Texas mother who glued child's hands to wall faces possible life term
NBC News ^ | 10/9/12 | NBC News Staff

The Dallas mother who confessed to gluing her toddler to the wall then beating her as potty training punishment was in court Tuesday for a second day of testimony in her sentencing hearing.

Prosecutors were seeking 45 years in prison for 23-year-old Elizabeth Escalona but she could spend the rest of her life in prison on the felony injury to a child conviction, the Dallas Morning News reported.

The grandmother of the girl, Ofelia Escalona, was expected to testify Tuesday against her daughter.

Barton fought back tears while testifying. It's been more than a year since she first saw 2-year-old Joselyn Cedillo in intensive care. She says the toddler was brought into the emergency room on September 7, 2011 with extensive bruising. The little girl was clinging to life.

"The child was brought in by a private vehicle with extensive trauma. It looked like the child had been abused and wasn't sure the child was going to make it. She had bruising on her belly," said Barton.

Barton also showed pictures of the little girl's injuries during the sentencing hearing.

Throw the book at her, yes. But,unless the kid died or was crippled, life seems somewhat harsh.Proportionality in sentencing is important for many reasons.Life,or death for killing.Forty years for crippling.Less for what she did...or appears to me to have done.

Gluing the mother to the wall and pistol whipping her sounds like a more appropriate punishment.

Bribing the toddler with M&M’s to use the potty, works.

Although it was cruel, I thought the sentence was disproportionate when I read the headline.

But after reading the article, this looks pretty close to attempted murder. From the look of it, it was only luck that the child didn’t die. And she probably would have, if help hadn’t been called and gotten there soon enough.

Enough to justify an attempted murder charge, I should think. With deliberate cruelty.

Any one who voluntarily covers their neck with tats is seriously disturbed.

Some animals eat their offspring.

The thing is, humans aren't just any old animal... If we aren't civilized by our parents, we tend to turn out like this worthless waste of carbon.

Doctors say the torture that the 2-year-old endured at the hands of her mom put her in a coma for several days. The doctor who saved the toddler's life testified on Monday why her mom should spend the rest of her life behind bars.

Yep, attempted murder.

Their own young? Not many. Lions come to mind if the young males try and usurp Papa’s place at the top of the pride.

Primates? We’re a brutal lot from the top down. Even packs of chimps will slaughter rival troop’s members for fun.

We need that veneer of civilization burnt into our brains like a BIOS on a CMOS chip in a computer. Without it, we tend to revert...

What do you expect... the Emperor Obamessiah has been shown to have no clothes. The US ambassador to Libya was captured, repeatedly raped and brutally murdered by rampaging MUSLIMS, along with other Americans, after pleading with the Obama administration to provide more security because the guy feared for his life. The Administration denied his repeated requests, cut security and then openly lied to the American people repeatedly regarding the truth of what happened.

Obamessiah showed the American people exactly how clueless and totally inept and out of his depth he is on basic matters of the economy and exactly who and what he is deprived of his teleprompter (Romney cleaned his clock for 67 MILLION Americans to see, and all the kings horses and all the kings men [aka MSM] can't put Howdy Doody the lying Pinocchio puppet back together again)

Obamessiah and his duplicitous minions have also "screwed the pooch" by botching the cooking of the books with ludicrous faux unemployment numbers.

The boy/man Obama does not dare show his face to answer questions because he can't. His entire record on every level is indefensible! Hence he hides from the press. Too bad for him he can't hide from Romney and two more debates. He is about to become "toast" and chopped liver all at the same time.

IF Obamessiah tries to duck the debates or create some phony pretense in order to avoid them like starting a war, bombing an aspirin factory, etc. ...all Romney needs to do is show up wit an "Empty Chair" and hold his own "Eastwood debate" for an hour! Not only will it drive home the point, it will just reinforce the truth: There is NOTHING THERE! Obamessiah is an empty man, in an empty suit, spouting empty words, comprising empty promises, which he HAS NOT and CAN NOT KEEP.

I agree with your pronouncement/judgment. What a terrible thing for a child to have to endure at the hands of it’s own mother!

Hopefully, the child will heal and recover from it. The mother’s ‘term of living hell’ will begin when she enters the prison and the female GP gets a turn at her for what she did to that baby girl.

Proportionality in sentencing is important for many reasons

Why? We do not have punishment proportionality in many aspects of life. Kids are spanked for simple disobedience. People are fired for stealing meager sums. You can be killed for jaywalking. It makes more sense for sentences to be proportional to the desired effect.

OK,an extreme example: there was a day not *that* long ago when you could get the chair (in some states) for rape.In those states where it was once true they certainly had the DP for murder. In such a situation (DP for rape *and* murder) a rapist has a strong incentive to kill his rape victim to keep her quiet, whereas if rape gets 20 years and murder gets death he has an incentive *not* to kill her.

This is not a mother, but an agent of evil set to harm the most helpless and innocent among us. Probably an Obama supporter...

Our prayers to the little angel... may God Bless you and Keep you and Give you Peace... although your mother and father may forsake you... I will never forsake you says the Lord... To the little ones such as these belongs the Kingdom of Heaven.

The promise of abortion was that there would be no more child abuse. Every child would be a wanted child. People who did not want children did not have to have them. Instead, abortion has made life cheap. Add to it the fact that an easy way to get free housing, food, money, cell phone is to have a kid, and you end up with this.

I see it as attempted murder.

It's only attempted murder if it's proven that she wanted the baby to die. It seems clear that she was emotionally out of control, depraved and cruel, but I don't see any evidence that she wanted the child dead.

I think the sentence is a bit of an overreaction, when you compare it to other crimes which clearly merit death or life sentences. (i.e. Serial murder, premeditated murder, serial rape, etc..)

I'd go for aggravated battery, kidnapping and child abuse charges, but I don't see attempted murder here, personally.

There is no time like the present. The death penalty for certain aggravated rape is the law in 7 states today. If there were any evidence that this caused more victim deaths I am sure liberals would cry it from the mountain tops. (Fair warning, when you espouse that point of view you are knee deep in an excercise of liberal talking-pointmaking)

Should any data arise showing that rapists are killing their victims, you can fix it thus: The penalty for rape or murder is lethal injection, for rape and murder - being burned alive at the stake.
