AARP has a message for President Obama: Stop using us to score political points.
Obama cited the nonpartisan senior lobby twice in Wednesday's debate when arguing against Mitt Romney's Medicare proposals.
The remarks prompted a polite statement from AARP Senior Vice President John Hishta asking candidates to refrain from mentioning the group.
"AARP has never consented to the use of its name by any candidate or political campaign," Hishta said.
"AARP is a nonpartisan organization, and we do not endorse political candidates nor coordinate with any candidate or political party."
Hishta sent a similar dispatch in August, when the Obama campaign released an ad using AARP quotes to attack Paul Ryan's Medicare policy.
"The next president and Congress will decide the future of Medicare, and the candidates owe voters straight talk not just 30-second ads about what their plans will mean for today's seniors and future retirees," Hishta said in August.
On Wednesday, Obama cited AARP estimates to argue that savings from the healthcare law will extend Medicare's lifetime. He also told Romney that "AARP has said that your plan would weaken Medicare substantially."
AARP supported Obama's signature healthcare law, prompting criticism from conservatives who believe the group is more political and left-leaning than it says.
On Thursday, Reps. Phil Gingrey (R-Ga.) and Charles Boustany Jr. (R-La.) aired these complaints after AARP moved to distance itself from Obama.
"In reality, senior AARP leadership and key White House officials worked closely together on the passage of President Obama's healthcare reform," Gingrey and Boustany wrote in a press memo.
"AARP leadership consistently ignored the deluge of calls from members, the majority of which opposed ObamaCare, and instead continued working in conjunction with the White House to perfect their 'messaging' to seniors," the memo stated.
Nonpartisan, eh? Is this from the Onion?
Non-partisan my a**. They are Obama kissers from the word go!
AARP membership must be hurting after their support of Obamacare, otherwise why not continue to back Obama? Well you AARPholes, time to pay the piper for your support of that fascist.
Yeah, nonpartisan. That’s funny.
Yeah, nonpartisan. That’s funny.
and, now they say they're neutral...
right --> s....pffffft
Bingo. AARP’s bottom line is suffering due to their association with Obama and Obamacare. AND THEY AIN’T SEEN NOTHING’ YET. How did they not see this coming? F’ing idiots.
AARP you made a deal with the devil now live with it.
Cannot have it both ways.
Besides, their benefits such as discount travel and insurance, can be had elsewhere and at better prices.
Seems AARP is starting to see the writing on the wall. Every time Obozo mentions AARP, more RPs tell AARP to pound sand.
I do wish AARP would send me another membership solicitation so I could again have the enjoyment of stuffing their crap into their Postage Paid Business Reply Envelope, spending their money to send it back to them.
Translated to mean that rank and file “blue hairs” are not happy and are going to cancel their membership after beig sold down the river over Obamacare.
AARP, Stop sending me your crap!
I think as we draw nearer to the election, disdain for 0bamacare will grow not wane.
Gee whillikers, the AARP didn’t seem to mind being connected with Obama here. Why, it looks like he was even given permission to use its logo ...
‘... “`Tu’n me loose, fo’ I kick de natal stuffin’ outen you,’ sez Brer Rabbit, sezee, but de Tar-Baby, she ain’t sayin’ nuthin’. She des hilt on, en de Brer Rabbit lose de use er his feet in de same way. Brer Fox, he lay low. Den Brer Rabbit squall out dat ef de Tar-Baby don’t tu’n ‘im loose he butt ‘er cranksided. En den he butted, en his head got stuck. Den Brer Fox, he sa’ntered fort’, lookin’ dez ez innercent ez wunner yo’ mammy’s mockin’-birds.
“`Howdy, Brer Rabbit,’ sez Brer Fox, sezee. `You look sorter stuck up dis mawnin’,’ sezee, en den he rolled on de groun’, en laft en laft twel he couldn’t laff no mo’. `I speck you’ll take dinner wid me dis time, Brer Rabbit. I done laid in some calamus root, en I ain’t gwineter take no skuse,’ sez Brer Fox, sezee.”
Here Uncle Remus paused, and drew a two-pound yam out of the ashes.
“Did the fox eat the rabbit?” asked the little boy to whom the story had been told.
“Dat’s all de fur de tale goes,” replied the old man. “He mout, an den agin he moutent. Some say Judge B’ar come ‘long en loosed ‘im - some say he didn’t. I hear Miss Sally callin’. You better run ‘long.” ‘
Probably considered racist nowadays but there’s much wisdom in the Uncle Remus stories.
