Glenn Beck wrecked a rental at his daughter's wedding over the weekend.
"So my rental car got totaled this weekend ... at my daughter's wedding," the outspoken talk-show host wrote on Twitter.
On his radio show on Tuesday, Beck described the ordeal, saying after the ceremony he parked the rental SUVa Ford Exploreralong a rain-soaked hill in the Finger Lakes area of New York, and forgot to put on the parking brake. Beck and his wife had already gotten out of the car when it began to slide, eventually flipping over, he said.

Do you think Glenn was excited that day? /sarcasm
Sorry, that's hard to believe.
You get out of the car, and then it starts to SLIDE?
So... having the parking brake on is not going to help if the dang thing is SLIDING...
I’m guessing this will be NBC’s biggest “news” in Late Night “comedy” tonight.
Sounds like a story that could be true, but I’d be more inclined to worry about an alcohol-based accident. Recidivism is common.
Cover story...lol. Ok Beck fess up and take it like a man. You drank too much champagne at the wedding and rolled the vehicle. Big whoop...lol
Do they portray Maher-Letterman-Louis CK as " lightening rods" for their apparent cause?
Yes, “sliding” seems unlikely - absent a steep, ice-covered slope. The only way I see something like this occurring is by leaving the shifter in *neutral*, allowing the car to roll.
I agree...maybe he forgot to put it in park is my guess
I do that in my pick up on occasion
Thanks for the visual and helping make this site the place to go for “the rest of the story”
“Rolling” I can believe. “Sliding”... well, as an old country boy, I know horse poop when I hear it.
And I'll bet you that not once, NOT EVEN ONE TIME did your truck slide away...
What a pant load.
This sounds like what a drunk liberal would say besides blaming Bush if they caused an accident like this.
Bush’s fault is probably as good of an excuse as any!
Stop the slander.
Beck hasn't had a drink in over 10 years.
The car SLID not ROLLED on its axle. It was a rain-slick slope.
Maybe if some would watch his show on Dish channel 212 they could hear the truth..
Are you on the prosecutions team in the Zimmerman case?
He was just materializing Barry’s analogy of how the Democrats handled the economy.
I’ve done that. We lived on a hill at our old house. One day I pulled up and stopped in front of the house in my SUV, jumped out, started to close the door and the SUV started moving backward. I leapt back in, hit the brake and put the vehicle in park. I was lucky.
never slid away...
rolling off is more common with a stick but Explorers sure don’t have those
Beck is supposed to be sober on everything ...drink and blow
who knows...just sounds funny
daughter’s wedding...I’d be nervous too
Saturday I drove near the Finger Lakes area. At points the road was covered in leaves and/or pine needles.
The traction control light came on quite often on our Grand Cherokee. It was worse than driving on ice.
A couple of times the military surplus trailer with surge brakes I was towing started to break loose.
I hate driving rental cars. You have to hunt for all the switches and controls. And the parking brake is always in a different spot from where I am used to.
Now you have me confused. According to the article:
" On his radio show on Tuesday, Beck described the ordeal, saying after the ceremony he parked the rental SUVa Ford Exploreralong a rain-soaked hill in the Finger Lakes area of New York, and forgot to put on the parking brake."
Granted, I take anything I read with a grain of salt.
No problem it can be buffed out.
“Rolling I can believe. Sliding... well, as an old country boy, I know horse poop when I hear it.”
Has Goodyear has come out with teflon tires?
My husband is a recovering alcoholic, that is a very ugly accusation to make against a person who is working on their sobriety.
The car SLID not ROLLED on its axle. It was a rain-slick “slope.”
How often has a car slid down a hill that wasn’t covered in ice? Probably 1 in a billion chance. Besides, if it so slipery a car could slide, it would extremely difficult to walk on. My bet is he didnt put it in park.
I took my last drink on January 19, 2009 and haven't looked back. But I can't say that hitting the sauce wouldn't sometimes be an awfully tempting way to get through ObaMao's presidency.
My hat is further off to Glenn Beck not only for taking and honoring the pledge, but for joining a t-totaling religion where he has an extra layer of protection.
I’m sure what it did was roll not slide. It is common for automatic transmissions to hold temporarily on an incline but if the car is jarred in the slightest the transmission will not hold. I have had this happen before. I parked and forgot to set the brake. As I close the door the car started to roll. Thankfully it didnt go too far before hitting a high curb and stopping.
