Obama Outspending Romney on TV Ads
New York Times ^ | Tuesday September 2, 2012

DENVER — For every five commercials Mitt Romney and his allies ran here in this vital swing state in the last two weeks of September, President Obama and Democrats ran seven, accusing Mr. Romney of having a “tough luck” attitude toward the middle class and asserting that Mr. Obama has brought the economy back from the brink.

In Florida, the disparity was greater. The number of pro-Obama ads outnumbered pro-Romney ads by almost 50 percent — some 13,000 of them accusing Mr. Romney of outsourcing jobs to China, trying to gut Medicare and hiding his tax returns from the public.

The story was the same in most of most of the other battlegrounds. In Ohio and in Iowa, in Norfolk, Va., and on the Boston stations that feed New Hampshire, Mr. Obama out-advertised his rival after the parties’ nominating conventions, according to data compiled by the political advertising monitoring firm Kantar Media/CMAG.

Mr. Obama’s continued advantage on the airwaves, which counters Democratic predictions that he would be far outgunned by Mr. Romney and his allied “super PACS” by now, may help explain why polls in most of the competitive states have shifted in his direction over the last month.

I heard Haley Barbour explain this morning that Team Romney failed to buy ad buys slot earlier when they were cheaper but now with ad buys being more expensive, Romney is spending twice as much on ad buys which is eating up his money advantage so they can't shell out as many commercials as thought. So somebody on Romney staff messed up big time

If you look at videos on Yahoo, an Obama ad plays every time you click on another video.

They weren’t able to buy earlier before general election time.....the incumbent has a built-in advantage here, and there will be plenty of ads coming out soon enough. They are already starting to air more.

The truth is people are only now starting to pay attention (at least the ones who haven’t decided). Now is a good time and it doesn’t take a ton of ads just a few really good ones

It’s not an error, it’s the law. Until Romney was the actual nominee of the Party, he was not permitted spend money for the general election. Please stop buying into the agitprop that this is a poorly run campaign.

Thank you for the correction. It’s still driving me batty. I want to see MORE ADS to combat this pervasive worship of The One! Sigh.

I know how you feel. If Romney doesn’t win this time he needs to just give it up. If you can’t beat Barry Soetoro, you’ll never beat anybody else.

Why wouldn’t the same rule about ad buying apply to Obama? He wasn’t the official nominee of the Democrat party until after the convention which was a week after the Republican convention. Seems like if the law says you can’t buy air time until after you are the official nominee, Obama shouldn’t have been able to buy ads until the convention voted to make him their nominee. Romney should have been buying ads earlier than Obama.

In Texas, the presumptive GOP candidate David Dewhurst, spent 25 million on really awful ads. They were so bad that it turned off the people who would normally have voted for him. Ted Cruz won the primary run-off and by all accounts will become our next senator.

From what I hear Obama is running ads during soap opera time, I guess thinking that women's lady parts best respond during soap operas.

It is quite possible that he will pull a Dewhurst and turn off the female soap opera vote.

One thing women don't cotton to is somebody messing around with their soaps.

I know that an incumbent president has an advantage but Barbour was being honest with his opinion with why Obama has an advantage and Romney can’t:

Haley said on the Laura Ingraham show that team Romney had to wait until after the convention to buy ad time and that the price of ad buy is extremely more expensive now and eating up all their money.

He said they should have bought the ad slots earlier after the convention than NOW, when it was once much cheaper. So even though he raised a lot of presidential money, it’s not really a lot if you have to spend twice as much for what you need to do. That is why they are stilll fundraising like crazy. So somebody did mess up

Crossroads Launches Biggest Ad Campaign Yet

American Crossroads super PAC and its affiliate Crossroads GPS are about to unleash their biggest ad offensive of the 2012 campaign, with $16 million going to one week’s worth of TV and radio ads in eight key presidential states and four Senate battlegrounds. The Crossroads groups are slated to spend $300 million in total during the election campaign to boost GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney and his fellow Republicans.

He had to first win a primary and secondly get donations to his campaign to rise. That took time and probably cheap buys for ads were getting slimmer as time went by.

These super pacs should have known better.
If ads needed to be bought earlier, they should have done it knowing they would back who ever the non-Obama candidate would be IMO.

Yes, and part of getting this right has to include making it clear how many of the Occupancy’s ads are outright Big Lies or serious distortions of the truth.

Given the screwed and depressing economy and the dangerously pro-terrorist/pro-fascist foreign policy, the road to the WH is wide open for Romney. The American public (for the most part) realizes that a big Change is absolutely needed ...

But Romney has to go on the attack. All this pussy-footing around will cost him, and the USA, the election.

He is very capable of leading a winning campaign. Just look at how he went after, and beat, Gingrich and Santorum.

The same skill applied now will result in a great victory.

Obama raised a lot of money during the primaries, in which he was uncontested. He was allowed by law to spend that money, and to use what money that was left over for the general campaign. That’s where he has a distinct advantage.

“Romney should have been buying ads earlier than Obama.”

So...given that he didn’t know his circumstances, how could he do that?

BTW, given the polls, I think the Romney campaign is smart to hold back.

Hold back? Really? People are voting now. This is when a campaign should begin peaking. Mean while Romney is rebooting. It is estimated that up to 40% of all ballots will be cast before Election Day.

Isn’t that the truth.

Sometimes I think he’s throwing the election like McCain did.

“If Romney doesn’t win this time he needs to just give it up.”

The Presidency is not like other offices. You lose once, you generally don’t get a second chance. Richard Nixon notwithstanding.

“If you can’t beat Barry Soetoro, you’ll never beat anybody else.”

I agree. This is the most winnable election of my lifetime. If you can’t beat this hussein, how are you going to beat hillary?

Erroneous Obama campaign ad about how Romney is going to raise taxes by $2000, when Romney can’t even effect the Bush Tax Cut legislation by this December;
http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2012/10/01/middle-income-families-could-face-2000-tax-hike-next-year-study-shows/#ixzz28ABKGM00

A typical middle-income family making $40,000 to $64,000 a year could see its taxes go up by $2,000 next year if lawmakers fail to renew a lengthy roster of tax cuts set to expire in December, according to a new report Monday.
...”The fiscal cliff threatens an unprecedented tax increase at year end,” says the Tax Policy center report.
