Chuck Todd: The enthusiasm gap is real — and a real problem for Obama (Watch Video)

Did the enthusiasm gap detected by the Politico/GWU poll published today have to do with the debate performance by Barack Obama on Wednesday night? Not necessarily, and it might mean that the full impact of the debate has yet to materialize. On yesterday's Meet the Press, Chuck Todd detailed the falloff in enthusiasm among key Democratic demographics, both compared to stronger Republican demos and to the 2008 election. And Todd points out that these numbers came from a survey before the debate (via NewsAlert):

The HuffPo has the transcript:

Well, it’s simply an enthusiasm gap. And we’re seeing it across the board. Look at here in this first one. 79% of Republicans call themselves extremely interested in this election. On a scale of one to ten, that means they said they’re a nine or a ten on interest in the election. 73% of Democrats.

Look at four years ago. It was a 13 point gap in favor of the Democrats. Let me go through some various voting groups. This is an important voting group. Seniors are an important voting group to Mitt Romney now. He leads them by about 10 points in our NBC Wall Street Journal poll. Look at this in engagement in the election. Four years ago was 81%, pretty higher. Even higher this time at 87%. And Romney’s doing better among seniors than McCain did.

Let me go to an important voting group for the president, young voters. Look at this engagement level: 52% now they call themselves, voters 18 to 34, call themselves extremely interested in this election. Four years ago it was 72%. That 20 gap. The president wins young voters by huge margins. He’s winning them by some 20-plus points. But if you don’t have this kind of enthusiasm, they’re not going to show up to the polls.

And then let me give you this last one here, because this is, I think, the most important one. And that’s Hispanics. The President’s winning Hispanics by 50 points. He hit the 70% mark. However, look at this in terms of interest in the election. 59% now, it was 77%. What does that mean? President got 65%, I believe, of Hispanics four years ago.

So even though he’s going to get more Hispanics, if less of them turn out, it’s a net zero. And yet, you look at Republican enthusiasm, up, senior enthusiasm, up. It’s a huge problem. And by the way, all of this, pre-debate.

Had Obama shown up to the debate with some preparation and energy but still got outdebated, the impact on voter enthusiasm might have been minimal. However, Obama looked distracted, disengaged, and, well … unenthusiastic about his own candidacy on Wednesday night. If Obama can’t be bothered to at least look enthusiastic, what kind of

Its too late - Obama has all the votes he’s gonna get right now. It remains to be seen whether its enough to be re-elected.

I think the people who have been demonized by Obama over the years are so numerous that they should have their own demographic: bankers, doctors, insurance companies, people who work for fossil fuel companies (oil, gas, and especially coal), entrepreneurs, the top 1%, people who build private jets, white people, pro-life Christians, people in the private sector, the state of Arizona, people for traditional marriage, gun owners, etc. That’s a looooong list!

I was watching the Fox Business Network this morning and Charlie Gasparino was talking about who might be first in line to be the new Treasury Secretary(Now this is the same Gasparino who a week and a half ago said that Obama had this election in the bag) was talking about who Romney might be leaning towards as his new Treasury Secretary, now I didn’t hear everything but I was like damn look how the tides have turned, from Obama has it in the bag to who Romney is going to pick. These Debates DO make a difference, a BIG difference. Romney had free air time, 70 million+ people saw that debate, it was a Ad and Romney didn’t have to spend one penny

Obama can't got the bathroom without checking his teleprompter.

Obama reads someone else's words and thinks he's got game.

He is a terrible speaker without his crutch, uh-uh, ah-ah, I-I, We-We, stammering and stuttering his way along, often losing his thought.

Upchuckie Todd, pissy matthews, al not so sharpton, calypso louie, little bill maher and some of the ugliest females on the planet have hooked their horses to a losing wagon. after this fiasco, maybe they get together an do some type of hemmorioidal relief ad. At least that way they would be doing some positive service for the country they like to live in.

The enthusiasm to rid our country o this parasite is something I've not felt since Carter. When Sarah ran against the Republican parasite Murkowski in the (R) Governor primary, that was on par as well.

This girl that I follow on Facebook(That I had no idea at the time was a lefty freak) volunteers at Obama’s campaign in Ohio every single day(Even though she collects disability from the Govt, yet she can volunteer for the schmuck everyday) well she just posted a photo on her wall of the Obama campaign office where she volunteers, and I don’t know if she did this accidentally or not but its EMPTY..not one soul in there! The enthusiasm for Obama is dead..the ones who say they will vote for him probably won’t even bother showing up on election day, the hope and change BS is gone..they see him for the fraud he really is

“or we just PRINT UP THE MONEY?”

It’s slightly more complicated than that.

1. U.S. Secretary of Treasurer Tim Geithner prints up a big bunch of new U.S. Treasury bonds that yield some arbitrarily low interest rate because he knows Ben Bernake will buy them no matter how low their interest rate is.

2. Big Ben Bernake at the Fed trades Timmy a bunch of new ones and zeros spinning on some new hard drives at the Fed for those freshly printed super-low yield Treasury bonds because China has smartened up and won’t buy them anymore. So, the Fed doesn’t even need to actually print the money anymore. They just deposit a string of zeros and ones in the Treasury bank account.

My gut tells me 62/38 Romney. Biggest blowout in history. Obama has about 60% of those who voted for him the 1st time. He has no-one new. Other than a few who came of age to vote and whose brains have not fully developed yet. As Rush say’s “Obama has and actively targets the Idiot vote”.

And I think Romney will take about 15 percent of the black vote too. I think just like what happened with Stacey Dash yesterday on twitter, many blacks are just afraid to say they will vote for Romney out of fear of being called a racist, or having their lives threatened. Some may say they are voting for Obama but when they get into that voting booth they will pull the lever for Romney
