Brandon Michael Darby(excerpted from a 2010 article by Matthew Vadum)
You've probably never heard of Brandon Darby.
The former community organizer who saved American lives by undermining a left-wing terrorist plot at the 2008 Republican convention used to be a proud member of the radical left.
He called for the overthrow of the U.S. government. He hated cops. He consorted with eco-terrorist tree-spikers, radical feminists and black nationalists. He was approached to rob an armored car and asked to commit arson to fight gentrification. He mouthed politically correct slogans about the Bush administration. Government didn't care about people, and he thought the botched response to Katrina proved it.
When he learned people were suffering in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, he moved there, defying police orders not to enter the stricken city. With $50 he co-founded Common Ground Relief in the home of a former Black Panther. Despite many obstacles, Common Ground alleviated some suffering in the devastated city, especially the hard-hit Ninth Ward. The group gutted flood-damaged houses and provided free health care and meals. In its first three years it accommodated 22,000 volunteers.
Gradually Darby began to question his political beliefs. After initially having rocky relations with the New Orleans police, he came to realize that they were all on the same side because they wanted to help people.
"Everybody else [in Common Ground] remained with this protest, 'fight the power' deal but I started developing relationships with people in the power structure in the city and in different levels of government so my ideas started to really change," he told "This American Life." "I was, 'Why are we wearing masks and protesting? I mean we should go meet with them. I have the mayor's cell phone number. I eat dinner with their families. Why are we acting this way?'"
After years of in-your-face protests and confrontational tactics, Darby rejected the radical left and its culture of political violence. He came to realize that America, for all its faults, wasn't such a bad place after all.

William "Bill" Ayers
When I told Mr. Ayers upon our meeting that I had read his wikipedia page as prep work for our interview, he just laughed. But here it is.
The former Weather Underground leader-slash-"domestic terrorist" gave us his time and his reflections on an almost half-century of trying to change the world.
I watched the trailer. Still have no idea what this movie is about.
A Los Angeles activist for the homeless for years, among a host of other projects, Ted has gone from being a bodyguard for Black Panther leader H. Rap Brown, to being a passionate patriot and advocate for self-improvement in his community.
Here's his wiki... he's a treat.
With us, he discusses his passions, his turnaround, and his dreams of racial reconciliation for America.
. . .
Showman, musician, martial artist, and conservative vlogger, "Zo" has made a name for himself by defying all that was expected, and demanded, of him.
. . .
The highly passionate chief blogger for hillbuzz.org discusses his painful second coming-out... as a converted conservative in Chicago's ultra-liberal Boystown.
Great video. Just sent it to those I know can learn from it and who just might watch it. Thanks for sharing.
Just started watching Ron. Will have to finish later, hope it will stay up. It’s FANTASTIC so far. Thank YOU for the ping.
Very good. Take the time to watch this, it is very informative and easy to watch and understand.
Outstanding video, thanks for the great post.
"Because people think we disagree, but we don't."
He looked like a nice guy in the interview.
I liked the fact that Anna interviews that one guy with no shoes on.
Couldn't figure out who that was though.
One of the best 80 minutes I’ve spent in a long time. Thanks for this Anna!
Lucifer is not MY leader!
When I saw the list of folks you were interviewing for this, my first thought was “Shoot! Another f’n waste of time!” But I (bravely) turned it on, and had to break in here and tell you that the one comment from H. Rap Brown at 0:39.1 is worth the whole thing. That it still goes on today by those same folks in the same place in the same way is an absolute failure of our civilization.
Thank you, thank you, thank you, AnnaZ!
Thank you, RonDog, for posting this and the links.
The only thing I want to see that cretin write is his signature on the assignment sheet for his permanent cell in Leavenworth!
Through the personal journeys of these people, we're reminded that freedom isn't free and requires enormous courage to preserve.
The vileness of the murderous Bill Ayers and his confused and sophomoric musings provides a great counter-point. It was genius to include him.
I've noticed that you haven't been around here for a couple of years, AnnaZ.
Don't know why, but I'm thrilled to see that your great work continues.
Best to you and thanks for producing this wonderful film.
I think you have done a wonderful job. You have incorporated too many points (in a subtle and masterful way) for me to speak to them all. Your editing leads the viewer smoothly and clearly through the evolution of thought of a radical leftist activist to their awakenings to a conservative POV.
Setting that journey against the contrasts of Ayers non-evolution of thought (good grief that man is a slug of an intellect) and Zos early awakening to logic and common sense (making him less a convert and more a continually awakening man of reason) gave the film a very rounded perspective on how various individuals awaken to reason (or never do in Ayers case) and how that reason naturally finds itself more comfortable with a conservative world view and among those who embrace it.
I was also struck with how comfortable your subjects were and how you elicited very honest responses from them relatively free of self-promotion and agenda-promotion. Without being leading or aggressive you illustrated your main points very effectively, IMO, and created a compelling storyline, with beginning, middle and end, into a documentary format.
Isn't that remarkable? That's exactly what I thought.
When I saw the title Revolution, I thought Arab Spring/Libya, and since I didn’t see any other Libya articles, I figured I would just post this interesting post-revolution in Libya complexities ping:
Yeah, I always thought that formal portrait in his Communist Party tee and standing on the American flag in a trash-filled alley was so, like, kewl .....
