Zander, a husky, was so upset when his owner was hospitalized the pooch tracked him down and paid him a visit.
John Dolan was hospitalized with a skin condition last week. His wife says their dog Zander took it hard. She says the dog sulked and even cried.
Then Zander, seemingly decided he had to be by his owner's bedside. Zander broke out of the Bay Shore home and made his way to the Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center more than 2 miles away.

And when the last scene of all comes, and death takes his master in its embrace and his body is laid away in the cold ground, no matter if all other friends pursue their way, there by the graveside will the noble dog be found, his head between his paws, his eyes sad, but open in alert watchfulness, faithful and true even in death.

It is truly amazing how cats and dogs can find their way to their owner or to their home in this manner.

Awkward writing. I had to read the story a couple of times. Still don't know WHEN this happened.
There was a story like this a few years ago where the owner was sent to a nursing home and the dog (a blue heeler, as I remember) scaled a 6 ft. fence at her daughter’s house and made his way to the nursing home (where he’d never been before) and sat under his owner’s window and barked until the staff came out to get him. Eventually they let the dog move into the nursing home with his owner.
Awwwww,... he looks like my dog Zeus.
The article mentions that the Dolan family rescued Zander from the pound and nursed him back to health after starvation. Obvious that this loving dog adores his family.. brings tears to my eyes. Thanks Kartographer for a heart warming post.

They threw fresh hay for the horses, and took pitchforks to the task of cleaning out the stable. The large man did twice the work of Felix, throwing forks full with ease while humming. The stallion nudged his pockets in search of more carrots.
“The horses love you, sir,” Felix noted.
“Aye, well. We talk about things. We understand each other. The Eternal made all the beasts for man, but just the horse and the dog know it.”
Great story, but I a skeptical. I am very familiar with the area, and it seems unlikely that this really happened.
The idea that the dog “followed its owner’s scent”, seems absurd. Did the owner WALK 2 miles to the hospital? If the owner rode in a car, even the finest Bloodhound couldn’t track his scent, much less a Husky.
That said, if the dog rode in the car when the owner was originally taken to the hospital, I could believe that he might have remembered the route. It looks like only one turn is required to get from the house to the hospital and sense of direction is a strength of sled dogs.

Dogs can be spooky.
I nearly died in a horse accident in 1981 and my Dobermann was the only -honest- witness.
From across the field, he watched from his kennel while the ambulance hauled me away.
My grandmother said he howled, softly and forlornly for the whole 11 days I was in a coma.
[and he never howled before that or after]
She told me she didn’t need anybody to call her and tell I’d woken up because suddenly, he stopped howling, walked from the side of the kennel where he’d witnessed the accident and went to the front of the kennel, which faced our driveway.
She watched him stand there, stock still, nose poked through the wire and wagging his nub for 3 hours.
[I’d woke up, asked for food and was discharged within two hours]
When I got home, he was going berserk with joy and knocked me flat, kissing and licking my face.
They expected me to die in that hospital and truly, I don’t know ‘where I was’ during the coma..I was very close to dead, though.
That dog “knew”.
And the Dobe I have now will wake up and start watching out the window the second I start my journey home from town.
I have a CC camera in the living room that has recorded this endless times and a network camera that I can check on the dogs via iPhone when I’m on longer trips.
Without fail, as soon as I start the return trip, he begins his vigil at the window.
I have no idea how he “knows”.
So it’s just radar love.

Amazing to some people...but my personal belief is that they are Led to their owners because of their love and loyalty. Everything that lives has a spirit, and I believe all spirits are open to The Spirit for guidance. But that’s just me. ;o]
