Posted on 10/10/2012 2:24:21 PM PDT by NYer
Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney made his pro-life views clear today in response to a question from a reporter on the campaign trail in Ohio.
Romney said he would govern as a pro-life president, de-fund the nation’s largest abortion company, and reinstate a policy preventing taxpayer funding of international abortion promotion efforts on the part of Planned Parenthood.
“I think I’ve said time and again that I’m a pro-life candidate and I’ll be a pro-life president. The actions I’ll take immediately is to remove funding for Planned Parenthood. It will not be part of my budget. And also I’ve indicated that I will reverse the Mexico City position of the president. I will reinstate the Mexico City policy which keeps us from using foreign aid for abortions overseas,” he said, according to Politico.
Earlier in the day, a spokeswoman for Governor Mitt Romney said the presidential candidate will be a pro-life president, a stark contrast the pro-abortion record President Barack Obama has built up during his time in the White House.
Romney spokeswoman Andrea Saul has emailed out a statement about Romney to multiple media outlets after the liberal Des Moines Register newspaper ran a quote from Romney attempting to paint him as less than pro-life.
Gov. Romney would of course support legislation aimed at providing greater protections for life, Saul told National Review.
In a comment to NBC News, Saul added, Mitt Romney is proudly pro-life, and he will be a pro-life president.
Those comments are not going over very well with the nations top pro-abortion groups, which are working aggressively to defeat Romney because of his pro-life positions against abortion, abortion funding and taxpayer funding for the nations biggest abortion business.
Nancy Keenan, president of NARAL, said of Romney, we cannot trust him to lead our country.
Romney has repeatedly supported overturning Roe v. Wade and would appoint Supreme Court Justices who share his anti-choice views. If that wasnt enough, Romney chose Congressman Paul Ryan, someone who co-sponsored and repeatedly voted for the Federal Abortion Ban, as his running mate for President, Keenan continued.
Keenan said NARAL will engage its over one-million member activists to remind voters of Romneys true anti-choice agenda.
Meanwhile, Planned Parenthood is out today with a blog post attacking Romney and laying out how he opposes abortion and wants to overturn Roe v. Wade.
On a number of occasions, Romney has reiterated his position and desire to overturn Roe v. Wade, thereby ending safe and legal abortion.
- During a 2012 Republican primary presidential debate in New Hampshire, Romney said, Do I believe the Supreme Court should overturn Roe v. Wade? Yes, I do. [ABC, New Hampshire GOP Presidential Debate, 1/7/12]
- On the anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision, Romney released a statement saying, Today marks the 39th anniversary of one of the darkest moments in Supreme Court history, when the court in Roe v. Wade claimed authority over the fundamental question regarding the rights of the unborn. [LifeNews, 1/22/12]
- He called Roe, Bad Law and Bad Medicine. Romney: I support the reversal of Roe v. Wade, because it is bad law and bad medicine. Roe was a misguided ruling that was a result of a small group of activist federal judges legislating from the bench. [National Review, 6/18/11]
- When asked if the repeal of Roe v. Wade would be a good day for America, former Gov. Romney responded, Absolutely. [MSNBC, Transcript of GOP Presidential Debate in California, 5/3/07]
As recently as January, Romney has pledge to overturn Roe v. Wade, and as president, he would have the power to appoint Supreme Court judges that could support his extreme agenda. We cant afford to see what four years of a Romney presidency is like; in fact, we cant afford to see what one day of a Romney presidency looks like!
Make no mistake, Romney wants to get rid of Planned Parenthood, repeal Obamacare on day one,
Earlier this year, Romney laid out the pro-life agenda he would take as president.
You obviously didn't read his record or the conservative leaders who worked with him and said "In fact, the entire nation has benefited from his socially conservative, pro-family actions in office. As we explained earlier, his leadership on the marriage issue helped prevent our nation from being plunged into even worse legal turmoil following the court decision that forced gay marriage upon our Commonwealth."
There isn't a single office-holder who has been in this fight longer and who worked harder to defend marriage.
Those who turn this reality upside down can be shown the facts, but it's up to them to have the decency and honesty to recognize it.
big whoop... he supported DADT, and ENDA (an employer not being able to say “I’m firing you because you’re gay” or a bank being able to say “I’m denying you this loan because you’re gay”).
Now look at what he actually did as governor...
