A new poll finds that Mitt Romney's secretly recorded comments about the "47 percent" of Americans who do not pay taxes did more to turn voters off than President Obama's "You didn't build that" remark at a campaign rally in Virginia.
According to a survey released Tuesday night by NBC News and The Wall Street Journal, 45 percent of voters said Romney's comments at a private fundraiser gave them a negative impression of the candidate. Alternatively, 23 percent said the comment gave them a more positive review of the candidate.
“There are 47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what,” Romney says in video from the event, made public by Mother Jones. “All right, there are 47 percent who are with him, who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe the government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to healthcare, to food, to housing, to you name it.”
Romney adds his "job is not to worry about those people. I'll never convince them they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives.”
By contrast, voters actually had a positive impression of Obama's "you didn't build that" line during a rally in Roanoke, Va. Some 36 percent of respondents said they had a positive reaction to the comment, versus 32 percent who reported a negative reaction.
"If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you've got a business — you didn't build that. Somebody else made that happen," the president said in July.

Why bother bringing it up? Kneeling for government crumbs is considered an act of nobility in New America.
That is, on the face of it, an absurd statement.
“You didn’t build that” was one of the most emotionally charged things ever said by a politician.
47% could mean darned near anything.

I hear ya. If the allegedly wealthy would just vote like the greedy SOBs the media paints them as, we’d have a few more percentage points of polling in the bag. Instead, the affinity so many wealthy feel is a reflection of some kind of liberal guilt. And, they being no more intelligent than the median, their heads are filled with MSM nonsense and they (like most others) don’t think past the bumper sticker level.
Reality fans have a tough row to hoe, that’s a fact.
One happened two weeks ago, and has been trumptered nonstop by the media and campaign. The other was three months ago, and has not really been mentioned since the convention. There is no doubt that ‘didn’t build that’ quote cemented the support of a lot of had working people, especially business owners and employees of smaller companies. It is indisputable.
The 47 video has had an effect for sure, definitely as a rallying cry to their base, but probably not of much effect on the middle voters who are largely in agreement about the recipient class. .
It is an odd thing about people doing well at work and in business, and voting against our economic system, I remember being a young man in the very early 1970s and coming to realize that corporations were not conservative and pro-capitalist, it was a strange realization.

I think the only people upset by the “47%” remark are the 47%. The only people I have heard remark about it are Obamists. They were going to vote O anyway.
The people irritated by the “you didn’t build that” remark are the people who do build that. They are the ones who can be persuaded to vote Romney. They do not see themselves as the 47%.
Or, better yet, I’m gonna get me some of that!
Obama is running a deceitful ad here in Florida re: the 47% comment. As Romney’s taped statement runs, they show black-and-white photos of elderly veterans, poor single mother and children, senior citizens. Of course, they should actually be showing the “Obama Phone Woman.” All his ads here have been aimed at the elderly and scare tactics.
Let’s not forget that 150,000 or so tax filers receive 91.7% of the gross annual personal income in the U.S. This is extraordinary and given that it is clear that neither the Senate nor the House is going to take any action to avoid the acute distress that is about to befall those currently living high on their cut of 8.3% are you surprised that Romney’s cowardly drivel is not being accepted.
Let’s pretend THE FOREIGNER is a great president and FAST & FURIOUS, ELIGIBILITY ISSUES, OBAMACARE, BENGAZHI, ERIC WITHHOLDER, LEAKS IN OUR BORDERS, GREEN STIMULUS FRAUD, BAD CALLS ON ECONOMY, never happened and talk about which MEANINGLESS PHRASE hurt WHICH CANDIDATE MORE. Any wonder why the american people have turned you leftist spin doctors in the MSM off and pay ZERO ATTENTION to what you FRAUDS have to say.
It took me far longer to come to that realization, also being a young man in the 70’s. I was quite liberal then. It must have something to do with hedging ones’ bets, or following the example of Buffett, who makes no bones and does not hesitate when it comes to buttering both sides of the bread.

I grew up in a very conservative household but voted, in my young years, for the Peace and Freedom party and Carter which my mother never let me live down.
As soon as I made a pay check, I understood and never went back.
Amazing you would say that. That's what I tell people, too. In 1972, I worked for the local McGovern office (until he dropped Eagleton and showed he had no integrity). In 1973, I started earning a paycheck and have not voted for a Democrat since.
Ironically, if Romney cannot win it this year, I likely will never vote for a Republican again.

I think you may have me pegged a little incorrectly. I’ve been here on FR for 13 years, and simply commenting on the situation. Because of the media and Obama spending, the 47% is front and center on this campaign, so they obviously think it is going to be effective. All I said was in survey (especially and NBC survey manufactured to help build the narrative), it is not surprising right now that a recent story getting major coverage gets a larger response among those surveyed.
The Obama gaffe was nearly three months ago, and the Romney campaign has used it effectively and helped build a strong following, even among some that might have been on the fence. It was a powerful look into Obama’s world view. As I wrote many times, the sentence previously was more damning, where his condensation toward productive small business people was just dripping. He was trying to whip up union and Dem-leaning working class voters into a frenzy that they are being jilted in an unfair world. It was classic Marxism. At the heart of it, that’s what he is.
