WaPo Reporter Says Bush 'Didn't Pay a High Enough Price' After DUI Revelation
NewsBusters ^

Posted on 10/09/2012 6:04:48 PM PDT by chessplayer

Washington Post reporter Aaron Blake told CNN on Tuesday that candidate George W. Bush "just didn't pay a high enough price" in the 2000 election for his DUI arrest that occurred more than 20 years prior.

Blake was talking about famous "October surprises," or unforseen events occurring in the month before the election that could be game-changing. The Bush DUI revelation was a hit job planted by a Democratic source that mushroomed into a big story because of the liberal media.

I personally think the anti-Bush stuff from Democrats is more likely to backfire. Say what you will about Bush’s policies on the patriot act and other things, but he is definitely one of our more honorable and honest politicians we’ve ever had.

A lot of people don’t remember that:

(1) GWB was consistently ahead by about 4-5% in all of the national polls in the weeks leading up to the 2000 election. In the absence of this story, it was not going to be a particularly close election.

(2) The story was originated by a democratic party operative on the Friday before the election, and ABC/CBS/NBC/CNN ran with the democratic talking points all weekend long in a 72 hour negative advertisment against GWB.

(3) The incident was over 20 years old at the time of the election - from the late 1970s.

(4) Despite the way the press still reports it, GWB was never convicted of DUI, DWI or any other alcohol related driving offense. He hit a mailbox, was issued a ticket for reckless driving, and the ‘suggestion’ was that he may have been drinking at the time.

(5) Although driving under the influence was never a good thing, the attitudes towards DUI were MUCH different in the 1970s than they were in the year 2000. The press never put any of this in context.

In 1976 a DUI charge didn't carry the weight it did in 2000, or does today.  Bush complied with the laws at the time (1976), and that was that.  He deserved no more or less than he got for the charge at the time.  That's not to state that it was acceptable back then, but Bush shouldn't have been held to a standard any different than anyone else at the time, and I don't believe he was.

I'm not a big Bush supporter, but bringing this up 36 years later, is asinine.

Bush acknowledges 1976 DUI charge

November 02, 2000|From staff and wire reports

Texas Gov. George W. Bush acknowledged Thursday that in 1976 he was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol near his parents' home in Kennebunkport, Maine.Bush, who was 30 at the time, pleaded guilty, paid a $150 fine and his driving privileges were temporarily suspended in Maine.

Late Thursday evening, following a campaign rally in this tightly contested Midwestern state, Bush--with his wife, Laura, at his side -- told reporters news accounts of the incident were accurate, that he had been drinking in a bar with Australian tennis pro John Newcombe and others.

"I'm not proud of that. I made some mistakes. I occasionally drank too much, and I did that night. I learned my lesson." Bush said he was not jailed after the arrest. "I told the guy (the arresting officer) I had been drinking, what do I need to do? He said, 'here's the fine.' I paid the fine."Bush said the timing of the initial news report, just days before Americans elect a new president, was "interesting." When asked where the story may have originated, he said, "I've got my suspicions."

Campaign aides of Democratic presidential candidate Al Gore and officials with the Democratic National Committee both said they first learned of the arrest from news reports Thursday and said it would be inappropriate to comment on the matter.

Gore spokesman Chris Lehane said the vice president learned of the story while flying from Chicago to a campaign event in El Paso, Texas.

Kevin Kelly, news director of WPXT, a Fox television affiliate station in Portland, Maine, said his station broke the story after one of its reporters learned of the arrest while covering an unrelated matter at the local courthouse.

"Somebody made a reference to it," Kelly said. The reporter followed up with phone calls, including one to the Maine Department of Secretary of State. Kelly said the department responded with a fax that detailed the 1976 arrest. Kelly said the reporter also talked to the arresting officer, who verified the incident.

Kennebunkport Police told CNN on Thursday night that the charge against Bush -- operating under the influence of intoxicating liquor -- was a Class D misdemeanor.

Karen Hughes, Bush's spokeswomen said the 54-year-old Texas governor, who has been open about his past drinking problems, had not publicly disclosed the arrest because not even his 18-year-old twin daughters were aware of it. He has said he gave up drinking the day after his 40th birthday.

Yeah. If only Bush had been thrown in prison for life (or at least 50 years) Gore would have won, and saved the world from being completely destroyed from global conflagration a few years ago.

Oh Wait...That didn’t happen.

...0.15 percent became the first commonly-used legal limit for blood alcohol concentration (BAC) in 1938...

...Originally 0.15 percent, it was later lowered to .10 percent. Due to federal pressure on all of the states, this limit was then further reduced to 0.08 percent.

I am glad he let us know he can’t let go and that it is still gnawing on him.

I like thinking how his obsession is ruining his life: keeping him awake at night, ruining his days, making it hard to concentrate, feeding his obsessive behavior - driving his friends away and scaring his family.

And (6) could be added:

The DUI story had been out there years before. Everyone on FR knew about it already for example but the MSM pretended it was a new revelation.

Since Bush had run for office before (gubernatorial elections in Texas) it was odd that the story had not surfaced earlier. Someone on FR at the time argued that because the offense was so old, someone going to the courthouse just trying to find dirt on GWB wouldn’t have learned about it. But it probably was mentioned in George H. W. Bush’s FBI file (they would have collected reports on close relatives), so it may be that Hillary found out about it from the FBI files she borrowed while in the White House, and then tipped off a Democrat operative who went to the courthouse and knew what to ask for (or maybe there was enough information on the incident in the FBI files). They then held it to release at the time when it would have the maximum impact on the election. It has been estimated that that story cost GWB 4 million votes.

“Ted Kennedy did “pay a high enough price” for his driving accident”

No! The Swimmer died comfortably in bed unlike his victim Mary Jo Kopechne who perished horribly of suffocation.

So Chappaquiddick deprived Teddy of his White House throne, hell he nearly stole the nomination from Jimmah Carter anyway. Kennedy stayed in the Senate until G-d’s little joke took away his ability to think up even more evil for this nation. He died in office, what’s the heavy price about that?

Lets see, a DUI without injuries here in California is a misdemeanor. ANY amount of Coke is a felony and under an oz of pot is also a misdemeanor. So, Odinga admits he’s committed felonies and this d-bag think Bush didn’t pay a big enough price for something that happened 20 years ago?

I’d like to see him explode as someone brings up O’s coke use.

Your post #14

Paragraph (4)

Despite the way the press still reports it, GWB was never convicted of DUI, DWI or any other alcohol elated driving offense.

I stand to be corrected but I seem to remember Rush Limbaugh going to bat for GWB. Anyway, the speaker on the radio, mentioned the driver was pulled over and was going very slowly. He said the the driver was being extra careful and not speeding.

Anyway. I got my first vehicle which was a 55 Ford. I thank God to this day that I never was involved in an accident while drinking. I will say only one thing as I sadly read of tragedy along these lines. Absolutely squeaky clean these last twenty years.

There, but for the grace of God go I.
