Evidence of Armstrong doping 'overwhelming,' agency says
CNN ^ | 10-10-2012 | Michael Pearson

Cyclist Lance Armstrong was part of "the most sophisticated, professionalized and successful doping program that sport has ever seen," the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency said Wednesday in preparing to release more than 1,000 pages of evidence in the case.

The evidence involving the U.S. Postal Service-sponsored cycling team encompasses "direct documentary evidence including financial payments, e-mails, scientific data and laboratory test results that further prove the use, possession and distribution of performance-enhancing drugs by Lance Armstrong," the agency said.

Armstrong lawyer Tim Herman dismissed what he called a "one-sided hatchet job" and a "government-funded witch hunt" against the seven-time Tour de France winner, who has consistently denied doping accusations.

But the USADA said 11 riders had come forward to acknowledge their use of banned performance-enhancing drugs while on the team. Among them are George Hincapie, Armstrong's teammate during his winning Tour de France runs.

"Early in my professional career, it became clear to me that, given the widespread use of performance-enhancing drugs by cyclists at the top of the profession, it was not possible to compete at the highest level without them," Hincapie said in a written statement. "I deeply regret that choice and sincerely apologize to my family, teammates and fans."

Three members of the Postal Service team will contest the accusations, the agency said. They are team director Johan Bruyneel, team doctor Pedro Celaya and Jose "Pepe" Marti, the team trainer. Each will get a hearing before an independent judge, according to the agency.

The agency compiled the evidence as part of its investigation into doping allegations that have dogged Armstrong and the Postal Service team for years. The organization is not a governmental agency but is designated by Congress as the country's official anti-doping organization for Olympic sports.

They really want this guy bad, don't they.

All for the sport, of course.

Good.

Now maybe the USPS can exit the advertising venue.

I never figured out why government agencies and protected monopolies like utilities had any need to advertise or sponsor anything for any reason.

They bring kids into the world and then say “uh, were tired of each other, let’s breakup”, well, they’re both selfish a**holes, divorce is an excuse, and frankly, I’m sick of it, it’s effectively destroyed the institution of marriage, along with the gayyyyyyyyyyyyyys!

Another good point.

Now, we might have a few less of those Spandex-clad potential roadkill groupies keeping me from getting where I need to go on a ROAD - designed for AUTOMOBILES - theoretically paid for by GASOLINE TAXES.

Supposedly Armstrong has had over 500 drug test during his cycling career. For them not to find positives along the way is amazing to say the least if one is to believe the charges that he doped.

Armstrong has been said to have much greater lung capacity than most other riders and thus the ability to go farther before the lactic acid build up caused him to hit the wall. That supposedly is one of the main traits that allowed him to dominate as he did.

Drugs, who knows? He says no and they haven’t produced test to show otherwise.

I looked at one poll on that cycling site, it’s 160-10 saying he doped.

“Anne of the Thousand Days”. He was quite good in it. I happened to come across it again last week, and although I have never had much respect for his career or him personally, imho, that holds up.

The dope makers, and therefore the takers, are usually years ahead of the testers. That’s why so many titles and medals get stripped years later. There are Olympic events from 20 years ago that no longer have a full slate of winners because so many test failed years later. In general if the sport is cycling or track assume they’re on dope until 20 years later.

” U.S. District Judge Sam Sparks wrote, “USADA’s conduct raises serious questions about whether its real interest in charging Armstrong is to combat doping, or if it is acting according to less noble motives.”[11] Tygart was previously involved in the investigation of Floyd Landis.[3]”

Do you notice that they never say what he doped with all of those years that didn’t show up in all of those tests. It must have been magic beans:-) They also don’t explain how he passed the tests. The winners know they are going to be tested. The teammates have just a chance to get tested. I believe the teammates might have doped to just keep up with Lance’s ability. The team leader also gets an easier time of it by using the teammates to always block the wind and to run down breakaways so he does have to expend too much energy until it really counts. However, from my athletic days, winning these types of events is much more about the ability to push through pain than pure athletic ability.

I think this is more an issue of turf war rather than an issue over one rider. (see WE got him and you could not)

Not Guilty/Guilty perhaps, but what about the due process. You don’t just had a stack of deal induced confessions and then scream confess. (nobody expect the spanish inquisition! da da dummmmmmm)

the evidence should have been fully transparent, examined, sumbect to discovery, depostions, iow a full blown defense with the burden of proof to the accuser. NOT prover yourself innocent.

Landis was not on Armstrong’s team when he got busted.

That is true. Landis rode with Armstrong in 2002, 03 and 04 during the time the team was alleged to have participated in "the most sophisticated, professionalized and successful doping program that sport has ever seen," .

My question is, if it was so damn successful, then why did Landis go off the reservation and partake of other drugs that ultimately got him busted?

Since Landis has already been convicted of being both a liar and a cheat, why is he suddenly being portrayed as the arbiter of truth and honesty? The question that hasn't been asked is what kind of amnesty is he being promised for his questionable testimony? And the same question can be asked of the other teammates of Armstrong........Do I need to expand it to the other top riders in the CIU who have curiously been exempt from the same scrutiny?

Until the USADA has pursued the other cyclists in the CIU with the same ferocity as they have gone after Armstrong then they are nothing but partisan witch hunters following a govt. driven agenda.......

""If you ain't cheatin', you ain't tryin'" is an old NASCAR expression. Junior Johnson had this to say about his creativity when it came to building cars:

"I loved the game. Maybe I'd have four of five new things on a car that might raise a question. But I'd always leave something that was outside of the regulations in a place where the inspectors could easily find it."

just from what I've read and heard, which is limited, I've always read that Armstrong repeatedly stating that he never failed a drug test....

but I've never read nor heard him say..."I didn't do drugs".....

The runt who runs this laughable US Anti Doping agency is a lawyer looking to make name a for himself. Everyone was doping back then so I could care less if Lance Armstrong and his team were. I like the Tour De France but doping (your own blood stored a while back, then transufused for competition) has been going on for years and others were doing it bigger than Lance Armstrong
