Posted on 10/08/2012 10:18:11 AM PDT by RochesterNYconservative
We all love Grama.
But its time to take away the keys.
Its not about how many years shes been driving. Its not about all the great things shes done. Its not about how much you appreciate and respect her.
Its not about yesterday, its about today.
Its about common sense and realizing that this cant go on. She cant do today what she did yesterday, and the passage of time has done what the passage of time does.
She wont want to give them up. She will be certain that shes still capable. She might even fight you over it. And it might lead to some temporary hard feelings.
But its the right thing to do.
Its time to take away Gramas keys.
For most middle-aged people across Monroe County, Louise Slaughter has been in Congress all of their adult lives. There are grandparents today who were newlyweds when she was first elected. There are local men who have been born, grown, fought in war and died, all since Louise Slaughter went to Washington. For a generation, this regions voice and face in Washington have been Louise Slaughter.
Different people will see the effectiveness of those years differently. Those who view insider status and being a spokesperson for partisan cause as important will note success. Those who think legislative accomplishment and local benefit are important will find less success.
She has been a champion of Americas liberal and feminist causes, and earned praise or criticism as a result.
She has had a long and interesting career.

TERM LIMITS! That would get most of the elderly and befuddled out. Anybody remember Strom Thurmond? Plus, according to friends in SC, the older he got, the bigger a problem he had with - er, wandering hands. Women didn’t want to be in the same elevator with him.
People get very loyal to their legislator “de toda la vida,” as the Spanish would say, meaning “as long as I can remember.” So there needs to be a mandatory term limit for all offices.
I caught her on C-span a few times earlier this year during some committee meetings..either Rules or Ways and Means. She’s ranking member on several key subcommittees..While I detest her politics, she seemed very alert and spry..spoke well...compared to most of the female members of the black caucus...she’s an Einstein..
Who spells Grandma this way — affirmative action “journalists”?
Bravo for Bob and he is spot on right!!
My Father’s drivers license expired when he was around 88. He was no longer driving but in order to keep insurance on his car it was necessary to keep his DL.
My Sister and I took him to the Florida license office to get his license renewed. The only test they gave him was the eye test. He was so unsteady on his feet that my Sister stood beside him and held the back of his belt to keep him steady.
He passed the eye test and got his license.
Nice sentiment, but if “Granma” is a self-sustaining adult you can’t simply take her keys away from her. If she’s a danger, her license to drive has got to be revoked by the authority that issued it.
She has a ZERO rating from an organization trying to stop illegal aliens from getting bennies from the government. She is an illegal alien’s best friend.
He is as caucasion as it gets...he is Rochester’s Rush Limbaugh, but he is far from getting it right on many occasions. He was the one who Glenn Beck fired as a vacation replacement for his radio show for unknown reasons.
This article has nothing to do with older people driving...it is more about Ms. Slaughter’s uselessness as a congresswoman...one who has been one for over 20 years with little accomplishment behind it. Also, she tends to be interested in women’s issues (liberal women’s issues, that is).
OK, let’s get rid of people who have lived long enough to live through history and how that relates to what is happening today.
When are people useless, at what age? Let’s decide and get rid of these people - maybe mass confinement or whatever - don’t give them water and they will be gone in 3-4 days.
If anyone wants to get rid of me at my age of 80, put me in a “home” or worse, be prepared for a fight - my tactical vest is loaded and so is my gun. My vision is 20/20 and my brain works extremely well which it always has.
Voters will decide about Louise based on her performance whether she is 21 or 90.
MOST Gramma’s are more lucid and ANYONE that listens to RAP music..
RAP music is not music, its not even poetry.. or prose..
Its Propaganda or worse Agitprop..
Amazing how stupid MOST American children have become..
Not slow or stunted or even ignorant but STUPID..
12 years of public school has destroyed their desire to learn anything..
Its not an accident either.. it was done with forethought and amazing connivance..
By teachers Unions and democrat politicians and not a few republicans..
Should be a Capital crime.. the dumbing down of America.. ON PURPOSE..
The punishment...... HANGING!... (after being water boarded for names of other criminals)..
But she acts totally confused and befuddled. That is why she does few interviews and will not do town hall meetings and never does press conferences.