Automatic transmissions with their parking gear give too many people a false sense of security, my uncle would re-build transmissions and showed me that the parking gear is a tiny peice of metal that locks into a saw tooth like gear inside the transmission. When I saw that the parking gear was that tiny I never stopped used the actual parking break in every automatic transmission car I ever drove.
You are in some ways better leaving a manual in gear than using park on an automatic transmission.
Beck came out and told everyone on his show about this, had he wanted to “keep it a secret” he could have easily done so.
gotten out of the car when it began to slide
Sorry, that’s hard to believe.

Maybe god is sending a message to Glenn, watch yourself, not from the almighty but from others who want to make his demise look like an “accident”....
Was this his way of protesting the wedding?
years ago, my brother and I had the same model car. His was auto, Mine was a stick. I had to borrow his for a couple days while mine was in the shop. My house was on a slight hill and I typically left it in gear and hopped out. I forgot to put his car in park and hoped out, only to see the car roll away. I managed to catch it and hop in before any damage occurred.
It isn’t ugly at all. It’s a trained observation. I’ve served as counselor on alcohol wards in veteran’s hospitals and with military communities.
It is the FIRST place you’d want to go with a recovering alcoholic. It is absolutely essential not to deny reality about the recidivism of alcoholics. Alcohol is tough enough to beat without loved ones continuing to be enablers by pretending that problems are not extremely common or are some kind of attack.
I'm glad I did it, although it was purely instinctive. The alternative was unthinkable.
Beck hasn't had a drink in over 10 years.
Oh, you can't expect that of some FReepers. They just have too much fun pointing fingers at others. Jerks.
I was in the Finger lakes area this weekend. The foilage is spectacular!
The craziest thing is these newfangled cars that have something that looks like a key, but isn't. You spend ten minutes at the lot just figuring out where to put the "key," finally to discover that there's nowhere special that you need to do so. Sometimes even the rental attendant was stumped.
The strangest part of his story is Beck said he waited until the next day to do anything. The truck rolls down a hill and it’s let’s go to bed everyone?
I’m sorry but if this was being investigated that would be a gian red flag something was amiss.
This happened after the ceremony. I’m guessing that he wanted to attend the reception.
Grace, my sons and I have been driving Blazers, Broncos, Ford F250’s, Ram pickyups, Trundras, Ridgelines and other 4 wheel drive vehicles for 3 going on 4 decades. Never had we had this happen in all types of weather and terrain.
This story is pure cocka!
The park pawl flashback from 3rd year HS auto mechanics class. One of the few things I remember from the automatic transmission segments.
I don't know Glenn or watch him or know anything about him.
I do know that a claim that the car starting sliding is most likely false, in the absence of ice (it was 50+ degrees over the weekend in Finger Lakes), or lava flows (none that I know of).
And if you'll notice, I didn't blame anyone for anything, except the claim that it was sliding.
That happens quite often with rental vehicles. Back when I was driving the tow truck we had an incident where a uhaul truck was parked at a hotel where the trans was taken out of gear but the Maxi-brakes were not properly applied the truck didn't move for several hours but when it did roll it rolled into a Piccadilly Pub.
The same thing happened with a SAAB when the driver stopped for gas and thought he left the thing in gear. he went to pay for the gas and when he went back the car was gone -- he reported it stolen but the security film showed it rolling away into a drainage ditch.
The moral to the story, Get the rental insurance especially if you are not familiar with the type of vehicle you will be driving.
Sorry, you may be joking, but just in case, according to him he quit drinking many years ago.
Beck: “I honestly said to the kids, ‘Well let’s go say our prayers and go to bed,’” Beck said. “It was just one of those days. I watched my car roll down the hill, literally roll. I just stood there. And I’m like, ‘All right let’s go to bed.’”
The next morning, Beck assessed the damage. “All the windows were broken out of it,” he said. “The axle is bent. It was horrible.”
So Beck sees the truck roll down the hill and goes in the house and sleeps, waiting until morning to do anything about it or even look at the damage to the truck or possible damage to anyone or anything in the truck’s path.
Sorry not buying it. People wait to report things to figure out a cover story. No sane person watches his vehicle careen down a hill and simply puts the kids to bed and sleeps.
I have no idea what actually happened and frankly it is about the 574th most important thing I care about in the world at the moment. But Beck is spinning a cover story.
Well, the guy is loaded for one thing, he can probably buy a replacement for the rental company just as easily as bat an eyelash. So he’s not going to fret over things like liability and insurance claims and so forth. It was his daughter’s wedding day and by gum, if you’re rich enough to not have to be bothered, you just aren’t going to be bothered.
