Obama Has Right Plan For Economy, Says U.S. HHS Secretary Sebelius

President Barack Obama wants to “rebuild the economy from the middle class out,” U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius told a group of the president's supporters on Friday.

Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney has a much different vision, she added.

“I think the Romney-Ryan candidates believe very strongly that it's a 'you're-on-your-own-ship society,” she said. “They want to go back to the policies that almost crashed this economy.”

Sebelius, who was speaking in a “personal capacity” on Friday, according to the campaign, visited the city to meet with volunteers at the local Obama for America campaign office. She gave a 20-minute speech, detailing the contrasts in the presidential race as she sees it.

“There's no question we have some very dramatic differences in the policies of the candidates,” Sebelius told the crowd of more than 50 people.

Thirty-nine days before Election Day, Sebelius encouraged supporters to spread the message of how important their vote is and to get others who share that message to the polls on Nov. 6.

Sebelius said she believes Obama and Romney couldn't be more opposed when it comes to their views on the economy.

“The president really starts with an ownership society,” she said. “It's about everybody having a fair shake, everybody having a shot and everybody playing by the same rules.”

Sebelius said 5.1 million private-sector jobs have been created since Obama took office, citing that as a reason to buy into his economic plan.

“It's not where we want to be, but certainly not where we used to be,” she said.

A former governor of Kansas, Sebelius said she also believes in concentrating on education as a way to improve the economy.

“Education has to be one of the fundamental issues we pay attention to,” she said.

The president's plan to increase standards on math and science and focus on early childhood education will also be key to stimulating the economy, she added.

Sebelius said Romney's record as governor of Massachusetts is very different.

“As governor of Massachusetts, by his second year, he had some of the largest cuts in education throughout the state done anywhere in the country,” Sebelius said.

Sebelius said cuts to education are “short-term ways to save budget dollars, but a long-term and serious detrimental mistake.”

Though the campaign said she was not speaking in her official capacity as HHS secretary, Sebelius discussed the difference in health care policy between the two candidates.

“They have very, very different views,” she said.

Sebelius echoed the president's plan to fix the rising cost of health care through reforms included in the Affordable Care Act. She paid particular attention to the changes in Medicare and Medicaid, and their effects on women.

“We have more work to do and we're eager to work with Congress to do that,” she said. “We have strategies that improve care, lower costs and make sure benefits are in place.”

Calling Romney and Ryan “the other team,” Sebelius said the Republicans' plans for health care involves a voucher system that in essence turns people over to insurance companies.

Sebelius said Romney's plan would force more costs upon people in need of health care.

“That, to me, is not the way we make sure we have a healthier generation,” she said.

As one of the dozens in attendance on Friday, campaign supporter Alison Tucker said she liked what she heard from Sebelius about the differences between both candidates.

“It's obvious, and scary,” she said. “It's scary to think we could go back in years.”

The event also saw its share of protesters.

Portsmouth resident Warren Goddard stood outside the campaign with a sign and a message to Obama supporters.

“The Department of Health and Human Service's recent rulemaking mandating that church-sponsored and affiliated enterprises that provide health insurance must also provide contraception coverage audaciously defies the religious liberty predicate that this nation is founded upon,” Goddard said in a written statement. “It furthermore threatens our long-held belief that all Americans may worship and serve God free from governmental interference.”

Goddard said it's also a direct violation of the First Amendment.

Obama wants to “rebuild the economy from the middle class out,”

Where does this come from? I have never heard the phrase said, especially when talking economics. Never.

Is it a brand new theory?

Is it something they are making up?

Is there any data to show that it works?

How is it supposed to work?

Why isn't the media asking for details?

Ah, yes... that return to those "evil" policies the pre-date this POS by 280 years, and made the country the most powerful economic, political, and military power in the world. Other than that...

Shut up, Nurse Ratched. One of the best results of an Obama defeat will be never seeing your satanic mug again. And take Big Sis with you.

Obama’s freak show is heavy on homosexuals, which is even more disturbing than the circus troop appointed by Clinton.

Former Catholic Kathleen Sebelius spoke before a small group of Obamabots and spouted her usual line of nonsensical Obamabull.

That's because it's complete and utter crap. The intellectual equivalent of the "hope and change" thingy the jug-eared a$$ clown trotted out in 2008. Your instincts are correct; this is nothing more than meaningless tripe, dispensed by an ignoramus convinced of his own brilliance, despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary.

Hey Kathy! Why did your “messiah” wait four years to come up with his “right plan”?

Really? Healthcare for illegal immigrants that crowds out US citizens. Creating a massive welfare state with millions on the dole (food stamps, disability, free cell phones, part time jobs). This is the vision of Greece, not the once free USA.

I think Romney has to rebut the solidifying narrative that somehow it is what Bush did that caused the real estate market to crash. He needs to explain how the root cause is a low real interest rate environment coupled with a government abetted by community activists like Obama who were abetting the government to reduce the requirements for owning a home especially for minorities and the poor.

KATIE. Isn’t that what the FOREIGNER has been doing for the past four years. I know you SOCIALIST DEMOCRATS are all about diversity, but the Health Department commenting on economic policy. I guess when the policy is so bad, your comments can’t do much more damage.

Yes

Was that a rhetorical question?

The bigger question is where do they get the idea that the government BUILDS anything? The government should do nothing other than to create the climate whereby the private sector can build a strong economy.

Its all commie bullshit, white wash and perfume being sprayed from fire sprinklers to cover up the pervasive stench of creeping socialism married to the Muslim Brotherhood and THEIR agenda.

I was really hoping that Romney was going to point this out last week. The Community Reinvestment Act (I think it was called) was largely responsible for the debt crisis caused by all the lousy mortgages that all came crashing down at the same time. Dodd/Frank, Fannie (no relation to Frank) and Freddie all created the need for a massive financial bailout of the banks. This has all been lost to the “blame it on Wall Street” mantra that we keep hearing.

More than likely...we should see all the different answers we would get from Democrats, it would be just as incoherent as the multiple reasons given for the purpose of the Occupy Wall Street movement, only coming from elected Democrats.
