Expectations run high for Biden-Ryan debate
Washington Post ^ | October 6, 2012 | Felicia Sonmez

Vice President Biden, a man with nearly four decades of experience in politics, has not been taking lightly his preparations for his debate against Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), holding practice sessions and perusing briefing books in recent months.

Now, in the wake of President Obama’s widely panned performance last week in his first debate against Mitt Romney, the stakes for Biden are suddenly higher than ever. In the Oct. 11 vice-presidential debate he must not only avoid making any gaffes but also try to puncture his Republican opponent’s arguments on taxes, entitlement reform and deficit reduction, something Obama was criticized for failing to do last week.

One point on which both sides appear to agree is that Biden is likely to be more aggressive in his face-off against Ryan than Obama was debating Romney.

Speaking with reporters last Thursday before a Cedar Rapids, Iowa, rally at which he sharply criticized both Romney and Ryan, Biden previewed the debate by noting that he’s been “studying up on Congressman Ryan’s positions on the issues.”

“I just want to make sure that when I say these things, I don’t have the congressman — ‘No no no, I don’t have that position,’ or, ‘That’s not the governor’s position,’ ” Biden said. “So, it’s mainly getting the factual predicates for everything that — not everything, but the key issues on which Governor Romney has spoken and Congressman Ryan has.”

Ryan, for his part, said that he believes Biden will be an aggressive opponent. “I expect the vice president to come at me like a cannonball,” Ryan told the conservative Weekly Standard Thursday night. “He’ll be in full attack mode, and I don’t think he’ll let any inconvenient facts get in his way.”

It’s going to be a slaughter. They might as well set up cameras in front of a butchers window while a cow is laid out cut up with a band saw.

When Biden was made into mincemeat four years ago, the press covered for him.

Peruse - a four letter word Biden knows well. "What is Peru's GDP?"

No, it won’t. Just ask Palin. Ryan better not be overconfident.

I look for Biden to be throwing out all kinds of “statistics” like percentages of this and $trillions of that...stuff you can’t confirm or deny for the audience in a live debate with much accuracy.

He’ll think he’s making himself look like he’s gotten every memo that’s gone out and he does have to pick up the slack for Obama but it’ll all be bullsh*t ‘cause that’s all they’ve got.

“I know Congressman Ryan considers the vice president a friend.”...First, and worst, mistake.

If Biden’s handlers want him to make a good impression, they should not have him pull up to the debate in his normal security caravan - the short yellow school bus.

They should also ensure that the idiot removes his self-protective helmet before going on stage.

My personal thoughts are that when the “Hair Club for Men” technician put in his plugs, they bored out the plug-hole a little too deeply.

I am confident it’s going to be a slaughter because I am confident that Ryan will not be over-confident. Ryan will prepare properly. A properly prepared Ryan can’t lose to Biden. Unless Biden pulls out a gun and shoots Ryan. But even then, Biden doesn’t really win the debate, does he?

That’s exactly what he did to Palin. He threw so much crap at her, she looked out of her league even though a lot of the stuff Biden said was in accurate.

Biden will not disappoint the democrats. He’ll throw out lots of unverifiable statistics and rhetoric.

Just what I was thinking. Biden lied over and over again with Sarah and the press repeated those lies up until they were finally proven wrong. But by then most people had only heard the lies.

I also think Biden will go after Ryan as a Romney surrogate, bring up the media-touted 47% and accuse Romney/Ryan of lying about their plan, yada yada.

Be careful, Paul. It's going to be a minefield where you have to call the old kook out on his lies but stay respectful, bring up their record but give people hope. Don't let evil triumph like they did four years ago.

I really don't think it will be a slaughter. Biden is a complete liar. In fact, he just completely makes stuff up, and he won't back down like Obama did.

Ryan is very quick on his feet, but it won't be easy debating someone that has no off button and won't let the facts get in the way.

But Ryan has vast experience debating these people. He’s been in the House for 12 years. That’s a long time for somebody of his high intelligence to understand what it takes to debate the Liars on the other side.
