Nothing displayed Barack Obamas Achilles heel better than when the night's big whiner complained the next day that we don't know the "real" Mitt Romney. The man who can't explain his own Christianity without ifs, ands or buts has a lot nerve even if he is lacking in common sense.
"The man on stage last night, he does not want to be held accountable for the real Mitt Romney's decisions and what he's been saying for the last year," Obama, the man who doesn't want to be accountable for anything, said yesterday after the debate. "And that's because he knows full well that we don't want what he's been selling for the last year."
This is what you have after three and a half years of the presidency; Saul Alinsky finger pointing?
its not possible to overstate the lengths to which Os administration and campaign apparatus go in order to keep secrets from the press and the American people and, mostly, themselves.
In doing so, they have only succeeded in fooling the last on the list, as was displayed so well in the debate against Romney. The cost to the rest of us has been enormous. .
As Henry Asquith, British prime minister, once observed of Britains war-time bureaucracy: "[They keep three sets of figures:] one to mislead the public, another to mislead the Cabinet, and the third to mislead itself."
After three years and a half of demonizing, birtherizing and moralizing, Obama finally did what he ought to have done a long time ago: He debated the issues without a fawning press interposing for him.
And he got whupped.
Being president isnt a birthright for a favorite son; its a privilege.
Because Obama has a number of secrets that are much, much more damaging than the open secret that after three and a half years he can't justify his administration. This is a secret that he seems to be mostly keeping from himself.
Lets take, for example, his secret war in Libya.
Or his secret plan to end our dependence on foreign oil.
Or his secret plan to pay down Americas national debt.
Or his secret plan to create jobs.
Putting aside the secret questions raised about his identity, his religion and his ideology, supporters would be hard pressed to explain Obamas plans in any of the policy areas from energy to war to finance. Or at least explain it in a way that Americans would understand or approve of.
That was the key to Romney's victory the other night.
Those are the secrets that the American people are most interested in. They are the secrets they are most confused about too. And they are the secrets that Obama and company desperately want to keep from the rest of us.
In several well-publicized speeches Obama has tried to explain to the rest of us his plans in these areas of policy.
But they still remain a secret, even, I suppose, to him.
The readings from his teleprompter on those occasions, like his debate performance, have given us more questions than they have answers.
The only salient question, then, for 2012 is this:
Just who is Barack Hussein Obama?
Its a question that should have been asked of him a long time ago.
Perhaps in 2008?
Is he the guy who slammed Hillarys public option on healthcare reform when he was running for president or is he the guy who as president shoved it down our throat?
Is he the guy who opined while he was in the Senate that the experiment in state-building in Iraq wasnt worth it? Or is he the guy who is engaged in wars in Afghanistan and Libya with the aim of building new nation-states as president?
Is he the guy who bragged hed put the coal business out of business or is he the guy who gave billions away to research clean coal technologies?
Is he the kid who wanted to be prime minister of Indonesia or the candidate who wanted to be president of the United States; or is he the president who told us it would be easier to be leader of the Chinese.
I doubt he even knows.
The presidency is not a place where one finds ones self. Instead its a place where one finds out what he is made of.
Obama, it seems, would rather not know.
And thats not really secret anymore.
Thanks for that Mitt.
One little nitpick-he still had the fawning media. Lehrer tried to carry him over the line on more than occasion with prompts when Barry couldn’t frame a coherent reply.
we need an adult in the White HOuse
The media has a lot to answer for after all their work to hide the lack of substance and real personality behind this made for television politician.
“made for television politician”
Well put. I have often thought of O as an actor.
I’m afraid that they’re only going to dig in now that their cover is blown. I don’t know how much more biased they could be without most of them coming right out and saying on live camera “we are leftists and will always and forever support the candidate on the left in any way we can”, because they practically do that now. The older more established ones still try to pretend, but the younger ones (like that despicable bimbo Soledad O’Brien) just don’t care who knows.
Everybody’s talking about using Alinsky’s tactics. Don’t forget that he was a failed loser who died early. True, his tactics are innovative, but what did they ever do for him? Just like all Maoists, the communists are fierce, dedicated foes but utterly useless if you read their tactics and successfully counteract them.
Obama is reduced to saying Romney's a liar. That won't sell for two reasons. One politician accusing another of lying is worthless. Why would I believe he's the liar and not you? Second, Romney can hit back with:
