Fred Barnes: Romney's Dangerous Game of Playing It Safe
WSJ ^ | 10/3/12 | Fred Barnes

Posted on 10/02/2012 6:07:44 PM PDT by PAR

Mr. Romney should do in the debate what he hasn't done in his speeches, media appearances or TV ads—in other words, in his entire campaign. He must make a forceful case that America's survival as a prosperous and respected nation is at stake. In that context, the election becomes an urgent choice between a national turnaround and further decline. The Romney advertising has been especially sorry at drawing that distinction. The generally bland commercials feel like they could have run at any time in the past 40 years.

BushBot hits nail on the head. He is right. Romney needs to go after blood in the debates - right for the Obamabastard’s scrawny juglar.

“America’s survival as a prosperous and respected nation is at stake. In that context, the election becomes an urgent choice between a national turnaround and further decline.”

That is so, so true. Mitt Romney has failed completely to inform the public at how much is at stake and how important this election is. His bland, cookie-cutter campaign is a disservice to the country and I’m glad that I voted against him in the primary.

"So far, Mr. Romney's extremely conventional campaign has failed to convince many voters that he has those solutions. The worsening debt crisis, slow economic growth, persistently high unemployment, millions of dropouts from the job market, more people seeking disability payments than finding jobs, 45 million now receiving food stamps—Mr. Romney talks about these national ills, but he does so without sketching out how he'd cure them. He focuses on ends — that is, goals—rather than means."

Unfortunately Romney has a cadre of stupidvisors giving him extremely poor advice.

I think that Romney has been playing it just right so far. However, it is now time to ratchet up the rhetoric. The debates would be the time to take off the gloves.

ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ. I could care less what Fred Barnes says about anything, unless I want to know what the conservative establishment conventional wisdom is on any particular issue. Fred lost me with his relentless Bush cheerleading even on issues like whether Bush was spending too much.

If Romney doesn’t come out swinging, he’ll lose just like the wuss who defeated him in 2008...McCain.

The trend in the latest polls is in Mitts favor. They are now virtually tied. I do agree that now is the time for Mitt to ratchet things up. Maybe the debates will be the time he does it.

If I could, I’d relay to Romney some lessons I learned from my father in little league. They apply directly to his debate strategy:

1 - If you’re going to go down, go down swinging
2 - Swing hard in case you hit it

Swing away, Mitt. We’re all waiting.

Read the comments on the WSJ site. They are all about ideas, as it should be, and not about Fred Barnes. Because if it’s about personalities of the commentators, then they all suck and they all have holes in their socks and dirt behind their fingernails. Let’s grow up.

Amen, Mr Barnes.

Barnes is a smart guy, and I’ve always ID’d him as a reluctant neo-con. I think the neo-con “democratize the mid-east” has been proven to be faulty thinking.

I think Fred’s probably just slipped back into his natural position as a strong-America, Reagan republican.

You must understand, this is the very same Fred Barnes that castigated conservatives in 2008 for daring to tell the truth about Obama, and thought McCain’s way of politicking was best.

With inside the beltway Barnes, a Republican can never win. Fred needs to just shut up, retire, and just go away.

I got tired of listening to his act when he was gushing all over Obama and the way he spoke and carried himself during the 2008 election cycle.

Thanks for this thread.

From Barnes’ Article: “ - - - In August, a top adviser spelled out for me the strategy of the Romney campaign. It was simple. The economy, after fours years of Mr. Obama’s presidency, is in bad shape. Thus the incumbent loses. So long as Mr. Romney doesn’t cause himself trouble by giving the president easy targets, he’ll be elected.”

IOW, from August on Romney has been playing “not to lose.”

In Politics as in Football, playing not to lose keeps the score close, and usually results in a loss, right at the end.

If Romney loses, perhaps Fred Barnes will do us all a favor and tell us who this Romney “top advisor” idiot is.

This advisor should never be in winner-take-all professions such as politics, or football.

Romney has shown he can throw hard punches when he has to. I'm not as worried about how he'll do as much as I'm concerned about how the Communist Media will spin it, and how much of the gullible public will buy what they're spinning.

What I do hope for Romney: I hope he improves on his ad libs, and will be able to stop the liberal spin and traps the moderator(s) will try to pull.

I think that Romney has been playing it just right so far.

You're in the minority. Not necessarily a bad thing. Frankly, I'd hate to see Romney take every piece of advice offered from this forum, including what I would offer as my own: this is not the time for The United States of America to grant four more years to a racist, crypto-communist, but time to prosecute him and his enablers. Say it, Mitt!

Maybe Romney’s internal polls show him leading. Usually the candidate that plays it safe is the one that is leading, and the one who goes on the attack is the one who is losing.