Anna, if your feature runs 80+ minutes, I think you could call it feature-length now rather than a "two-reeler" or "three-reeler". I noticed two B- and A-list Hollywood efforts among the recent releases that came in at 81-83 minutes only. More that tilted the scales at 90-93 minutes. You may remember Jurassic Park III (my informal working title: Please Eat Tea Leoni!) a few years ago; that one was timecoded at 93 minutes.
Best of luck, Anna, and like they said -- "break a leg!"
Courtesy ping. And good-luck ping and mash-note ping and you-done-good ping.
Gitmo. And the wife he rode in on too.
I just watched both the trailer, and first minute of the “raw sound” version on youtube.
Not sure if it’s too late, but if possible lower the music volume level behind the conversations/interviews, as without headphones, the listener has to strain to hear every word.
e.g., in the trailer, your question to the two women (”have you ever done a 180º shift”) is the only audio to be heard without straining. Contrast the ratio of music to vocal audio there vs other segments.
Also add closed captioning if possible.
Otherwise it LOOKS FANTASTIC, and I look forward to watching the entire thing and forwarding info about it when you want it publicly viewed.
wouldn’t you just love to hang him by those rings in his ears
Also, remember 1998 "March For Justice", as I was the central coordinator - the guy with the long hair pulled back in a pony tail on C-SPAN. I cut that mess off after 9/11/2001 to try and re-enlist - too old.
I remember Ted Hayes being at numerous FR activities after and he was very articulate in his denouncement of liberal/socialist ideologies. Forgot his organization name, but he was pretty much on his own at all those events and as I remember paid his own way. A good man with strong core values. Those were the days of the Free Republic Network created by Bob J that morphed out of the Freeper Action Network (FAN) that I and jolly created. Later came Veterans for Constitutional Restoration (VetsCoR).
Our VetsCoR slideshow of "support the troops" demonstrations during the build up to the Iraq war gave countless folks pride in American values once again. We shipped hundreds/couple thousand? of those discs all around the world and many in-country military couldn't be thankful enough. The best think I ever did, besides my 11 Aviation Navy during the Cold War.
All were good ideas, but couldn't get the funding or interest of the big pundits to promote such. We were novices in the political arena and couldn't get the support. Glad to see Ted Hayes is still doing his thing.
Dear Wifey, please make more coffee!
You have done something that I've only dreamed about. You are now my hero. I love your dedication and all the work you put into this expose. BTW, great editing with background music. My only suggestion is that you edit further to get your point across succinctly. Some interviews were a little verbose and didn't get to the point. Still, a wonderful production.
If you ever want some input or assistance on you next production, please keep me in mind. I've since learned more from my old VetsCoR "With Love and Affection" slideshow on the home page of Free Republic. I've also learned some things from movies/TV about production values, interview editing while maintaining context, editing the entire production, and mostly how to get a point of view across without sounding biased, as you did so well.
Anna, what do you think about doing something regarding the differences between free enterprise versus socialism? This is something you could do and needs to be produced in a simple way that non-political types can understand. Think Jay-Walking where he asks people on the street the most elementary questions and they usually flub the question.
I would be willing to help support such an effort in a small financial way and other ways. Rodger Hunter USN (1975-1986) Ps. Anna, please let me know via Freepmail if you would like to confer on your next project or maybe mine regarding ideologies. You could make a huge impact on those who don't understand the benefits and drawbacks of capitalism versus socialism. It's time to counter our acadamia who are brain-washing our children. I can lead, follow, or just give input, while dealing with data on the computer.
Thank you AnnaZ and RonDog!! Great video!! This is a must watch for all!!
I just watched the trailer! I’ll find my headphones to watch the entire film this afternoon during football!
Ping to watch later.
You need to watch this movie....
Thanks for ping. Downloading to watch entire vid.
Thanks for the ping! Will watch it tonight.
Thank you, Jim.
Thanks for the PING, Jim!
AnnaZ is “on the road” again, I think — but perhaps we can entice her to post here again, when she returns. ;)
WONDERFUL ! !
My route wasn't quite the same, but many many moons ago a young lady with whom I was vey enamoured said that tho she liked me a lot, we couldn't go on together unless I read one of her books.
And she handed me Atlas Shrugged.
Yes, I know all the put-downs about it's being preachy and verbose and yada yada yada, but at the time it was precisely the 2x4 upside the head I needed to break free from the marxist mush at our uni.
She and I drifted apart in time of course, but wherever you are, I thank you from the bottom of my soul, Mary DeVore ! !

Anna, this doc of yours is WONDERFUL !
The Brandon kid, at ~50.30, puts me SO in mind of Whittaker Chambers, knowing that he can't just move to the country and 'put it behind him'.
Maybe you've already done it, but a doc along the same lines, but aimed at knee-jerk lifelong 'cuz my family always was' Dhimms.. there are some of my family still stuck in ILannoy that might just benefit from such an expose'.
Anyway, congrats on this, and thanks much for making it available !
What if Ayers, after all these years, does a turnaround? After all, the ultimate rebellion is to rebel against rebelliousness itself.
