Darden tests limiting worker hours as health-care changes loom (Red Lobster/Olive Garden/LongHorn)
The Orlando Sentinel ^ | October 7, 2012 | Sandra Pedicini

Posted on 10/08/2012 10:58:57 AM PDT by Sam's Army

In an experiment apparently aimed at keeping down the cost of health-care reform, Orlando-based Darden Restaurants has stopped offering full-time schedules to many hourly workers in at least a few Olive Gardens, Red Lobsters and LongHorn Steakhouses.

Darden said the test is taking place in "a select number" of restaurants in four markets, including Central Florida, but would not give details. The company said there has been no decision made about expanding it.

In an emailed statement, Darden said staffing changes are "just one of the many things we are evaluating to help us address the cost implications health care reform will have on our business. There are still many unanswered questions regarding the health care regulations and we simply do not have enough information to make any decisions at this time."

More:

"Janney Capital Markets analyst Mark Kalinowski said the cost of providing that could become higher for Darden under the Affordable Care Act. Because that law requires everyone to have health insurance, more workers will likely choose its coverage, Kalinowski said."

And as usual, the take from local media is that Darden is "greedy".

This time of year is typically “open enrollment” time. I expect a lot of employees all across the country are going to be shocked by the changes.

Valerie: Did you hear about Olive Garden? They’re trying to get around the Obamacare costs by only hiring part time workers.

Obama: Get me my pen. We need another Executive Order mucho pronto. Going through Congress is so, so yesterday. Gotta just love that Living Constitution.

[Darden, the world’s largest casual-dining company and one of the nation’s 30 largest employers, said it offers health insurance to all its approximately 185,000 employees. Many are offered a limited-benefit plan. That type of coverage is being phased out under health-care changes, which will ban annual limits for most plans.]

There are two obvious solutions:

  1. Nationalize all health insurance.
  2. Nationalize the restaurant industry.

Analysts say many other companies, including the White Castle hamburger chain, are considering employing fewer full-timers because of key features of the Affordable Care Act scheduled to go into effect in 2014. Under that law, large companies must provide affordable health insurance to employees working an average of at least 30 hours per week.

If they do not, the companies can face fines of up to $3,000 for each employee who then turns to an exchange — an online marketplace — for insurance.

"I think a lot of those employers, especially restaurants, are just going to ensure nobody gets scheduled more than 30 hours a week," said Matthew Snook, partner with human-resources consulting company Mercer.

Darden said its goal at the test restaurants is to keep employees at 28 hours a week.

Thanks obamma! Thanks Democrats! We are turning into a nation of part-timers. 25% less pay with no health insurance. Thanks again obamma and Democrats!

They are. This is why they are getting a pass. Imagine the media firestorm if Chick-fil-A tried the same thing.

An added bonus, every full time job that is converted into two part time jobs substantially reduces the unemployment rate, thereby assisting Our Glorious Leader's re-election efforts.

Eureka! I think you’ve solved the mystery as to why over the summer every burger joint and retail shop within eyeshot began hanging out the shingles for part-time help.

Gotta double the size of the workforce to keep ‘em all under 30 hrs.

If I were the owner of a company, corporation, business or concern that is going to be affected by Obamacare, and I could offload it at a price that would keep me in good comfort the rest of my life, I’d friggin sell it and hide the money in some form that the government could not touch effectively.

If Obama wins, expect this from a lot of large stock holders, business owners, etc. They’re gonna check out and try and outrun the chaos. I don’t blame them.

I don’t blame the CEO. He never said everybody is equal in Corporate America. He has a fiduciary responsibility to his shareholders to limit costs and work within the parameters of the law. It’s the lawmakers (Obama, Pelosi, Reid) who changed the game and who should be blamed.

He gets what he deserves, sad though, the employees pay the price.

Yup. We formerly had a choice of 7 plans offered by 4 different insurance carriers or Kaiser. This year we are being offered 2 plans by a single carrier (no PPOs or HMOs, either, just 1980's-style high-deductible plans). We can't get Kaiser unless we are overseas. And starting next year there will be an $85 per paycheck fee to cover an employed spouse (thanks a lot, homos). Bumpy roads ahead.

I have seen the future and it is multiple part time jobs for everyone.

It will become the norm for people to have their “morning” and “evening” jobs. Neither will amount to more than 30 hours a week, but everyone will have to work at least two jobs to make ends meet.

Goodbye 40 hour work week.

Goodbye quality family time.

Hello more commuting and gas usage.

The Law of Unintended Consequences is a b!tch.

“Darden is “greedy”.

That is what half of Obamacare is intending. It is a great way to demonize evil insurance companies, evil employers and the private sector in general. The policy is forcing costs up and quality down, and it has built in scapegoats!

It is truly evil.