Performance? She has done abhorantly as congresswoman. The only reason she gets re elected is gerrymandering and the fact the idiots in her district would vote for Judas over Jesus as long as (D) comes after the name.

Not term limits but a maximium age. How about we set 80 as the oldest you can be to run.
This is not about Grandmother’s...this is about one of the most liberal, nutty, out of touch congresswoman in western NY...who happens to be an octogenarian.
Alas, I neglected to read the entire article, or I would have known that. I’m a bad dog, and shall have no biscuit today. <:-(
Breathtaking ignorance of economics or
She's a shameless hack
Seeing how she has nothing to say as gas is approaching $6 in CA and theres a dem-hole in the Whitehouse, that proves shes a shameless partisan hack.
But Ill wager shes also economically ignorant as well.
You wouldn't like her politics if she was 21, and you won't vote for her which is the thing to do. If the others in her district are happy with her, they will vote her back in.
I think you’re going to run into discrimination laws then.
An incompetent 80 yr old is not likely to be elected for the first time (or if he or she is, that means this person is actually capable of the job and was capable of campaigning). Most of the 80+ or even 70+ elected reps are people who have had multiple terms.
Limit them all to two terms in whatever position it is, and the problem would be solved.
I thought this article was about Pelosi.
Her district was gerrymandered. It was formerly the district of respected conservative congressman Barber Conable. It is a disgrace it went from Conable to this clown.
Ronald Reagan was 69 when voted in as President. He was re-elected when he was 72. Gee, he was old, must not have accomplished anything at those ages. /s
They are obsessed with abortion and birth control. I would not call that women’s issues as much as watermelon population control and eugenics issues.
Some ditzy women fall for the hate-bait angle every time; especially black women whose race was directly targeted for extermination by Planned Parenthood’s founders.
With leftist agenda, the “us versus them” usually means “me against myself.”
Nope, only the (D) or (R) is relevant, most Congressman are elected on a straight ticket vote.
Are you comparing Ronald Reagan to that moonbat Louise Slaughter, who opposed everything Reagan stood for?
“Nope, only the (D) or (R) is relevant, most Congressman are elected on a straight ticket vote.”
If Democrat voters seriously wanted to reject her, they wouldn’t vote straight ticket so they could dump her. If they are voting straight ticket, then they accept her.
Not a fan of Lonsberry, just don’t like the messenger. This column is weak, there is so much low hanging fruit to pick in the form of her record. Wasn’t Lady Slaughter ready to shred the Constitution to deem Obamacare passed? There’s also a You Tube video out there where Paul Ryan shreds her to pieces in a hearing. Hope Maggie defeats her.
Oddly, she looks a little Gerald Ford
I mean the way he looks now.
You are the one who posted this thread about her age, I didn't. If you were a little more on the ball, you would know I posted about Reagan because he was “old” when he was elected and re-elected. That is comparing ages, not policy and if you couldn't figure that out, perhaps you need an IQ test. I also notice you are a newbie to this forum.
Slaughter was first elected to Congress in 1986. Her ACU ratings over the years ranged from a high of 17 in 1990 to absolute zero in 1994, 2001, 2002, 2004, 2007, 2008 and 2010 with a 25 year lifetime overall average of 4.99. The only other year she had a double digit rating was her first year in 1987 at a 10. She has been the direct beneficiary of gerrymandering of her district from the suburbs to include the inner city of Rochester as the overall population of New York State decreased because of residents fleeing the state due to the stratospheric taxes enacted by a RAT-dominated state legislature(to support their downstate liberal base in New York City).
My Mom will be 90 next month. She is healthy and sharp as a tac. She drives all over the place and has a better social life than we do. She also still cleans her own house and works in the yard.
Julia Carson was illiterate AND senile and hung on to her Congress seat here in Indianapolis until she died. Then they elected her grandson who’s even worse - a liberal AND a Muzzie.
Marcella, Reagan was vigorous and agile in his later 70s. Slaughter is not agile nor quick, even 10 years ago. In fact, she had to be arm twisted into debating Maggie Brooks. It is not so much I am a newbie, or that I posted an article by Bob Lonsberry about the age issue, is that you did not even read a word of the article. If you saw how she looks and sounds on C-Span you would be profusely apologizing and kowtowing to me like Obama to a third world dictator!
