Game Changer? The federal government paid nearly $40 million dollars to Claire McCaskills husbands businesses her first five years in office as Missouri Senator. During that time McCaskill has had influence over federal policy that has directly affected her familys income.
Missouri royalty - The rest of the country has suffered but Claire McCaskill and her husband Joseph Shepard have done very well these past five years.
There are renewed calls for Democrat McCaskill to release her tax returns. ABC3040 reported:
Businesses affiliated with the husband of Missouri Sen. Claire McCaskill have received almost $40 million in federal subsidies for low-income housing developments during her first five years in office, though it appears only fraction of that has made it to the familys bank accounts, according to an Associated Press analysis.
McCaskills Republican challenger, Rep. Todd Akin, says the federal payments should be a cause for concern among voters. Hes attempting to portray the Democratic senators family as a prime beneficiary of government largesse.
There is a conflict of interest and a breach of trust with the citizens of our state, Akin said in an interview with the AP.
McCaskill campaign spokesman Caitlin Legacki called such assertions flat-out wrong.
There is no evidence that McCaskill personally routed the money to her husbands businesses. But she voted for some and against other bills that funded the federal housing and agriculture departments, which in turn provide subsidies to businesses with federal contracts to provide low-income housing.

Bye bye Claire, we hardly knew ya!
Don’t count your chickens! But if he wins, he can tell the GOPe to go Helgoland.
I can believe it. A bunch of crooks that need to be in jail.
“Independent superPACS are now with Akin. Hes doing well. I think hell win it. McCatSkull is just too unpopular.”
I’m a Missouri resident, and I am actually going to vote FOR Todd Akin rather than just against McRascal. However, except for moral/social conservatives like myself, I am concerned that most of the support for Akin is actually rejection of McRascal. That may not be enough to overcome her liberal bastions (and the ghetto vote) in St. Louis and Kansas City. Were it just the rural counties, then Todd Akin would easily win. It is the city liberals and ghetto dwellers that vote for any dem. They are the same ones that will be supporting Obama.
Note how the press (in this case ABC, which did not break the story) becomes the minimizer, trying to salvage the Dems: ...it appears only a fraction....
How BIG is a "fraction?" You know if it was a Republican, this tattered fig-leaf artifice would be left out.