I do that weekly.....everytime I get one of their crap ads, I load the envelop and send it back to them......makes me feel grand!!!!
AARP stands to make $1 billion over the next 10 years on Obamacare. Bipartisan? Please!
I used to live in thew WDC area. The AARP main office building is located in Arlington VA across from downtown WDC. It is an opulent palace. I found it very interesting that AARP members are not allowed inside that building. AARP is a big rip-off on its members. Non-partisan? ...Bwahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!
Throwing Obummer under the bus?
This reminds me...
Is there a way to get off AARP’s mailers?
DH just retired and we are getting flooded with AARP-Crap.
Øblowme endorsements have been the kiss of death. I hope he continues singing their “praises”.
I called AARP numerous times after they supported ObamaCare and gave them a piece of my mind while canceling my membership. I guess it took a while to process my cancellation. But they kept sending me renewal notices and credit card offers. I used the postage paid return envelopes to mail back all kinds of interesting things. I wonder how many other people did the same thing. Now I no longer receive AARP mail.
“I do wish AARP would send me another membership solicitation so I could again have the enjoyment of stuffing their crap into their Postage Paid Business Reply Envelope, spending their money to send it back to them.”
I do that too! And I write on the paperwork that I will never join until/unless they quit being a partisan org.
riiiight...and I'm an astronaut
> I do wish AARP would send me another membership
> solicitation so I could again have the enjoyment of
> stuffing their crap into their Postage Paid Business
> Reply Envelope, spending their money to send it back to them.
Too bad those envelopes are so small, a lot of household trash could be send to them.
send = sent
So is Media Matters, Move-On.org, msnbc, abcseebsnbcnytimeswashpohuffpo etc.
Sounds like they’re getting tired of AMAC stealing their members away.
I wish I was still getting their crappy mail. I loved stuffing interesting things in the prepaid mailers and sending it back.
AARP is so far up the communists liberal butts if couldn’t be more corrupt.
Yeah, right. nonpartisan. you can go to their website and “find out who to vote for”. Naturally, the democrats have their pics on the site and they give all of the “correct” answers to the skewed questions.
Hopefully found how to get off their mailing list:
(found on various sites)
You can stop AARP junk mail through several convenient methods:
e-mail AARP: email@example.com; (subject line: “unsubscribe”)
call AARP at 1-888-OUR-AARP (1-888-687-2277);
write AARP at AARP Membership Center, 3200 E. Carson Street, Lakewood, CA 90712;
((Because of the nature of AARP mailings, it can take up to 14 weeks for AARP junk mail and that from associated companies to subside.
When contacting AARP to stop junk mail, be sure to specify that you do not want your name re-sold or provided to any of their affiliates or otherwise endorsed companies.))
The cover is being blown!
Medicare Advantage, which is very popular with seniors, is getting whacked under Obamacare.
YOU OWN THIS!!!! You can’t distance yourself know!!!
Re: Junkmail from AARP. It’s a small matter but I always send their prepaid envelope back empty. At the very least they have to pay the postage. They are definitely partisan. I’m in an HMO and I like it. They, along with Obama undermined it. Their reward? One billion dollars as a shill for the insurance companies that sell Medigap policies. I won’t have anything to do with them. Return those envelopes!
“Come on, Dear Leader!
If you keep citing us you’ll blow our cover. We’re flacking for you in our mailings, our magazine and every way possible. But we’ve already lost a majority of our membership who could think for themselves and figured out what we are up to. If you keep this up even the dim bulbs will figure it out and we’ll lose them, too!
Love from your adoring subjects at AARP.
actually, AARP became the sales agent for the United Health Care Medicare advantage series of policies last year. I have such a policy I bought direct from United. The stuff they send says AARP/United Health Care.
I raise hell with them every time they call and they call a lot.
The new renewal period began October 1 and the new ads on TV for United Medicare advantage have dropped the AARP connection.
AARP took a money hit when it endorsed Obamacare. They are gun shy about hitching a ride on the wrong bandwagon.
AARP is absolutely libreal/progressive partisan...but this morning they saw the handwriting on the wall and moved to distance themselves from what is likely to be an epic fail.
More BS everyone knows AARP is a wing of the Dem Pty
AARP to Obama: stop outing us! LOL.
>> “AARP is a nonpartisan organization, and we do not endorse political candidates nor coordinate with any candidate or political party.” <<
Can you say bullshit?
They sure weren’t bipartisan when they were testifying on behalf of Obamacare.
HA! Take your medicine, AARP! You are most definitely partisan and there are many seniors who are aware of just that. This is exactly why you have lost a lot of senior members!