Aside from the letter above regarding his trying to get a Protection of Marriage referendum on the state ballot blocking gay marriage, and submitting “An Act Protecting Religious Freedom” to protect Catholic Charities from having to provide gay adoptions, he also did the following.
supported death penalty -”Additionally, Romney filed legislation to reinstate capital punishment, but was defeated in the Massachusetts House of Representatives on a 99-53 vote.”
entitlement reform - Romney fought for legislation that would bring Massachusetts welfare system up to date with federal standards by increasing the number of hours each week recipients must work and establishing a five-year limit for receiving benefits. Much to his credit and to the dismay of many Massachusetts liberals, Romney successfully forced Medicaid recipients to make co-payments for some services and successfully pushed for legislative action forcing new state workers to contribute 25% of their health insurance costs, up from 15%. Governor Romney also deserves praise for proposing to revolutionize the Massachusetts state pension system by moving it from a defined benefit system to a defined contribution system.
repeatedly tried to lower tax rates - “In May of 2004, Mitt Romney proposed cutting the states income tax rate from 5.3% to 5.0%a measure Massachusetts voters had approved in a 2000 referendum, but was blocked by the State Legislature in 2002. The proposed tax cut would have provided $675 million in relief over a year and a half. When the Massachusetts Legislature refused to budge, Romney proposed the same tax cut in 2005 and again in 2006 with no success. Romney was more successful when he took on the State Legislature for imposing a retroactive tax on capital gains earnings. After a bloody fight, Romney succeeded in passing a bill preventing the capital gains tax from being applied retroactively, resulting in a rebate of $275 million for capital gains taxes collected in 2002.”
Vetoed the 87% Democrat Legislature 844 times
-vetoed a union card-check bill that would allow union organizing without secret ballot
-vetoed a moratorium on the opening of new charter schools
vetoed a bill that would have let illegal aliens pay in-state tuition costs at state colleges
vetoed bills that dealt with access to birth control, vetoed increased funding for state zoos,
vetoed the creation of a Massachusetts Asian-American commission,
vetoed many budget items in 2003, his first year in office. (That budget helped the state eliminate a $3 billion deficit without increasing personal income or sales taxes),
vetoed a bill that raised the Massachusetts minimum wage, vetoed a bill expanding stem cell research,
vetoed a bill making the morning-after pill available over the counter
vetoed 8 parts of the healthcare bill including coverage for immigrants, vetoed dental, vetoed employer penalty
and tort reform:
During his gubernatorial campaign, Mitt Romney supported capping punitive damages to replace the unlimited status quo. In 2003, Romney also supported a bill to cap noneconomic awards at $500,000, arguing at a rally organized by the Massachusetts Medical Society, If we have in place policies which drive physicians away, which drive costs spiraling out of control, we cant attract jobs, we cant have a better future for our kids and the families that want to live here. We need reform now. In May of 2006, the Romney administration issued a specific tort reform proposal, calling for :
Closing loopholes in the $500,000 cap on non-economic damages which allowed lawyers to win excessive damages
Reducing lawsuits by allowing doctors to disclose medical errors without fear of admissibility in court
Increasing the number of claims resolved prior to trial
Tightening the states tribunal system to ensure that only meritorious malpractice lawsuits go to trial
Reduces lawyers fees from 25% for verdicts over $500,000 to 15% for verdicts over $600,000
Reducing pre-judgment interest to the one-year Treasury rate -
You don't read very well, that is twice that you have thought that the letter meant that he SUPPORTED DADT.
Read it again, not only is Romney for homosexual Scout leaders, but in that letter he wants an END to DADT, because he wants the military fully homosexualized.
""One issue I want to clarify concerns President Clintons dont ask, dont tell, dont pursue military policy. I believe that the Clinton compromise was a step in the right direction. I am also convinced that it is the first of a number of steps that will ultimately lead to gays and lesbians being able to serve openly and honestly in our nations military. That goal will only be reached when preventing discrimination against gays and lesbians is a mainstream concern, which is a goal we share.""
Having missed all the many years of exposing Mitt Romney here at FR, I guess you also missed this 2005 list of the top rinos in the nation.
TOP 10 RINOS (REPUBLICANS IN NAME ONLY)
By: Human Events
Ranked by the editors of Human Events.
8. Gov. Mitt Romney (Mass.) http://www.humanevents.com/2005/12/27/top-10-rinos-republicans-in-name-only/
Yes, he is saying he backs DADT while he shares the goal of a sunshiney day when there will be no discrimination.