As Reagan would say, “There you go again...” making assumptions as to what I did or didn't do.
I always read an entire article before commenting. If you weren't a newbie, you would know that about me. Our conversation is done - you aren't going to vote for a Democrat and the other voters will vote as they wish - end of story.
Louise was one of the few congresswoman who absolutely refused to hold town hall meetings on Obamacare. I have very little respect for her, but the fact she is not accountable for her votes and is unwilling to face the public and defend her votes, shows me she is a slimeball. She is also one of the proponents of the Fairness Doctrine, which will be damaging to conservative talk radio.
You seem very defensive and on the ropes here. I will cut you some slack. I am not a true newbie, by the way, as I have read articles on this site for years before I became a member. End of story...game set and match ME!
[ This is not about Grandmothers...this is about one of the most liberal, nutty, out of touch congresswoman in western NY...who happens to be an octogenarian. ]
Jeese Louise grasshopper.. I’m almost seventy and my good friend is ninety and in better health than I am..
ALL DEMOCRATS should be retired not just the old ones..
The entire party has been and is an insult to this Republic.. from the beginning..
The very meaning of democrat is a flawed concept..
No democracy has even yet been democratic or ever will be..
Democracy is a lie.. Democracy is Mob Rule by mobsters..
Democracy is the political disease with a symptom of socialism..
ALL DEMOCRATS should be retired or HUNG..
Democracy is indispensable to socialism. The goal of socialism is communism. -V.I. Lenin
The meaning of peace is the absence of opposition to socialism .-Karl Marx
The Founders put it in there because they know that with age comes wisdom. They never expected, however, to see octogenarians plus still serving. In those days, people that old had a coveted position.
By the fire place!
And you've probably heard the expression, "There's no fool like and old fool!"
Sorry. Being a leftist lunatic hatemonger is not an issue of age.
Well, that may be true...I think the downward limit is good, and we have that for a number of things (drivers licenses, for example).
But nobody who started running for office at an advanced age would be elected - unless they happened to be really, truly worthy, and in that case there’s no problem.
The only ones who take their seats in the legislature in their late 70s or 80s (or even 90s) are people who have had way too many terms. Limit EVERYBODY to two terms and there’s no problem.
There are many reasons other than old age for which we should impose term limits. By the 3rd or 4th term, any legislator is going to be so corrupt and bought out by different groups that he or she has ceased to perform any useful function, and in fact that’s one of the reason that they all retire (eventually) as millionaires. In addition, they have stopped younger and better talent from coming up behind them.
2 terms, no more.
83 is old, but corrine brown, my rep, behaves as if oxygen supply is cut off for a reasonable thought.
You could say my sister is a cougar, she’s 80 and her boyfriend is 69......LOL
“You could say my sister is a cougar, shes 80 and her boyfriend is 69......LOL”
Being old and thinking/acting old are two different things. Your sister is living her life, not sitting knitting all the time and giving up. Good for her.
She is in better health than her boyfriend....He’s a nice guy, a legal Tex Mex...plays drums in a band, sells stuff at flea markets....yep, they haven’t slowed down...sister also had bi-lateral hip replacements. Kept her down for a couple of months in healing of the second hip replacement, breezed through the 1st one...
I was born and raised in Rochester, but haven’t lived there since 1972. I spent the summer of 2011 there because my sister was in hospice care, and it was then that I first discovered Bob Lonsberry’s radio show. I was delighted to find out that his program is replayed on a Syracuse station in the afternoon, so when I’m out and about, I get to listen to him. He’s excellent.
There are a lot of good representatives and senators though who haved served more than two terms:
Paul Ryan, Michele Bachmann, Jeff Sessions, Jim DeMint, John Barasso, Joe Wilson, Mike Pence, and Marsh Blackburn, to name a few.
We’d lose those stalwarts. And non-elected staffers would have far more power than they do today.
Representatives (because they have such short terms) could probably have more - it would have to be four (eight years) in order to keep the staggered effect.
But then they should simply go on to something else. Run for governor, for Senator, or just go back to whatever they did before becoming politicians.
Pretty funny nickname. Where did it come from?
For a relatively young woman (she is 46), she dresses like a dowdy old lday.
