Progressive opinions on Barack Obamas first term are as conflicted as his record. These differences are a sign of a diverse and spirited left, and we welcome continued debate in our pages about the presidents record and policies. But that discussion should not obscure what is at stake in this election. A victory for Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan in November would validate the reactionary extremists who have captured the Republican Party. It would represent the triumph of social Darwinism, the religious right, corporate power and the big money donors who thrive in a new Gilded Age of inequality. It would strike a devastating blow to progressive values and movements, locking us in rear-guard actions on a range of issuesfrom the rights of women, minorities, immigrants and LGBT people to the preservation of social insurance programs and a progressive tax structure. Inside the Democratic Party, Obamas defeat would embolden the Blue Dogs and New Dems, who have greased the partys slide to the right. Whatever disappointments we have with Obamas first termand there are manyprogressives have a profound interest in the popular rejection of the Romney/Ryan ticket.

The Nation Editorial staff should stick to throwing parties for Black Panthers, and leave the work of governing to adults...
What “president”?
Delusional. I love the worry over the “progressive tax structure.” Low income earners in this country don’t pay anything, but that isn’t enough for the Nation.

i really think that the administration of TOTUS has been an abject failure.
like talking to an empty chair.
I can even talk coherently without notes or a teleprompter, when i know what i am talking about. had a church for many years.
my major points were not “ums” and “ahs”.
if you have to reach into the backside of your brain and only find “ums” and “ahs”, you are not real.
leads me to believe we have an dependent pos that has no moral compass.
i can always tell anyone exactly what i believe without hemming around about it.
immitation president, a mannequin, a puppet, a fool.

Pass it on ;)
Bill Ayers is the head of The Nation’s Editorial Board.
Not only that, I think they are going to blow a brain gasket when The One fails to be re-elected. Never doubt this: there are armed commies among the Progressive Left. Who do you think killed the Kennedys? Who do you think attempted assassinations against Reagan and Bush? They are out there. And they are going to bust a brain gear when 0bama loses.
P!ss be upon TN. I support and have defended the Constitution, which makes me a validated, reactionary extremist, in good company with our Framers.
Oh, you noticed that?
Look, how can we preserve Prog mo-mentum if people like you keep pointing out fundamental cognitive disconnects in our Prog-Gram?
Malcontent! Agitator! Right-wing troll! Enemy of Ingsoc! Traitor!
