The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has decided to award the Nobel Prize in Physics for 2012 to

Serge Haroche Collège de France and Ecole Normale Supérieure, Paris, France

and

David J. Wineland National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and University of Colorado Boulder, CO, USA

"for ground-breaking experimental methods that enable measuring and manipulation of individual quantum systems"

Perhaps the quantum computer will change our everyday lives in this century in the same radical way as the classical computer did in the last century.
Perhaps.

That would probably not be so nice as we would not be able to have secure transfer of money, except with one-time-pads.

Could we possibly have yet another in the long, long list of Jewish Nobel Prize winners? Wineland is a fairly common Jewish name.

I give this a 50/50 chance. There are many non-Jewish David Winelands in America living in rural areas of Texas and Pennsylvania where you don't find Jews. Probably he is Jewish but...

Isn't that where you and your moron friends (in Hawaii) close the windows of an old VW bus. Toke up a lot of pot. Then when the pot is gone you all raise your mouths close to the VW ceiling as possible and suck down the smoke up there. Definitely took some physics smarts, that heat rises

Now that’s funny. So we have one and possibly two to add to the list. What is it about Jews and Physics (and chemistry and medicine and music and etc etc )?

La Griffe du Lion addressed this in 2003. If you remember any high-school stats, give the piece a read.
