Mitt Romney thrills throngs of admirers in Apopka (Florida tonight)
Orlando Sentinel ^ | 10/6/2012 | Scott Powers

The Romney campaign said it took in RSVPs from 14,000 to 15,000 people to the event, though it did not know how many actually came. Apopka Chief Administrative Officer Richard Anderson said earlier the amphitheater had a capacity of about 10,000. The place was overflowing, and most of the last few thousand people, at least, who arrived had to fight through crawling traffic. Many people abandoned their cars along the roads' grassy shoulders and walked a mile or more to get to the park.

But these people were happy to be there together, and having watched Romney's debate performance last week, they were feeling like winners. They thundered a welcome when Romney and his wife, Ann, took stage, then cheered and roared repeatedly through his 23-minute speech.

They and Romney caught a major break when vicious evening thunderstorms rolled over menacingly but passed Apopka by, leaving just a few sprinkled drops.

Romney began by describing the debate as a clear expression of his and Obama's visions for America. But he also portrayed the debate as an opportunity for him to ask questions of Obama that others could or would not on topics ranging from why the health-care law was a bigger priority than jobs and why he was canceling drilling permits on federal lands.

Among new details, Romney promised to double the number of drilling permits approved on federal lands, to open Alaska to more oil exploration and to "build that pipeline from Canada if I have to do it myself."

Encouraging news. I hope he’s still practicing hard for the next debate. We can expect a hyper-aggressive Obama trying to hype up a “randomly selected” town hall crowd with class warfare. Romney just has to make sure he remembers that the people in the room don’t matter. The people watching T.V. do. Make sure you present a clear choice. Go after Obama with numbers.

And facts. Numbers and facts. Stay cool and smiling while carpet bombing him with numbers and facts. He’ll be easy prey because he’s sure to come on too strong.

IIRC, the next debate is on foreign policy. The third debate will be the touchy-feely townhall one.

Thanks for posting the pics of this event.

Do you suppose these folks were bused in? Or, that they're asking for Free Stuff?

Have read several articles on Romney's debate prep. It was grueling for Denver and I am certain will be just as grueling when he sequesters his team for the upcoming joust.

Here's what Rob Portman said about the last debate prep (in Vermont)...

Portman says Romney’s willingness to fully commit to the prep was striking. Day after day, he’d get up early, exercise, and then join the team for hours of work. Advisers certainly played a role, but according to Portman, it was the candidate who drove his advisers. Even when he had a busy week of campaigning, Romney would always find time to study or hold a brief mock debate. “It was all him,” Portman tells me. “Honestly, I’ve spent a lot of time with Mitt Romney for the past month or so, and what I saw on stage is who he is. He’s smart, he’s articulate, and he’s got a big heart.”

I don’t think bringing Palin into the mix at this point is at all wise. I love her, but that would do more harm than good.

I like Sarah a lot. She could have thown her hat in the ring if she had chosen to.

I’m pretty sure she has endorsed Mitt, has she not? If she wants to campaign for him she can surely do so.

Just sayin’.
