CHARLOTTE, N.C. One out of every seven drivers on the road in North Carolina does not have a license, according to a study by AAA.
The agency plans to use its research to push state lawmakers to take a tougher stance to get these dangerous and illegal drivers off the roads.
**SNIP**
"I'm driving without a license. I get caught. First offense would be a stiff fine, a potential for jail," Crosby said of what the group would like to see. "If I get caught a second time, you take my car. That would cut down on it quite a bit."

Hmmmmm....subtle hint about Voter ID laws???
There are consequences to allowing millions of illegal immigrants to move into the nation and establish residence with no consideration to the laws.
2 out of 3 or 4...Okies don’t have insurance.
Drivers license?
Why, why...that’s racist.
Just think about how many people would be disenfranchised from driving if the evil, rightwing pro-licensers get their way.
How do you drive around North Carolina to get to South Carolina?
A similar thing happened in Florida years ago. The state police calculated that half a million drivers in Florida were driving without a license.
However, they also noted something equally important.
Drivers without licenses were statistically no better or worse drivers than those with licenses.
And since trying to police up 500,000 unlicensed drivers, many of whom were poor, would be ridiculously expensive, as would be punishing them, the state police came up with a better idea:
Stopping the *bad* drivers, with or without licenses, is far more important than worrying about a piece of paper. Bad drivers cause accidents, kill and maim people. All driving without a license does is deny a bureaucrat some paperwork.
This was a shocking thing to say, and most people responded by saying, “But what about drivers licenses as a form of ID?” Well, replied the state police, if someone needs a photo ID, the state also issues those. While drivers licenses are used as ID, that is not their primary purpose, it is just a convenience.
So should the state stop issuing drivers licenses at all?
No. Most people who drive are willing to get licenses that generally show that they are reasonably good drivers, except for those who pass the tests who aren’t good drivers. And the convenience of a photo ID is worth the hassle and cost to most people.
The best bet is to have a small fine for not having a drivers license, and associate required minimal insurance with the vehicle, rather than the driver. The cost of insuring bad drivers is the same, licensed or not, and is balanced by the premiums for better insurance paid for by good drivers who want more than the minimum.
So the bottom line is that better results, at less cost, are achieved by not fretting about things like this.
Gotta be a ‘rat’s idea... Making the rich pay their fair share. If we’re going to do that, how about this: Get caught a second time, lose your food stamps, public housing and any other welfare you’re getting, as well as being forced to take a job?
Looks like it’s time to paint NC as a bunch of yokels who ignore laws and are “so stupid they fell for Romney’s lies.”
Evidently, they can all move to Massachusetts and practice law.
I don’t really care about the drivers license, I care about the lack of insurance. Any knucklehead who can more or less see and is moderately sober for a few hours can pass a driving test. It’s more a question of taxation and ....(shhhhhhh!) CONTROL.
1 in 7 is about the number of illegal aliens driving in NC

I always thought the guys on the 50cc scooters were the convicted drunks.
I am surprised it is that low. I would think nationally it is 1 in 5, drive on a suspended / revoked license or no license at all.
