didn’t need to promise to pay for any legal expenses they might have from breaking Federal law, he just did it because he’s a nice guy?

So none of this really happened, right?

Uh huh.

LM should release a memo saying to ALL the employees that SOME of you are getting laid off but Obama wont let us tell you who

*sigh*

When was the last time you heard a conversation that went anything like:

"May I sit here?"

"It's a free country."

My son works for LM. The employees were told they would get WARN notices the 1st of Nov. He even knows how many in his dept. are being laid off. We’re hoping he isn’t one of them.....guess we won”t know in advance, now.

I would point out that not only did they apparently tell every employee that they would be sending layoff notices out, they just told every employee that they would not be sending layoff notices out, and why.

It hardly looks like they are keeping them in the dark, unless they are all idiots. Which I suspect they are not.

I hear you and I’m also little chagrined at the idea that LM will needlessly stress a lot of employees who aren’t getting laid off.

Morale must be great there.

Oh no I don’t mean to let that lawless imposter off the hook at all. My point is that he is just drawing attention to his thumbing his nose at the law and how shameless he is doing that, all the while pretending that these people are somehow gonna be fooled that their jobs are safe? I don’t think so they know it just like you and I know it. It’s a joke and IMO he’s making himself the butt of it is my point.

You’ve got to be kidding.

They are required BY LAW to notify.

That you defend the way Lockheed had to take some back-assed and ILLEGAL way to inform their employees in an effort to appease government thugs is reprehensible.

Have your son (and others) get together and tell LM that if they do not COMPLY WITH THE LAW then they WILL SUE

(the president cannot give ‘waivers’ to allow you to disobey a law)

I’m not defending anybody. I’m pointing out that the employees aren’t “in the dark”. There’s multiple major news stories, and they were all told why they weren’t getting layoff notices.

I would assume that everybody in the defense industry is keenly aware of what is going on with sequestration.

I think the defense companies should all send out notices, and ignore the Obama quidance. On the other hand, if I were a stockholder and a company I owned lost contracts in retaliation, I’d be perturbed. Corporations might be cowardly, but it’s a lot easier for an individual to stand up and take a risk, than it is for a publicly-owned company.

That’s not defending any company for not sending out notices. There is a difference between understanding and agreement. And there is a difference between not finding fault, and agreeing.
