Roanoke police are investigating after a home invasion in the northwest part of the city turned deadly late Tuesday night, authorities said.
Officers responded at 11:15 p.m. to the Westwood Village Apartments in the 800 block of Westwood Boulevard to find a man shot dead in a lower-level hallway, police said.
Police spokeswoman Aisha Johnson said detectives determined that a man in an apartment answered a knock at the door when two men tried to force their way through. Police said the man later told detectives he started to fight with the intruders, one of whom wore a ski mask and carried a gun.
During the fight, a second person inside the apartment fired a gun at one of the intruders. The bullet from that shot proved fatal. The male intruder was pronounced dead at the scene, Johnson said.
Police said theyre withholding the identity of the deceased intruder until his relatives are notified.
The second intruder ran from the apartment, and police remain on the lookout for him. Police described him as a black man standing just over 6 feet tall and weighing between 215 and 230 pounds.
Authorities have not charged anyone at this time.
At 10 a.m. today, neighbors were still clustered outside the apartment building, chatting about the shooting. Two officers remained posted outside the complex, which was roped off with yellow crime scene tape. A police forensics unit was parked outside the entrance.
Anyone with information about this case is asked to call Roanoke police at 853-5959 or Crime Line at 344-8500.
Sorry about the bloodstains on the homeowner's floor.
Another Obama voter bites the dust.
Always nice to have back-up.
If you want on/off the VA Ping List, please freepmail me. Thanks!
Well it looks like a citizen just ensured another job opening.
For some reason though, I feel NONE of the parties involved have ‘clean hands’.
Just a hunch....
A group of friends and I went to a shooting range last night. First time I’d ever been to a range. Loved it!
One Obama voter, four or five Obama votes...still...
you will probably be proved right, that is a very rough neighborhood.
In that section of Roanoke I’m sure it is probably drug related. Happens very often here. Probably some of Holder’s “people”.
Good for you, HokieMom. You are very wise.
