Obama Advisors Make Romney Sound Like Reagan
Washington Times ^ | 08 Oct 2012 | McGlaughlin and Crabtree

President Obama’s re-election campaign on Monday launched a pre-emptive strike ahead of Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s planned foreign policy address, arguing that Mr. Romney has failed the the commander-in-chief test on the global stage — in part by staking out positions to the right of former President George W. Bush. The Obama camp released a new television advertisement and issued a memo on Monday criticizing Mr. Romney’s bumpy overseas trip this summer as well as his response to the assaults on the U.S. diplomatic post in Libya — highlighting how a national security adviser to GOP Sen. John McCain’s 2008 presidential campaign called Mr. Romney’s stance on Libya the “the worst possible reaction.” Mr. Romney is set to give a broad-scale attack on Mr. Obama’s handling of foreign policy and national security issues in a speech this morning here at the Virginia Military Institute. In the memo, two former top Obama national security advisers — Michele Flournoy and Colin Kahl — say the former Massachusetts governor’s “latest effort to reboot and re-set the Romney foreign policy” cannot hide the fact that he pushes positions “outside of the mainstream and often to the right of even George W. Bush.”

I decided a while back that Romney was worth my vote, by his virtue of simply NOT being Obama. But if Obama's own team wants to make Romney sound like Reagan redux, I'm in. In fact, I think their doing so only serves to make Obama look even more like Carter redux.

Another Reagan would be nice. Willard’s not Reagan, but he’s the One either.

Romney has failed as commander-in-chief ?

Didn't know Mitt Romney was running as the incumbent.

The high point of Romney’s foreign trip was his being endorsed by Lech Walesa, which got no play in the American media. Instead they harped on gripes by easily-offended British twits and complaints from Palestinians.

Mitt is no Reagan. And the funny thing is that to the Dems calling him so is a real smear, while for the undecided voter it may well be an endorsement.

In fact, I think their doing so only serves to make Obama look even more like Carter redux.

Bingo!

Mitt should bring the bust of Churchill out with him to the dais and say it will be back in the Oval Office in January.

Since people are not happy with Bush’s foreign policy, differentiating Romney from Bush is probably not a wise move by the Obama campaign. Their best move would be to compare Bush and Romney, not contrast them. I doubt anyone thinks Bush’s record was too far right. The going opinion is that he evolved into a nation-building president, which is about as far from right wing as you get.

(Note: I am not endorsing this view, but simply observing settled public opinion on the Bush record)

After Obama has allowed a U.S. Ambassador to be murdered, anything that Mitt Romney can do in foreign policy smells
like roses to me.

Plus Romney can fearlessly name the capital of Israel. That bodes well for his future foreign policy.
