Ryan Andresen has spent a decade completing the requirements for the coveted Eagle Scout award, and now that he is just about turn 18 -- the cut-off date for attaining the highest honor -- his Boy Scout troop won't approve it because he is gay.
His project, a "tolerance wall," was inspired by the years of hazing he endured in middle school in Moraga, Calif., and later at Boy Scout summer camp, where his nicknames were "Tinkerbell" and "faggot."
"I had I had no idea what gay was at that point," said Andresen, who described hazing that included, among other rituals, having the word "fag" written in charcoal across his chest.
"It was really embarrassing and humiliating," he said. "And I was terrified."

A senior and honors student who hopes to go the University of San Francisco, Ryan joined the Boy Scouts at age 6. "He just liked the outdoors and hiking," said Karen Andresen, 49.
Ryan came out to his parents when he was "around 16," said his mother. In July, he wrote a letter to the troop in response to a bullying incident and "thought he could help," disclosing he was gay.
But just this week the scoutmaster of Troop 212, Rainer Del Valle, refused to give the final signature on Ryan's project, one that he had initially approved, according to the Andresens.

Those are the rules. And if he informed his Scout leadership that he was gay two years ago then they should have removed him then.
I do not believe that a “tolerance wall” meets the minimal standards for an Eagle Scout Project.

I have always believed homosexuality to be a mental disorder...and statements like this confirm it.
As an Assistant Scout Master (ASM), I have a hard time believing any bullying or hazing occurred. ASMs are trained to look for and put a stop to any hazing. Further, all adults on a camp out must attend and pass the training known as Youth Protection Training where the subject of the BSA zero tolerance for abuse of hazing of ANY kind.

I was never in scouting but some of my friends were and got their eagle rank. That looks like a tiny fraction of what my friends did for their projects.
The article says he joined boy scouts when he was 6. I thought you couldn’t join until you are 11. (I was an Eagle Scout myself).

I too have been an Assistant Scout Master and any kind of hazing is required to be stopped.
Someone else mentioned that this boy should have been kicked out for being homosexual...I don’t believe that is a requirement for scouts. The Boy Scouts policy is against leaders being homosexual. I don’t recall anything which prevents boys who think they are homosexual from being a scout. However, I believe that once a scout becomes an Eagle Scout, they automatically, at age 18, become an adult leader, so that could have played into this.
Finally, if all his project was was a “tolerance wall”, I seriously doubt that would pass muster as a serious community project. I know that wimpy of a project would never get approved in my troop or by my council.
The rank of Eagle Scout has to be earned and it isn’t meant to be given to every scout who just “puts in the time.” There has to be real leadership shown and the rank of Eagle can be denied at many points along the path. I know. I have two sons who are Eagle Scouts, and it wasn’t an easy time of just putting in time. They had to demonstrate real leadership.

They’ve lowered the starting age for Scouts. My boys all started at 6 years old as “Tiger Scouts” which changes to the “Bobcat” rank about midway through the year.

For those that don’t know the geography involved, Moraga is a suburb of San Francisco, about 15 miles to the east, on the sunny side of the Berkeley hills. Pretty rich area, but completely infested by San Francisco moonbats that want warm weather in the summer.

I thought “troop” was Girl Scouts and “pack” is Boy Scouts.

On the other hand, if he is making his perversion public he can hardly expect an organization which requires its members to be morally striaght to tolerate his blantant behavior.
The problem here is that society is being pressured to accept homosexuality as an “alternative life style” by Hollywood and political “elites” when in reality it is a perversion. People who pracice it should not be abused but they and the practice should be condemned and it should be treated as what it is - a form of mental illness.

I was in Troop 7 of the Boy Scouts in Cental Florida.
They are probably counting Cub Scouts.
As a Scoutmaster and Assistant Scoutmaster who now helps young men in our troop reach the rank of Eagle, here are my comments:
1) Boys of the age of 6 can be in Cub Scouts and then get to Boy Scouts at the age of 10 1/2.
2) I always tell the young men that there are two ways they can fail to get their Eagle rank during a board of review: if they say they don’t believe in some heavenly power or if they say they are gay. Being gay DOES keep a Scout from being a Boy Scout because of the “morally straight” part of the Scout Oath.
3) Boy Scouts does not despise homosexuals. Rather, it’s all about being appropriate and setting priorities. Just as a young man who sires illegitimate children isn’t morally straight, so is any young man who places his sexuality above all other priorities. In the case of this young man and many others, you must decided whether being a gay activist is more important than being a Boy Scout. You can’t have it both ways. Boys Scouts does not want to be involved in sexuality—to do so is ENTIRELY inappropriate.
On my honor....to keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and MORALLY STRAIGHT. Nuff said.
I too can see the writing on the wall: all of the current attempts to inject the bullying agenda into our public schools is nothing more than a back-door attempt to legislate recognition of the homosexual lifestyle. While the legislative process is slowly being driven by money and progressive candidates, I believe a more insidious approach is being made from a different direction - through our kids. Imagine the point in time being reached where the legal side (law) meets up with the public outcry about “fairness” and “bullying of views” - I fear a tidalwave of cultural emotion to swing the last vestiges of their plan into place: the complete capitualtion to the radical homosexual agenda.

The answer to this one “should” be obvious. Most boys would love coed showers, most girls would hate it. You girls, imagine two boys in your shower room, full of girls, talking to each other, one of them has a major erection. Would this make you uncomfortable? (YES) Would it be okay to have boys in the girls shower room? (NO).
This is the situation I faced in the boys shower room in high school. No girls, but an obvious gay boy. He didn't admit to me that he was gay, so I'm just guessing because of the “major erection” he would get being around naked boys. Now was I uncomfortable? You betcha. If I were allowed in the girls shower room, I would certainly have had the same reaction. THEY WOULD NEVER ALLOW IT!
They wouldn't let boys & girls sleep together (in a two man tent) in the scouts. YET, it's okay to subject and or allow a normal boy to sleep in a two man tent with a gay boy?

Not a project that really shows leadership or other scout traits but where he lives may have something to do with the acceptance of such a project for Eagle.
In my son’s district, several scouts have been rejected for Eagle and it is not unusual. None have gone on to complete it after being rejected. Usually, it is for not taking the requirements seriously enough and/or not completing them all.
I suspect that his being gay has little to do with his rejection. This one smells like more pressure to get the gay agenda forced upon the B.S.A. - again.
The bullying also sounds like either a lack of leadership at his troop level (unlikely) or hypersensitivity from a scout that has an entitlement mentality.

Here is the current sequence for the various Scouting organizations: 1st grade (age 6) - Tiger Cub to Bobcat; 2d grade (age 7) - Cub Scout, Wolf rank; 3d grade (age 8) - Cub Scout, Bear rank; 4th grade (age 9) - Webelos, 1st year; 5th grade (age 10) - Webelos, 2d year, transition to Boy Scouts at age 10-1/2, usually in the spring of the 4th grade; Boy Scouts, up to age 18, ranks Tenderfoot to Eagle; Venture Scouting (coed), outdoor adventure program, ages 14-21; Explorers (coed), career exploration (aka Learning for Life) for ages 14-21.
As to this person’s “Eagle project”, I agree with those who think it is woefully short of the project requirements I knew when I was a Scoutmaster and Troop Committee Chair. It never should have been approved by the troop or the District Advancement committee. The primary reason it does not appear to meet the requirements is the lack of a leadership element. He did this pretty much on his own.
