HOLLYWOOD, October 5, 2012, (LifeSiteNews.com) Never before have there been so many homosexual characters portrayed on broadcast and cable television, according to the latest report from the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD).
The 17th annual Where We Are On TV report found that LGBT characters account for 4.4 percent of scripted series regulars in the 2012-2013 broadcast television schedule. This is up from 2.9 percent in 2011, 3.9 percent in 2010, 3 percent in 2009, 2.6 percent in 2008 and 1.1 percent in 2007.
GLAAD’s study reviewed 97 scripted television programs scheduled to air this upcoming season on broadcast networks, and counted a total of 701 series regular characters. Thirty-one of those are lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT), as are an additional 19 recurring characters.
ABC has the highest amount with 5.2 percent (10 out of 194) of their regular characters identifying as LGBT. After leading last year, Fox is in second with six LGBT characters out of 118 total series regulars (5.1 percent). However, Fox’s Glee is the broadcast television show with the most number of regular and recurring homosexual characters, with six.
True Blood was the cable TV show with the highest number of homosexual characters.
GLAAD also said that CBS improved and will feature four LGBT characters out of 142 series regulars (2.8 percent), up from 0.7 percent last year. The increase came after GLAAD lambasted the network in a 2010 report, prompting CBS President Nina Tassler to apologize and pledge to do better.
On mainstream cable networks, the number of announced LGBT series regular characters has also increased to 35, and will also feature 26 recurring characters for a total of 61 LGBT characters.
This year Showtime features the greatest number of LGBT characters on cable with 12, seven of which are series regulars. Once again this year True Blood is the show on cable television with the most number of LGBT characters, with six of them.
It is vital for networks to weave complex and diverse storylines of LGBT people in the different programs they air, said GLAAD President Herndon Graddick. When young LGBT people see loving couples like Callie and Arizona on Greys Anatomy or Degrassis confident transgender high school student Adam Torres, they find characters they can look up to and slowly start building the courage to live authentically.
It’s called social engineering.
Smart lady; you got the point I got too carried away to make.
Weren't they? Like a nice warm fragrant bath for our visual brain cells.
The only times the Networks and I cross paths is for the NFL.The ONLY time.
Truth is, gays were far more interesting when they were in the closet. Today they come across as just a bunch of hysterical nags trying to get mainstreamed in a world where they will always be, by definition, deviants.
What I don’t get is this:
Kinsey did his groundbreaking studies. Like it or not, in those times there was basically no one asking yur average housewife “Have you ever had an orgasm?”
His published results, though, about ten percent of the population having homosexual tendencies or fantasies have been overturned time and time again since then.
The real figures end up being in the range 1.5%-4%, in that range.
So HOW THE HELL does 1.5-4 percent of the population manage to get the whole country into such a huge turmoil over something that is basically their own damn business and none of mine?
I just wish they would do whatever the hell it is they want to do and STFU about it!
They will NEVER convince me it is normal or natural! Which is EXACTLY what they are trying to do now and use the law against us!
“I havent ever regretted it, but now I am thinking it might be worth the cost to see Øbamatollahs concession speech...”
That is what a good bar is for. Don’t worry, if you don’t drink just have an iced tea.
I recently joined my local tea party and one of the great things they do is get togethers to watch the debates and such. Looking forward to that.
“that’s the one thing I hate about Santa Clara. Too many damn vampires”.
Remember, its "equality and free speech for me, but not for thee".
Don’t worry, the “right” shows will be mandatory soon.
“I cannot stand men who talk like elementary school girls!”
You do not want to go to Minnesota then. That is what you will find there, and they act like elementary school girls as well. Turns out Glee and Ellen are extremely popular out there.
I lived in Minnesota and was completely outside of the local culture the whole time. Minnesota - where women are bitches and so are men.
It’s good to be back in Texas!
4.4%? I’d be willing to wager that it’s higher than that. In the past 4 years, I have made a point to cut, drop or not watch any program that pushes, promotes or even mentions homosexuality and its agenda.
I’ve been reduced to Retro-TV, college sports and DVDs.
which is why I never let my kids or even have my TV on those channels.
It’s sick and to let people think these are just go lucky happy people is stunning.
I want to know why we see warnings for SEX, MATURE CONTENT, STRONG LANGUAGE, but not for HOMOSEXUALITY.
The worst thing I think is to see homosexuals on the TV but then acting as if they’re just normal folk is sick.
strong language is a warning but homosexuality is not?!!
can’t even watch HGTV now because they nearly always have two men acting as if they’re a normal couple and why is it that these fruits at like teenage girls.
Actually thinking about it nearly all turd poking men have been immature , childish and attention seeking.
All I have met have had father men issues when growing up, just as the strap on women crowd who seem to have had issues growing up and all seem bitterm, angry and very twisted
You are soooo right. If the couples aren’t gay they are all mixed-race. I watched all of the home improvement shows one Saturday and every single one had a mixed-race or gay couple.
