KEENE, Calif. – President Obama’s trip here to dedicate the Cesar Chavez National Monument wasn’t for a campaign rally, but sure felt like one.

There were the chants of “Si, se puede,” led by Obama himself at the beginning and end of his remarks. There were the cries of “four more years” from the thousands of mostly Hispanic people who gathered to watch. There were the “Obamanos” stickers and shirts arrayed throughout the scene.

Cesar Chavez Would Not Have Supported Amnesty for Illegals

...Chavez decided to do something about it. According to numerous historical accounts, Chavez ordered union members to call the Immigration and Naturalization Service and report illegal immigrants who were working in the fields so that they could be deported. Some UFW officials were also known to picket INS offices to demand a crackdown on illegal immigrants.

Was it better than the Paul Wellstone memorial service or the Tucson shootings memorial?

When Chavez founded the UFW, there were 70,000 members. Now there are no more than 5,000. The union and their Democrat enablers killed agriculture in California, and we now get most of our grapes from Chile.

Nice work, everybody. A true model for the Obama Method of economic destruction. Coming soon to an entire country near you.

Bitter Harvest by John Steinbacher (Whittier, Calif.: Orange Tree, 1970) tells the other side of the story--how Chavez amassed power by using goon squads to intimidate farm workers.

Obama admires Socialism/Marxism as he is one....Obama’s lack of dignity and class of any sort boggles the mind. In case anyone has forgotten, Cesar Chavez more or less has shown our boy president his middle finger.......

I want to make it clear that I have never had a problem understanding Mr. Chavez. He was a very loving family man who worked on behalf of farm laborers because the laborers had difficulty voicing their grievances on behalf of himself. He celebrate American Independence day and saluted the American flag. He opposed amnesty for illegal aliens (seemingly, he supported the term undocumented worker), but he did not believe that Mexicans should be coming illegally into the U.S. The last point was a practical one, I think, because such illegal entry took jobs away from American farm workers and agriculture workers who came across the border under the Bracero program until it expired in 1964.

I believe that Cesar Chavez was interested in bettering the lives of his fellow Mexican-American farm workers.

We need less spin and more facts on FR. Cesar Chavez was born in Yuma AZ and was college educated. He was an Alinsky disciple. Yet he would never tolerate illegal immigration as you can hardly bargain for a UFW minimum wage with hoards of illegals working for less. So he marched against the 'wetbacks' in Tucson, Blythe and El Centro.

One reason for reduced UFW membership is that today field workers make good money, often command benefits and that hand labor is required less and less in the fields, although hand packing a grape lug of 22 lbs perfectly in a 120 degree vineyard is an art form. It is also the result of many Mexicans becoming permanent residents, then citizens who assimilated into California culture. Some of the third generation are now lawyers, engineers, military officers, mayors, and hosts of music and social media events such at the Weekend in Coachella. Important to note that very few migrant farm workers inhabit our prisons or deal in drug trafficking. They came to work in 1950-2000, which is not true of those which give us the illegal problems of welfare abuse, etc. today.

Another reason is that the UFW was more an arm of the progressives in the Democrat party than a rigorous union i.e., the UFW never had the organization to compete with the Teamsters Union et al for workers in the packing houses and transportation.

Finally and no biggie but we do not get most of our (table) grapes from Chile. Just nonsense. We get contra-seasonal grapes (December-May) from Chile using mainly American patented varieties. On the early end of the season, we get grapes from Mexico as well, mainly seedless Perlette and Thompsons.
