Dem Heitkamp Pulls Even In North Dakota Senate Poll

By Sean Lengell - October 8, 2012

Democratic Heidi Heitkamp, once considered a long shot to win North Dakota's open Senate seat, is locked in a dead heat with GOP candidate Rep. Rick Berg, a new poll says.

The results of a Mason-Dixon survey released Monday afternoon show both candidates with 47 percent of the vote, with 6 percent undecided.

But Mrs. Heitkamp is "recognized favorably" by 46 percent of the respondents, compared with 42 percent for Mr. Berg. The Democrat's "unfavorable" rating of 35 percent is two percentage-points lower than her opponent.

A similar percent of voters have "neutral" opinions of the candidates; 20 percent for Mr. Berg and 18 percent for Mrs. Heitkamp.

The telephone survey of 625 likely voters has a margin of error of plus-or-minus 4 percent.

My best guess is it is a combination of North Dakota’s oil-boom economy being much, much better than the national average and the fact that Heitkamp is running with strong pro-energy stances. She’s been supportive of the Keystone Pipeline and favors fracking. She seems to be a pretty liberal candidate in all other respects, but I gotta think her support for the goose that’s laying golden eggs in North Dakota (i.e. oil) is winning a lot of support.

It’s up to Berg to say she will vote to make Harry Reid the Senate Majority leader and he’s been the leader the last 6 years. I would also go after her ties to Obama and she will support many of his policies including Obamacare continuation and all the tax increases on the middle class that come with it.

That support of energy will go out the window on the way to DC..

You can bet the farm on it.

Demorats will say whatever they need to say to get your vote, North Dakotans, then they will screw you for as long as they can.

Wise up.

It is hard to believe a conservative state like this would vote in a rat.

Strange poll and hard to find the partisan breakdown. From the Valley News Live:

A total of 625 adults were interviewed statewide by telephone. All stated they were likely to vote in the November general election. Those interviewed were randomly selected from a phone-matched list of North Dakota adult residents that included both land-line and cell phone numbers. The margin for error, is no more than ±4%.

I smell and odor.

Oh, I don’t doubt that. At best, she’ll pull a Joe Manchin if she gets in. I’m just sayin’ that it’s a good position to take if you want to get elected in a state where oil has lowered the unemployment to 3.7% and brought the biggest jump in average incomes seen in a long, long time.

Must be a state full of dumbasses to believe that she’d actually keep her word! She’d be required not to. No way dems would allow her to vote against “green”

"Strange," a word which in the instant context means "nonsense."

"Stated that they were likely to vote" is not what constitutes a "likely voter" in anyone's formula except Mason-Dixon's.

A poll of adults, which tell us within +-4% of how adults will vote on election day. Fortunately, adults don't vote, voters do. MD's poll is actually bad news for the lib, because she's now DOWN a point from the last (bogus) MD poll.

I have never seen so many "strange" polls before this election. The occupation knows they are losing their grip on power.

Just like with all dems, the campaign rhetoric about supporting the oil industry will give way to an “epiphany” .. meaning a shift toward bogus “green energy” as soon as she is elected. I wish the people of ND would open their eyes. They`ll rue the day they elected her.

Unfortunately, even with a win in ND, it`s looking like the best the GOP is going to be able to get is a 50-50 tie. Things were looking hopeful for awhile.. then along came Todd Akin`s gaffe of the decade.

Take a look at the political history of North Dakota. They’ve flirted with socialism.

Correct, they’ve long elected Dem senators..who toe the liberal line once in DC..However, if these polls are toi be believed, given Obama’s unpopularity in ND, some 40% of voters would have to split their tickets..

Yes and as one who spent most of his life in North Dakota, the voters do in fact split their tickets. In 1984 Reagan
carried the state with something like 60-65% of the vote, but almost the entire ticket of state-wide Republican officeholders lost.

Regarding some of the comments such as ND’ers splitting their vote, toying with socialism, etc. All correct.

Socialism: My recollection of our history is that the Farmers Union got this going in the early 1900’s, there is even remnants of a commune in Minot. Farmers Union is now called CENEX (acronym for Central Exchange). Outright open socialism is gone today.

ND voting: The state held for many years with all democrat governor and Washington delegation. It’s slowly turning around with a change in demography. The state’s economy was primarily agriculture related, with many small farms that depended on subsidies doled out by rats. Farms are much larger now which means fewer farmers that are now better educated and business oriented. The oil boom is bringing into the state many people just happy to have a good paying job, and I really doubt if they will vote for obaminomics.

Hietkamp has openly lied in her campaign. She has a huge anchor tied to her neck called obama, so she has to pretend to be something she is not. She is advertising herself as an independent, when her adds plainly state they are paid for by the democrats. She’s a fraud, one of the key elements necessary in being a good democrat.

She’s an Ed Schultz grade democrat. Ed used to have a talk show here in ND and when he went national her brother Joel took the show over.

Berg adds say Heitkamp supports obamacare. I have never seen one of her adds where she refutes it.

ND voting GOP at the federal level has been only a recent event. Prior to 2010, the last time they voted for 2 out of 3 GOP officials was in 1978. Before that, not since the 1950s did they have the entire delegation (and those Republicans were NOT Conservatives).
