Well, yeah, if government is your Daddy, it’s also your master. That’s the whole point.

What will American trade their freedom for?

250 minutes a month of free cell phone time?
A colonoscopy with no co-pay?

Just how low can you bid for American’s freedom?

Freedom.... from making any decision for yourself.
Freedom.... from taking any responsibility for yourself.
Freedom.... from having to think for yourself.

Too many Americans think what you propose is an ideal place to live.

The Fire Eaters in the pre-civil war era South-- allies of Buchanan--

The "fire eaters" were not supporters of continued Union, and therefore they were not allies of Buchanan.

Buchanan was trying to keep the Union together and abate the controversies.

The Republicans and War Democrats wanted a firm Union .... with lots and lots of dead Southerners underneath it. After 40 years of Northern pulpit-pounding and pulp-newspapering editorial fury, they wanted to rip the South's throat out, and had no use for Buchanan and his "doughfaces". Their whole stance was basically that of an enraged doberman.