And Reagan helped defeat the Brigg’s Initiative in California that would have banned homosexual school teachers. That didn’t make Reagan “pro-gay” anymore than this makes Romney “pro-gay”, especially in the face of Romney’s historical real-life actions to block gay marriage and protect religious instutitions from gay adoption.
Man we have years and countless articles, including probably many, many hundreds posted at freerepublic telling the truth about that radical left Governor from Massachusetts.
I guess we could both start posting FR thread links to articles from 2004 to 2010 posted here about Governor Romney’s politics, and see which one of us comes up with the most articles that support our claim.
No, I’ve been here a few years longer than you have and missed nothing. I learned early on not to take the word of ideologues such as yourself as gospel, however, and double-check everything with my own research.
While Romney was certainly not my top pick in the primaries, the actual facts of his record disagree sharply with how he is smeared as pro-gay and a socialist by you and your comrades.
I guess after months of seeing you do nothing but make personal attacks, I just have to accept that is all that you consist of, but it sure doesn’t belong here on FR.
But most of us call it the truth and find it incredible how mindless you have become.........
**the actual facts of his record disagree sharply with how he is smeared as pro-gay and a socialist by you and your comrades.**
You missed threads like this, and call the posters “comrades”?
We could post dueling articles from dubious sources or we could look at the facts, the record and the testimony of credible conservative family values leaders who were there at the time fighting the same fight together.
I don’t think this is a difficult decision for those interested in the truth.
Not dubious sources but decades of mainstream sources, from the Boston Globe to Human Events which listed him among the top 10 rinos in 2005 to National Review and every other conservative and news source you can name that has covered him since his birth and during his lifetime in a political family and during his 20 year liberal political career.
Even to his weeks old interview with CBS when he rejected the pro-life party platform on abortion and returned to his lifelong position on abortion.
National Pro-life Group Vows to Mobilize Key Pro-life Voting Bloc to Defeat President Obama in November
Washington, DC ─ Today the Susan B. Anthony List (SBA List), a national pro-life organization, announced its endorsement of Mitt Romney for President.
Now is the time to unite behind Governor Romney in order to defeat the most ideologically pro-abortion president in our nations history, said Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of SBA List. The SBA List is proud to endorse Governor Romney and plans to spend $10 to $12 million in senate and presidential battleground states mobilizing pro-life voters to ensure victory.
Women deserve a president who truly respects our views on an issue so central to womanhood, continued Dannenfelser. A President Romney will be that man. If there was murkiness during the last election over Barack Obama's extreme abortion position, absolute clarity exists now and his abortion position is rejected by women young and old.
"The difference between Governor Romney and President Obama couldnt be clearer, which is why our Board of Directors voted unanimously to get behind him," said Jane Abraham, Chairman of the SBA List Board of Directors. It is the responsibility of all pro-life voters to now unite behind Governor Romney. Together we can put a pro-life leader in the White House.
Previously, Governor Mitt Romney has pledged to defund Planned Parenthood, restore the Mexico City Policy, support legislation to ban abortions based on fetal pain, and appoint only constitutionalist judges to the federal bench. Governor Romney has also committed to selecting a pro-life vice president.
The Susan B. Anthony List is a nationwide network of more than 365,000 Americans dedicated to mobilizing, advancing, and representing pro-life women in politics. Its connected Candidate Fund increases the percentage of pro-life women in the political process.
I think that Romney’s essential position is simple and clear: He will reinstate the executive orders banning the Federal Gov’t funding abortions. He has also been very clear in his statements that he will nominate “strict constructionist” judges.
Other than that, he is going to focus on the “Economy, stupid”, and if Congress puts a bill on his desk, he will consider it at that time.
I personally think that he would sign such bills as pertains to partial birth abortion, etc., and that his pro-life conversion was real and a significant event in his life, but that really hasn’t been tested, and can’t be until under fire. It will be a surprise to me if the Senate can put such a bill on his desk. I believe also, he is a man of his word, and he has spend so many words courting conservatives on this issue, he will honor those words.
look, mittens says hes pro-life, and has a magic marker in his hand to EO the funding to PP...
fast & furious was simply a retroactive mexican abortion program, so that has to go too...
el douchebaggie just cant seem to say out loud that a country thats $16,000,000,000,000.00+ in the hole really doesnt have money to donate to charity, regardless of whether they, or we, are murdering their own children...
what we really need is another law to prevent the unConstitional spending of our dollars...
Or you can be smart and ask what I mean.

If he follows through, then I’ll consider voting for him next time. On second thought, he’ll also have to repeal his support for gay adoption.
